Yeah, that song needs some listenings, even as an huge fan of Band-Maid i was paralyzed after the first listen, but it will grow on you after you realize the structure and how much is going on with so much purpose :) Greetings from Germany

It would be foolhardy to listen to this piece without prior preparation. It is an avant-garde and radical piece, comparable to Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in classical music. The Rite of Spring, which at its premiere divided audiences into two camps and caused chaos in the auditorium, is regarded as a masterpiece that opened the door to new music in the 20th century. Similarly, BAND-MAID's "DIFFERENT" was divided between negative comments such as "noise" and "too much clutter" and praise such as "art" and "avant-garde" when it was released. I think it's a great song, and I think it's artistic. But there's something else hidden in this song, something that speaks to the human heart, something that is not destructive or catastrophic. It's hidden by the intense drums and bass, but it's an elegant and beautiful melody that speaks to the human heart, and lyrics that are a metaphor for the joys and emptiness of life. 　There are two acoustic versions of this song, one in which SAIKI plays it alone on the guitar, and one in which he sings it accompanied by KANAMI. The images of the songs are shockingly different. It's "Different"!

Don't feel bad. I think a lot of people had a similar sense of feeling overwhelmed on first exposure to "Different". I recall my own response was along the lines of "um, what?!?" A couple more listens, and I was hooked.

Hahaha! Same face when I first heard it, now it's one of my favorite BAND MAID "fast" songs, love the intricate guitars and base. Akane is killing it the whole time and Saiki is the best as always.

One of those tracks that only Band Maid can do this well. Like being hit in the face with a wet flannel then deciding you rather enjoyed it and wanting to be hit again.

I struggled with Different too at first...I love it now. Their acoustic version is sublime.

Great reaction and don't worry, the Band-Maid brain freeze only lasts for a little while, then you can re-listen to it again and catch all the great things you missed in the first play. :D BY the fifth play thought it starts to make sense (as your brain gets re-wired).

This song was commissioned for the anime "Log Horizon" and is a stand alone song and the last one from this particular label. Organized chaos, but with a purpose! The lyrics reflect the theme of the anime.

Blame the producers of "Log Horizon" - Kanami presented them with five demos and they chose this, the most chaotic and frenetic one, to be the season 3 opening. Believe it or not, Akane and MISA said they actually toned it down a bit. If you give it a few listens, it will creep up on you. It'll will slow down and seem less confusing.

This song was commissioned for an anime,and,as I understand,does not appear on any albums. This song grows on you. I didn't care for it the first time I heard, Now,after multiple listens,I can really appreciate it. It takes a while for the brain to sort it out.

The first time you listen to this song is weird, it's hard to get on top of. Kanami's triplets at the beginning threw me for a loop. It grew on me, I love it now.

Lol, yeah that was my reaction too when I watched it premiere. Listen to it like 5 or 6 more times & your brain starts to catch up, by the 10th you will be totally on board... & ready for the Unseen World!

You have the same look on your face as I did. It took listening to it about four times before the music came through because it sounded like noise at first. Give a few tries and you'll like it.

Different has a very confusing intro and a unique rhythm that seems to hold back. At first I couldn't understand what was happening. After listening to it a few times, my ears get used to it, and the unique rhythm is always fresh and I never get tired of it. Now it feels like a new type of hard rock. It's confusing, but it's one of the songs that has been played more often than the other songs.

This was my exact reaction the first time i ear this song. Its get better with time, i swear. 🤣 But the album that comes after this single "Unseen World" is a BOMB. Manners, Honkai, I Still Seek Revenge and Warning are masterpieces.

I loved this the first time I heard it and it's one of my favourite Band-Maid songs. There is structure underneath the apparent chaos and it repays repeated listening. Kanami's work grows ever more challenging, and consequently interesting.

Your reaction was similar to mine. The first time a heard "Different" the riff sounded really odd to me, I think I have heard it described as "Psychotic Circus Music". I was really unsure about "Different" being so different but after I listened to it a few times I got used to the riff and really enjoy this song now. Once I adjusted to the opening riff, I was able to pay attention to what else is going on. I love the bass and drums (of course) and I think the vocals are great. I have enjoyed all you reactions! There is absolutely no reason to apologize! I think, you should be congratulated for holding out for over a minute until your first pause and only saying after the video that you didn't expect it or weren't ready for it. Most people have already checked off both of these points after 5-10 seconds. :) And I'm no exception. When I played the song for the first time, I paused after a few seconds, thought 'wow, wait a minute' and went to the kitchen to make myself a coffee. Yeah - this song is indeed quite "different" than their norm. One of a few that are very fast paced and seem chaotic. Don't be discouraged though - still lots of good Band-Maid songs to hear!

I'm a dyed in the wool Band Maid fan. There are a couple of songs of theirs that I wasn't Thrilled about. This is one of them (unless you are into speed, then it's a Different story).

Listen again, and then again and you will see it grows on you. It gets better and better as you realize the genius buried in the layers.

I reacted in the same way as you. Completely confused by what I heard. The music was like chaos. After a while I understood this genre is "anime music." They were asked to do Different as the opening theme for the third season of the anime Log Horizon. So this is a side project they sometimes do. Sense is another theme song they made for anime serie Platinum End. I have to say that Akane's "work out" behind the drums is crazy. All the odd rhythms that have to be perfect otherwise it will sound like a sore thumb. I adore her as that skilled drummer she is!

Kanami and the girls produce the most dense yet completely integrated music for any hard rock band in history. Songs like Sense, Hibana, Corallium, Different (The song was used as the opening theme song for the third season of the anime Log Horizon.)... even Black Hole and No God -- most of Unseen World really -- will undoubtedly grow on us because that's what Band-Maid songs do. Exactly. It's DIFFERENT. They didn't lie. 'Different' is a "Way Homer" - it has so many crazy twists and turns that don't go anywhere that you might expect. Yet it all ties together? You wonder what they were thinking when they wrote this. I'm wondering if this isn't an Anime theme song? It has the earmarks. Not their best. Kind of chaotic but it does grow on you. I love Saiki's voice though. Her range... She goes high then low. It has its good parts.

So much talent for so many boring songs. They need a composer and a new singer. Don't hate me, I love the girls, it's just my two cents and my honest opinion.

No hate...my experience of this band could not be more opposite. Is there any song you do like? I only ask because they've covered the widest spectrum of song styles...and changes of pace within songs...which never bore me.

I can totally understand that you don't like the song, it took me a couple listens to get into this one as well, but what don't you like about the singer? Because her vocal timbre/vocals might have been the reason why I stuck with them the first time I heard them about a year ago. And that comes from somebody who typically doesn't really listens to vocals that much (only as an instrument for at least the first couple of listens) and somebody who loves instrumental music. And who listens to metal for the last 20 or so years and a lot of that to black and death metal (so I can't say their music was really up my alley when I heard them for the first time). So I don't really agree with your take on this one. Keep in mind that this was created for an Anime intro, so I'm sure the company behind the Anime had some say in what type of song they made. That being said, a lot of their newer stuff is more chaotic. I personally like it a lot, but I completely get how this is not for everybody and how some people prefer their earlier music over their newer more chaotic music.
