I actually like this episode where Jerry and Beth's flaws are on full display with Jerry's laziness and cowardice and Beth's pride and sociopathy and the storylines are incredibly honest and well-written.

@PaulaDeming Funny you should mention Keara looking like one of the Asari from "Mass Effect"; her character is voiced by Jennifer Hale, who voiced female Shephard in the video games.

11:52 - *“Here's the thing: I think Rick likes to go around acting like, ‘Oh, nothing matters; nothing matters; I'm such a nihilist; blah blah blah,’ but things **_do_** matter to him.”* Exactly! He _wishes_ that nothing mattered to him, that he was a stereotypical Vulcan, driven only by emotionless logic - that's part of his self-image as the "Smartest Man in the Universe". It was shown earlier in this season in 03x06, _Rest and Ricklaxation,_ where we find out that he perceives his emotional attachment to Morty as a "toxic" weakness in himself. 17:20 - *“Obviously, every piece of media is ‘manipulating’ you in a sense, 'cause it's doing certain things to get you to **_feel_** things, to get you to go on this narrative journey.”* What would be the _point_ of art (including entertainment media) if it isn't to evoke a state of mind in the audience? Whether that's an emotion, a mood, or a new thought or insight. Steven Moffat is _occasionally_ a bit too much in love with the mechanics of evoking emotions/reactions, to the point where he makes the story serve _them,_ rather than the other way around.

Completely agree with Paula. I think the difference between a "surprise" and a "trick" is that a surprise is something you didn't expect but is something you theoretically could've figured out with the given clues, whereas a "trick" is something that ignores the established clues and goes against them, or otherwise lacks any proper foundation.

Very interesting statement there near the end. It's exactly why people so strongly reacted to the ending season of Game of Thrones in a negative way. They LIKED that the first couple of seasons completely suprised them in very unique ways (and this was mostly due to George RR Martins stellar writing), but when the time came to finish the show and the showrunners had no more of Martin's story to base their scripts on what they focussed on was the "Booyah, but you didnt see that coming" moment. They tried to TRICK their audience to hide their bad writing.

Here’s the scariest piece of you, you’ll ever find true. “You will be exactly like your parents except for 1 to 2 of whatever their most major traits are”(I put that in quotes so you’d more take it serious). If they are always late, you’ll be early; or if they are dirty, you are very clean.... but other than that.... same same but different.

I'd like to make an argument that Beth is NOT a clone. From the start it's been abundantly clear that Beth is Rick's daughter, but you can literally see her choose not to make the same decisions. Not to murder the guy telling her "We're losing him." Not smothering Jerry in his sleep. Not kicking Rick in the fork when provoked. Keeping the job that Jerry scoffs at. But she chooses, she chooses every day, every single day to do the right thing! To be GOOD! Of course, I could be just blowing smoke.

Honestly, this was the very first episode of Rick & Morty that I didn't like very much. Something about the show changed right around this time. I'm not even sure exactly what it was. Something to do with the writing. The mojo was just ... gone.
