Though Olaf is funny as hell, I would not recommend to watch it as a foreigner, as most of his comedy is the way he speaks, behaves, old or never used words that are that hillarious, his dialect and so on. There are many other comedians that are not THAT hard to translate.

Olaf is actually very bright and plays with his German on a very high level. That, and his (at times & on purpose) very strong east-german accent, together with a weird/absurd sense of humor & delivery make him stand out. But really difficult to translate without loosing like 70% of the actual humoristic content.

  • @petebeatminister
    @petebeatminister4 ай бұрын

Yeah, the translation was not so great, but its also difficult with his way of talking. He likes to drop hints in the language that only Germans understand. Also he is not so worried about PC, as you see. I think he has not so much in common with Pispers, since Pisper was solely focused on political issues. Schubert does that too at times, but also deals with human nature in general. Someone else you should check out is the big bloke with the black thingy on his head who is sitting on the sofa: Torsten Sträter. He is a master of the German language and one of the wittiest people I know. He started his career as a poetry slammer and is now probably the biggest name in German comedy.

Olaf is one of a few "faux awkward" comedians, that use their looks and mannerisms to focus your attention on topics that you would normally not discuss in a humoristic/sarcastic way. And he is very good at it. Because of this, I am pretty sure that most Germans (me included) often don't get all of the jokes on the first or even second time hearing them. And I can't even begin to think, how many of his nuances get lost in translation.

Reminds me of an old joke: Jimmy asks his father how society works. Dad goes "Well, look at our family: I am the economy, I bring in the money. Your mother is the government, she manages the money. Our au pair works for us, she's the working class. Everything revolves around you, you're the people. And your little baby brother is the future!" Later that night Jimmy is woken up by his brother crying, he needs his diapers changed. He spots his father in bed with the au pair, his mother is asleep, so he goes back to bed. Next morning he says to his dad: "I think I understand now how society works. The government sleeps, the economy is screwing the working class, the people are ignored, and the future's covered in shit!"

Olaf is now difficult for foreigners. On the one hand, he speaks a saxon dialect, on the other hand, he is very educated, speaks quickly and uses unusual phrases and sentence structure. Grammatically correct but unusual. I'm afraid a lot of the humor is lost if you're not a native German speaker. These "Pullunder", large checkered, diamond pattern, were actually worn over a collared shirt in the past. In the worst case scenario with abow tie. As a kid! In the late 70s you could get class wedges at school for this. By the way, the one with the black bobble hat among the guests is Thorsten Sträter. Also a very good comedian. Mostly tells stories from his life, somewhat (heavily) embellished and with very good word joke and a really great speak voice..

Hello Mr. Mert, I try to explain at least a little. Thuringia is a federal state of the former GDR. Every native speaker immediately hears where he comes from and that he was born in the East. He also uses some words that were used almost exclusively in the GDR to describe economic relationships. Explaining the resulting subtext and the German reception would fill a book. btw. Your geographical location is 100% accurate. warm regards

Thüringen is a state in east-central Germany. For a long time it had a coalition government of two different socialist parties. (red-red). It is mostly rural and not only famous for being very forested but also for its Thuringian style Bratwurst sausages. The joke at the end linking up Thüringen to North Korea was that "Würstchen" (little sausage) is a colloquial mild insult for a " little squirt". In Scots that would be almost equivalent to a wee nyaff.

With this comedian, you have to bear in mind that he grew up under the socialist influence of the GDR. This is why he is so popular in East Germany. The people there understand his humour best. He uses phrases that everyone had to learn by heart at school. His definition of capitalism at the beginning of his speech was actually what I also had to learn. He also uses a distinctive Saxon dialect in combination with the look of a looser. These are attributes and prejudices that West Germany has always made fun of. There are a lot of dialects in Germany, but the dialects from the East are very unpopular outside their area and the target of degrading jokes. I think it's good that after all these years it has managed to be recognised in the West. In fact, there are really very few East German comedians who are recognised nationwide.

He choses the small federal land of Thuringia because it has a communist gvmt. (it's in former East Germany), so he can parallel it with North Korea. The capital of Thuringia is called Erfurt and Apolda is a small town east of Erfurt. Hence the joke "you can go from North Korea to Erfurt via Apolda". Btw.: I like your channel (and you as a highly likeable person) very much and don't miss an episode. Thank you for your time. 😇🥰

Oh nice. Olaf Schubert is not easy to take. He's very inteligent but many jokes get lost in translation. He's from Saxony (East Germany) and his hard saxon accent is a joke by itself. You can compare it with your scottish accent. (High German-Saxon, Oxford English-Scottish). He is also part of the 'Heute Show' from time to time. I absolutely love him. Because he represents us East Germans and fool all other Germans who think we're dumb or treat us like 2nd class people.

I'm Scots. I love the Saxon accent. My father was in Saxony as a student in the 1930s and acquired a Saxon accent (from around Chemnitz) on top of his own Aberdonian one. He had to "retrain" to learn a High German accent before he became a German teacher. He taught all us kids German too and used to tell us great stories about his time in Saxony. He really appreciated the Saxon comedians of the time. Saxon and Scots humour is often very similar: ein Bisschen schräg, sarkastisch und sprachlich erfinderisch.

1:33 The context is "Asterix & Obelix" comic books. Everyone knows the small Gallic (France) village, that is not surrendering to Rome. And the joke is, that Thüringen (Thuringia/East Germany) & North Korea are both not in France, even though he said "Gallic".

He's from the former East and his dialect is Saxonian. As someone born in the Ruhrgebiet where our humour is more like Pispers', the humour here is very different. It seems to me that the jokes here are more coded but everybody knows the code. While we come across with barbs and daggers.

Olaf comes from Dresden and makes his jokes in Saxon dialect. The humor is very East German. Like Scottish and English

Apolda is a village near Weimar and the name of the county adjacent to the City of Weimar. Very rural. Like Buttcrack, Arkansas, rural.

Thüringen is an eastern German state with a great polarization between right and left, where both sides kind of try to create a socialist setting. But I don't know much about the state. I'm from lower saxony. What I know is, that the people coming from Thüringen are some of the nicest in Germany. People from the eastern states often tend to create a familiar feeling, rather than the western - especially the southern states.

Erfurt and Apolda are cities in Thuringia. Thuringia has a left-wing government, something you find only in states of the former GDR.

Thanks again for your video. I appreciate your interest in german comedy, music and culture. I hope my comments are useful to you. The "little village"-thing refers to the french cartoon-series "Asterix", where a small village resists the roman empire. And he refers to the governments, North Korea with real communism and Thuringia with a "red-red-government", what means two german parties SPD (social democrats) and LINKE (drifted into a social liberalism and gave up its origin positions to stand for the workers, the poor, the not wealthy people (- hat's what the formerly stood for) - Average room temperatur in Celsius - that means around 20 degrees.... youtube translation 08.32 is wrong - it's not "material start" it's "matriarchy" Olaf Schubert normally works very word-focused - in this video the most punchlines worked. For example the female names he chosed stand for different social origin. Something that is difficult to understand for non-native-speakers. Other performances maybe difficult to understand for non-native-speakers, because the punchlines won't work in english. Olaf Schubert polarizes - a lot of people like him but he has also a lot of haters because he can be very offensive. Artistic freedom is a blessing, although today an artist can quickly find himself in the inquisition of cancel culture with just a single sentence. For me Olaf Schubert is a real treasure of modern german culture along with some other comedeans you featured on your channel such as Volker Pispers, Max Uthoff, Claus von Wagner, etc. Another interesting artist for you could be Sebastian PuffPaff
