I heard Mongolian throat singing some thirty five years ago. I thought then that some Mongolian kid would plug this in and go Metal with it. Well, it took a while and they’re not exactly kids. But, here they are and they’re great. I get to see them open for BabyMetal in Seattle at the Paramount Theatre October 16th. It’s going to be a great night. Wonderful reaction ladies. Thank you.

Rick Larsen wow considering u could actually see that, u have a great music sense. The traditional way of singing have always had the vibe of metal and the rhyme on a rhythm based techniques.

Ganaa Back then I would come home from work in the morning and spend an hour listening to a world folk music program that was on a public radio station. The host played throat singing for a whole hour one morning. I was fascinated so I called the station and he answered. We chatted for a good twenty minutes. At one point I asked him if there were any Rock bands using the traditional singing style. He didn’t know of any. I said it’s inevitable. Mongolian kids listen to the radio. One of them will plug this in and take over the world. Again. He passed some twenty years ago. He would have loved The Hu.

During the age of the Mongolian hordes they were organised first as tens of warriors then hundreds, thousands and tens of thousands. Describing them as a horde tends to make people think they were a rabble but they were incredibly well disciplined and coordinated. Hence the lines in the song about the tens, hundreds and thousands, etc.

The lion is in a bloody battle to the death The tiger overcomes the leopard in a match The elephant thrashes the leopard in a contest Man intensely struggles with a leopard to contend We, the lions slaughter the leopards in a match The tiger beats the leopard in a contest The elephant trounces the leopard in a fight Man strenuously strains with a leopard in contention An instigator, the jealousy of a snake it could be And Khan Garuda leaps up above into the air A growl, the jealousy of a tiger it could be The blue wolf comes too from far away Hu - hu - hu - hu... Hu - hu - hu - hu... Provoked, the snow leopard competes with it's rivals Ten thunderbolts strike at the same time A hundred hearts energized in the thundering roar Simultaneously a thousand colliding thunderbolts And too, ten thousand lightning strikes in the heavens Hu - hu - hu - hu... Hu - hu - hu - hu... This deluge is the leopard battling in a deadly fight The surges of the leopard scuffling in competion The awesome leopard swats, blows to overthrow The glistening leopard slashes in the scramble Hu - hu - hu - hu... Hu - hu - hu - hu... The wolf totem was a totem used by the armies of Gengis Khan during the years of the Mongolian Empire. It struck fear in their enemies as far as the Russian-Finnish border in Europe, Turkey in Anatolia and Hainan in South-East Asia. The empire collapsed into 3 seperate kingdoms which still have strong roots in especially Turkey. There are many different styles of throat singing, tuvan and mongolian styles I think being the most common ways of doing it.

Excellent reaction! This trip has been very enlightening for me. It started with Nayango Star and a comment mentioning that he should play with BabyMetal. That of course took me into the crazy (to an American) work of the J pop machine. Which led to Aldious and Maximum the Hormone and then YT sent me Ningen Isu and these guys. It made me delve deeper into Mongolian history, which made this song even more powerful. You should also take a look at their other vid, Yuve Yuve Yu, which has the added attraction of the great natural beauty of their home.

You should check out the song "Heaven" by a Mongolian singer on Singer 2018, this is a song of his that Hua Chenyu has covered in the past, and they showed Hua watching from backstage. If you want to see a European woman who does a great demonstration on KZread of the type of Mongolian singing at the very beginning, before you saw the group, see "Anna-Maria Hefele - Polyphonic Harmonic Singing". This type of singing is also done in Tengri's "Heaven", and also Tengri's duet with Dimash called "Swan Goose"

+The correlation between horses and motorcycles, for those that are shockingly confused, it's the old meets new, East meets West, ancient horsepower (which Mongols are FAMOUS for) juxtaposed with modern horsepower (bad ass bikes; still very clan like). You do NOT want to see the Golden Horde coming over the hill on either LOL! 2:25 I’m part Cherokee (Native American tribe), the Wolf is my Spirit animal, and I love them too……. However, in the sense of “the Wolf Totem” in 12th or 13th century Mongolia with Chinggis Khaan the Wolf symbolizes the Golden Horde, the tiger = China, the elephant = India, the Lion = Europe. Even the band’s instruments scream Mongolian culture symbolism with the Horse on the Morin Kuur and the Guitar showing a bow and arrow, the Falcon cries they make on the horse head fiddle symbolize the Falcons the Horde use to hunt and fight with. This is a Golden Horde War Chant from the time of Chinggis Khaan that the HU put to music.

The videos introduce the world to their own unique genre that they call “Hunnu Rock”-a mix of heavy-metal-style pounding bass with traditional Mongolian folk instruments. The band can be seen (and heard) playing the morin khuur-a two-stringed horsehead fiddle played with a bow-and a tovshuur-another two-stringed instrument, but played with the fingers. They also blast out their lyrics in the style of traditional Mongolian throat singers, a technique that involves producing multiple guttural pitches simultaneously.

BAT--- great grandson of Genghis Khan conquered all of Russia and half of Europe. he was the only one of the grandchildren of Genghis Khan who conquered the lands of Europe. and he would have conquered all of Europe if he had not returned home to the golden horde. but he never got home ... died of injuries on the way on the banks of the Russian Volga river. he was only 47 years old. and they say that, unlike all the khans, he was the only one who led his troops himself and fought with them like an ordinary warrior. from birth his father trained him as a warrior and he grew up to be a professional assassin. Genghis Khan adored him very much. Bat--- was a favorite of Genghis Khan.

Personally I think their Yuve Yuve Yu is much better, but that might b/c my personal tastes are more towards the folk side of their blending rather than the heavy metal side. You might like it as well, especially given your comments about the cinematography. If you want more throat singing I’d suggest “Swan Goose” - a three way collaboration between Tengri, Dimash, and a Mongolian folk band. It’s even a trilingual performance believe it or not!
