Cher effect was what they originally called auto tune when it first appeared on the scene. They did auto tune it to pay tribute to the 90's, and that specific sound. But congratulations your ears are now attuned to their rare talent and can automatically detect when they use auto tune.

Isn’t it funny how we see ONLY 12M views on a PTX video and say, this can’t be right! 😆 Enjoyed your reaction. I’m thinking you might enjoy some PTX live. I agree with others in the comments. Popspring performance 2016 is a must!! It includes 3 original songs and the Michael Jackson Medley that if you don’t hear it live, you just can’t believe they can actually do it in one take. Welcome to the PTX rabbithole. For something different, I would recommend the following: Carol of the Bells, live from their BTU Special. I really showcases their talents with how difficult and intricate the song is. Also, Mitch doesn't breathe. Aha live at the Star Vista in Singapore. Widely recognized as a top favorite performance among Pentaholics. Mitch was high on Red Bulls and put on a killer show. FYI, it looks theirs only 4 people on stage but Kevin is there. He's just off to the side. Down the Kevin Olusola KOver. This is Kevin (the Beatboxer) by himself but you really get to see his tremendous talent as a singer and musician.

As many have no doubt mentioned, the Cher song they are singing at 6:00, while not the FIRST song to use autotune is the song that made it favorite, to the point where, for years, it was called "the Cher effect." Pretty remarkable that Cher was affecting music to that level...in 1999. Also, a great homage by PTX here! I would kill for EITHER a PTX Cher medley or a full cover of Believe (or both!).

That part is absolutely auto-tuned. This Cher classic is known for that auto-tuned sound and they added it in. Although Pentatonix is usually an a capella group, they do use amplification and sometimes electronic distortion for vocal effects.

Maybe one of the evolutions? If you go with the evolution of Michael Jackson at any point, I suggest you use their version from the Popspring concert. I think it's even better than the official video. They do two original songs ahead of it, and one after that are absolutely great, the second featuring some really special Mitch moments, and the last features Kirstie as lead, but if you want to break them up, the editors conveniently added a Popspring wallpaper between each song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aXuBqtOSqNPUqs4.html

Yes in the song "Believe" by Cher, they used autotune to create that electronic metallic effect to her voice as an enhancement for the techno style. The only time autotune has ever been effectively used to make a song better, since it wasn't used to make someone's inferior voice better...but to add a cool effect for the style of song. Cher certainly didn't need it since she can sing like a goddess, but it really made for a memorable techno effect. It was one of the earlier uses of autotune before people started using it to fake their flawed voices instead of using it to add special effects to songs.

For Believe they did use auto-tune in honor of Cher but there is a technique u can use to naturally alter ur voice to sound auto-tuned. I'm not sure what it's called but u basically push the sound through ur nasal cavity & close off ur vocal cords to make it sound forced, muted, & nasal all at the same time.
