NEIL PEART FACTS
-Neil Ellwood Peart, born September 12, 1952 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
-Drummer/lyricist for the band Rush (joined in mid 1974). Accomplished author of 13 books/publications.
-Won several awards throughout his career.
-Drumming influences: Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Freddie Gruber.
-Rooted in hard rock, Peart changed his playing style incorporating jazz and swing components after becoming a pupil of Freddie Gruber in 1994.
-Peart lost his only daughter (at the time) in August 1997 followed by his first wife in June 1998.
-Retired in December 2015, and band member Alex LIfeson confirmed in January 2018 Rush was disbanded due to Peart’s Health issues.
-On January 7, 2020, age 67, Neil Peart died after a 3 ½ year battle of glioblastoma (brain cancer).
FACTS ABOUT THIS DRUM SOLO
-Performed during the R40 Rush 30th Anniversary Tour in 2004 in Frankfurt, Germany.
-Neil Peart stated in an article in 2015 (Neil Peart: Marching to the Beat of a Different Drum: www.loudersound.com/features/... ):
“My vague design for that solo was deceptively simple. I would approach it as if I was just sitting down at the drums to start playing - to exercise the improvisational skills I have been working on for, oh, about ten years now. Technically, I was determined to exemplify everything I thought I knew about drumming, and everything I love about the drums - almost 50 years of experience and passion had to go in there somehow…”

The intro and outro music are a bit messed up/laggy and poppy. That was likely due to my computer issue. Apologies for that annoyance. I am upgrading the RAM tomorrow so this shouldn't be an issue going forward! What I learned with this piece: It's hard to single out any one thing I took note of in the process of making this video as it's not a "song". I already knew Neil Peart was one of the best drummers in the world, but I did not know just how much of a master he was with drums. Particularly at making all four of his extremities move at different times, in different patterns. A LEGENDARY musician and lyricist, lost too soon. I highly recommend: Thievery Corporation - "Le Monde": kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z2SnrK2EabXcfaQ.html

Stop with the sub categories of rock. Its rock plain and simple
Crazy fact about this solo: Neil actually stated he was frustrated with this particular solo and wanted to either use the next night’s solo, or splice them together for the DVD. That just goes to show the level to which he held himself. THIS was an “off night” to him. Meanwhile, every other drummer on the planet would kill to have a night like that! This is why I continue to love Rush even long after they retired and disbanded.
Neil Peart was also the 95% poet for all the lyrics. And the songs were based on those lyrics and his beats. NP WAS Rush. He’s a legend. 1,000 years from now he will still be revered. Like Mozart… RIP MAESTRO‼️‼️‼️
Neil was the greatest. He once described his playing as "solving complex equations and running a marathon at the same time."
Traditionally, the drum solo is the break in the concert where you run to take a leak-you NEVER did that at a Rush concert! RIP Neil!

Neil essentially takes you around the world in this solo, RIP professor
Neil wrote about this particular performance in his book Roadshow, how he knew the Frankfurt concert was going to be taped and how he wished his playing had been better. He put so much pressure on himself in live performance, no wonder it wore him out. Yet an imperfect performance from him is an unattainable performance for the rest of us. His keeping three-four time with his feet while the hands do several completely unrelated patterns is itself a showstopper.

Neil Peart is one of those people that make it hard to find words to describe just how talented they are. He would turn a drum kit into an entire symphony.

Greatest percussionist of all time. Niel Peart is the GOAT.
greatest drummer ever born rest in peace brother. yes peart wrote all the lyrics for RUSH
2 things- 1) GOD GIVEN TALENT! & B) A work ethic, thousands of hours of REAL ACTUAL WORK & practice- He was taking lessons in jazz & swing in his 40s & 50s that he was open about but very few ppl actually knew! That work ethic is very seldom seen anymore in any field
RIP Neil, knowing you accomplished your mission. The Best drummer ever.
Neil Peart was not only One of the GOATs, but he was humble enough during the early 90s to reinvent his drum style and re-learn his craft with some Jazz greats to get to where he wanted to be in his craft. How awesome is that - especially as an example to all who followed him, young kids coming up playing drums, and Rush fans in general - to be a GOAT and still turn around and go "I'm good but I know I can get/do better" getting better - to want to continue to learn his craft when he could have just sat at his pinnacle at the time and ridden that right out to the end.
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
NEIL PEART’S 10 RULES FOR SUCCESS: 1: EARN YOUR AUDIENCE 2: BE RESTLESS 3: GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE 4: LEARN FROM OTHERS 5: CREATE WHAT YOU LIKE 6: INFECT PEOPLE WITH YOUR FIRE 7: DON’T READ REVIEWS 8: CREATE FOR YOUR IDEAL AUDIENCE 9: FIND YOUR INSPIRATION 10: NEVER STOP EXPERIMENTING
For those of you who were never able to experience this live... Imagine THAT, amplified by 50,000 watts of power.

Ive seen rush 8 times. No regrets whatsoever. Im 56 now
I thank God every day for letting me see Rush live at the Perfect show in 2010 at Kansas City Kansas.
This was probably one of the best reaction videos I have ever seen just watching how many reacted to his solo and how amazed everybody is. I was fortunate to see them 16 times R.I.P.
Neil Peart drum solos are much like Eddie Van Halen guitar solos. Lots of different sounds and sections. Simply amazing!!!
For a "old" Rush fans like me, who know already from the early 80's that Rush, all their members and especially Neil Peart, were a band and musicians so special, with so much talent, and at the top position (already) of their instrument. And at the same time, if I declare this to the people around me, I was for them, "somebody coming from the planet mars". It's sweet for me to watch reactions of these people who discover for the first time a great musician like Neil Peart. It's true, it's amazing to see a solo (with so much parts!) so accomplish (after probably 40 years of solos). Just the first section is amazing! But it's not the end , there another part, an another part, an another and another... I think this Neil Peart solo's in Frankfurt, it's to much (and dangerous) for a novice. 😉 Start with the solo's in 1975 "All the World's a stage"
RIP, Neil. The GOAT
Amazing how a man who HATED the Limelight could mesmerize everyone who heard him play and at the same time put a Smile on everyone’s face. We won’t even get into the lyrics he wrote RIP Professor
No matter how many times I see the Professor Neil Peart play that solo, it ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes. Just eye watering stuff. He's desperately missed. He was a percussionist first and foremost.
Yes...he is the GOAT and always will be.
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Professor on the drum kit

I find it ironic and heartfelt that you all finally get the genius that is Neil Peart. RIP. Don't forget he wrote all of their lyrics as well.
A Neal Peart drum solo was worth the price of admission to a Rush concert.

An additional lucky few have seen the light that Neil shined upon his fans and craft for decades. Not just a fast few years, but DECADES!! RIP dear Professor.
RIP Neil, saw Rush 3 times and Neil always did a drum solo. Many have tried to be at his level and not gotten there yet. Many many great drummers but Neil was in a league of his own.
Even in later years, still took lessons to improve. His ability is unmatched, forever.
AND NEIL I BELIEVE DID THIS DRUM SOLO 70 times on this TOUR WOW !!!
I'm a drummer. (62yo) Played in bands, did some studio stuff. Been around some great musicians with good gear. (not garage band stuff) I get a kick out of people online who are supposed "pros", with drums in the background. I've heard a lot of drummers in almost 50 years of playing, but Peart is the greatest drummer BY FAR I've ever heard. I played hard rock in the day but grew up with my dads big band albums. Buddy Rich etc. Buddy, even with the ego he had, and how great he was, would have to tip his cap. Peart was given a gift. I truly believe that. Some people are just lucky that way. All of the practice in the world won't get you to his leveL. i my opinion, and experience, he really was the greatest drummer ever. And I've heard many. If someone can find one better I'd love to hear it.

But, at the same time, THAT'S the BEAUTY of it!.. R.I.P. my Brother..THIS is DEFINITIVE PROOF that YOU & your legacy will, not only reach/influence the new, but LIVE on FOREVER!!! 🤘 🤩🤘
This guy never played second for any other drummer! I've seen this band play six times and still to this day I do not feel like I understand everything about it. All three members were completely unique, and added very specific elements to make uo what Rush is known for? Pure artistry!
RIP... Niel is the GOAT.
Most drummers use triggers to cheat on their ability, Neil uses them to prove that there will never be another drummer like him. What a talent.
.. us Rush fans will tell you that Neil's solo was worth the price of admission alone .. RIP Professor .. the GOAT indeed ..
The comment @11:50 is spot-on. This isn't JUST a drum solo, it's a song in its own right. The Max Roach inspired waltz section and the big band outro are two examples of Neil taking drums to a new level nobody heard before. He played his own horn section! Others could have, but Neil actually did it!
I was extremely lucky to have seen this legend in concert twice.. Rush put on a great show!
He was so good that I brought binoculars to the concerts so I could see the drum solo better 😆

Me too! :)
the Professor at work, RIP Neil, what a drum master he was 4 sure!!
Wow! Such a beautiful tribute to Neil. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. To see so many genuinely eye opening reactions to Neil's lifes work put on display in a performance that blows people's minds like this was awesome!

Thank you very much!
A true master of percussion. Always learning and refining the art. That's why he's the Professor. Still missed.
Neil was a member of the Buddy Rich Band, toured with them in place of Buddy, he wasn't just a student of Buddy, he was his friend. I play drums, thrash, speed, power metal were easy for me learn, but Neil was hard to learn. Hardest part of any style for me is bass, first few playthroughs I listen to just the bass drums, that bit where Neil's tapping the hihat "chi-chi...chi-chi" with his left foot while going crazy on the rack, that is a lot harder than people think, metal drummers don't do that, it's a jazz thing.
There will NEVER be another PROFESSOR , R.I.P.
Brings a tear to my eye. I saw that solo. He evolved that solo over many years, the core of it is called “The Rhythm Method”
The Professor...seen Rush 7 times .. AMAZING! He was my absolute Icon of a hero. Will miss seeing the shows. Hope and pray that all may have peace. And I hope that the spirit of RADIO will go on...even in the Subdivisions.😉
Bonham, Peart, Moone, none better. Change my mind. Good day and rock on to all.
Ive been listening and watching Rush since i was 11 ,i'm 55 now and there will be no one like Neil ever again.Rush are one of those bands that people will be listening to in 2, 3, 400 years from now and still be going wow how did they do that.Glad i was around to see them on many ,many occasions.
