    Savage Soshi is why I love them too. They speak their minds which is a little dangerous. Like the one time they said they made sure Hyoyeon didn't go on the show with them because they were afraid of what she might say >

    Their variety content is what made me love them so much when I first found them. They're the It-Girl-Group and yet they've been so unapologetically themselves on shows and such. They didn't hold back with each other, from the leader to the youngest, they all had their moments. I think it was that genuine aspect that really endeared a lot of people to them. They also had me cry-laughing many times, so I don't think you'll regret looking into the other variety content. As for the context, the bit with darker skin was pretty common before, especially with Yuri, Kai, as well as N from VIXX (from the groups I followed). Yuri's nickname was also the Black Pearl, which isn't quite ideal at all nowadays (not that it was then either, it was just pretty much brushed over).

    The last clip it's from 2009, at that time korean standards where REALLY strict on having a really fair skin and at that time Yuri had really brown skin, and sometimes the members will laugh about it cause for them it was an inside joke, obviously watching it with a new light it's kind of strange but back then it was just something meh

    Yeah that one at the end really was uncalled for. Watching a lot of old kpop variety shows, one thing I noticed is that colorism was so prevelant, not that it's not an issue right now, but it was so much more normalized a decade years ago. I hope it's even less in the coming years. Aside from that, I'm glad to see you enjoying SNSD stuff, they're so freaking funny! When it comes to "savage" moments, Sooyoung is the main instigator, but they all have their own sense of humor that make their variety content seem like comedy shows.

  • @insc080507

    That last clip is really bad and i hate that ppl still put it in compilations.. Sooyoung and Yuri are both the darkest members and bc having "fair skin" seem to be such a big deal in sk they used to tease each other abt it (in the same way they did w everything else), there's no will intention & it's smth tht applies to both of them, and yuri's skin tone is often her most praised feature .. but the joke is still unfunny and based on a messed up beauty standard.. they dont really joke abt it anymore but occasionally u see in old clips. The silver lining is that Yuri herself has often said how she loves her skin tone, and has been praised abt it by all members, whih also why we know its an (unfunny) joke

    To be fair, they are POC too so being yellow is still a tan color. Asians are not white. So there was no intention into offending the black community with that joke.

    @@therareeclipse3719 a korean once explained that the whole obsession with fair skin in sk doesn't actually come from anti-blackness (not to say that doesn't exist), but it's a very old notion that ppl with fair skin were rich/royalty bc they didn't have to work in the sun all day... it's still a bad notion tho, but those clips r also very old and apparently that was very normalized back then

    Yuri has the darkest skin colour among them since debut and u know in korea the beauty standards is always fair and pale skin so the earlier on the girls will make fun of her skin colour as a joke, i do agree it was inappropriate. It’s sad how the korean society and culture is like that... One thing i like about yuri is that she’s always proud of her skin color and she likes to get tanned despite the society’s views. later on her tanned skintone matched her sexy and healthy sporty image and i think the members appreciate her more

    Emmeth Wearonn oh i wasn’t trying to excuse her for her remark and she was wrong for saying that and even having that kind of mindset. I really agree that kpop is not a land of perfection. Incase you misunderstood I stated the reason to what lead her to have such views is likely to be how koreans are in such environment where these stuff being said is prevalent cuz of the beauty standards and colorism. Like if you’re from some asian countries you’ll get what i mean lol. I said it was a joke because i don’t think she meant it maliciously they just like roasting, i don’t know why she thought this roast was a valid one tho, she was very ignorant for thinking like that. And yeah for the beauty standards thing i also think it’s more because of the views of the society that morphs it so basically it’s a manifestation and reflection of colourism in korea/ kpop in general which needs to be changed and these idols need to get educated.

    @@clarerox2944 Yeah i would also think that maybe idk she didn´t mean it maliciously,but then,at the same video we can have a little look of how her mind works,at 4:54 the driver asks her if she doesn´t like korean men,she responds while making quotation marks with her hands "i liike black men YOOO i like Will smith".Well if you look at these clips separately,you can say ooh here she means thiis there she meaans thaat,but when you put them together... Yeah i don´t think she is talking about korean beauty standards,and i bet my money that if we were to look for it,we would find a looot more of these type of comments from her,but you know that was long ago,and maybe she is different and more mature nowadays,im sure she is :)

    Regarding the lst clip, Korea is an agriculture-based economy throughout its history, Noblemen and the wealthy were spared from the burden of everyday labor in the blazing sun. Pale, white skin was considered a symbol of wealth. It is an outdated obsession to skin color.

  • @eckee
    @eckee3 жыл бұрын

    Last clip is controversial in the west but it’s just the way it is in Korea. At least how it “was” back then. Dark skin was associated with villagers, people who work on farms, under sunlight, people who belonged to low class. It’s not about different ethnicities. And Korean society has a strong sense of hierarchy on many aspects. It was a kingdom with royal families. Seniority in the job/field, age, rank, position, wage, beauty standarts, education etc. So having dark skin kinda makes you a lower class citizen, like many other things might do. For example, bearded men are also frowned upon because that’s how homeless men or men who have no self respect, have low income etc are. They won’t care about foreigners but they will judge Korean men. Just like they won’t judge foreigners’ skin tone but they will pay attention to Koreans’. However, in the west, dark/light skin comparison is mostly about black and white people or race/ethnicity in general, so it feels much more offensive to us than it actually is in Korea. Africans having dark skin - no problem it’s just how they are Koreans having dark skin - they are low class villagers/farmers/fishers that’s why they are dark.
