When Rakim hit, he changed rap in a way that not too many people acknowledge. In the beginning, MC's would always rap in a higher octave than their normal voice. Rakim came along and everyone found out it was ok to rap closer to their normal range. Ice-T and The Fresh Prince are prime examples! Rakim is simply a legend!

I'm from New York and when Rakim came out, he blew up the scene. The way he flowed, nobody could flow like that back in the day. He laid the groundwork for Nas, Jay Z, and other rappers past and present. He flowed by using metaphors and rhymes that were unheard of back then. His style was just superior to everyone back then. Music becomes dated with each generation, but if you play his music today, it'll still sound good. His music is timeless and when they mention the GOAT, he is the Goat. Listen to My Melody and listen to him spit those bars. That song was banging in everyone's cars that summer in New York. The man was gifted so to put other rappers before him is a joke.

This guy is the reason that Run DMC, Fat Boys & all the old school people that came before him couldn't release any more music. Rakim never cursed, and he was only 19 when he did this. The definition of the modern emcee. He literally changed the game.

I saw an interview with Rakim once, and a person in the audience stated to him that he was one of the hardest mc's but he hardly ever curses on his records and asked why?, Rakim simply stated that he doesn't curse because his parents listens to his music. You should definitely check out the "Microphone Fiend"

The whole theme of this song was no joke, no smiling, no comedian, it’s all serious. He held that concept through the whole song and even the no smiling in the video. “Deep concentration cause I’m no comedian, jokers are wild if you want to be tamed, I treat you like a child and ya gonna be named.”

their joint that killed the underground was "check out my melody". you'll better understand the reference to '21 emcees ate up at the same time'. while rakim and krs-one rightfully get credit for changing the game lyrically, before them was T-La Rock's "It's Yours". the true origin of the beats-and-rhyme era, imo.

Yo, that shit you like with them going out into the community performing... that's the essence of Hip Hop! That's how ALL this shit started. In that first verse he said "... now you figure you're ready for the neighborhood tour". That's exactly how it was. Once you got your crew and your style you started going out performing block parties and shit. That's how you got known before the internet and all that. You and your DJ and your setup. Word of mouth got you famous

Y’all got it bro, back then you walk up on a video shoot, remember…our MCs were vetted through rocking parties or winning talent shows, if you didn’t have the support of your community it was tough to make it, you won support from other communities by winning shows or rocking parties in their hood, our taking out their rappers in lyrical combat.

thought about what you said about Eric B & Rakim getting out in the community. Have to remember this was pre internet. The only way to get your music out you had to go directly to public or get heard on the radio which was extremely hard, especially for rap being so new. There wasn't as much on TV or 24/7 sports so you got out and did things to occupy your time.

The scene where they were outside of a store was on 125th street and I was there that day (no cap). That's Harlem, it's a little different from Brooklyn, they go hard to but in the drug game. 3. Rappers didn't curse back cause radio play was important. And, back then we didn't have too many Black record execs. The gate keepers were not like Jerry Heller that brought out NWA. 4.
