Sylvian during Japan era was never associated with New Romantics if thars yput point?? They were far from New Romantics, it was just a phenomenal band who worked together 10 years too soon, as for Sylvian"s solo career, Check out Brilliant Trees album, his first, it's filled with,,, I'll let you listen rather than explain,,, you'll get it

David peaked in the 80s as an artist. He wrote lush Neo Romanticist music with obscure yet deep lyrics and beautifully played instruments played by the likes Mark Isham, David Torn and long time friend/ collaborator Ryuchi Sakamoto. Check out his master work, the dbl album, Gone To Earth, when you get a chance. P.S. his other albums are interesting, but never reached the wholeness of his 80s thought and vision. Well, that's from my perspective. He is a true artist who goes at his pace and leisure.

David Sylvian first came to my attention in about 1979 with Japan and I've followed his many incarnations. He is always interesting and when it comes together he's brilliant. The album these are from is just brilliant and thanks to Deep Blue for this great suggestion. I'd suggest a dip into the Japan albums and his solo work on Brilliant Trees and maybe Dead Bees On A Cake. he has collaborated with many great musicians and I'd just say go and have a listen as he is a really unique artist.

To be honest , the day Rob Dean wasn't part of Davids vision fot Tin Drum, which is BS, PERIOD, Rob was more than a forgotten, and *brilliant lead guitar player* whom I'd put up against Michael Ronson, (Bowies main man) , who apart from Tin Drum was apart of and had from the outset,,, NME said Rob had chosen his venture into anything but music, but you know that *did he fall?, or was he pushed *?!? That's when, I'm sure I'm not alone, knew things weren't quite right at Base camp,,, Quick one,,,, and I'll say quite clearly NO Anyone think we will ever see David on stage again?????

I think David's nature contributed to his underrated status. He was rigidly uncompromising, a career built on his own terms and timing. So he had little interest in playing rock/popstar game. He declined many offers including fronting King Crimson post Adrian Belew and refused the added exposure of reviving the Japan name when the group reformed as Rain, Tree, Crow.

The term “criminally underrated” appears in absolutely every video on KZread. For some reason, everyone likes to think that it passes for an insightful observation. I feel people misunderstand what it means, which is endlessly frustrating. I’d like to suggest that they mean “under-appreciated” instead. David has been an artist of the highest order, reinventing himself continually for nearly 50 years. His integrity, ethos, and restless creative explorations are, in my mind, without peer. Those who know and enjoy his music rate him along with the very best. The real pity is that he is under-appreciated by great deal of the music listening and buying public, but that makes me cherish his gifts all the more!

To me ' Poet's ' meaning points a few different directions . . Catastrophe / DENIAL / ' row upon row of futile houses blow away ' reminds me of an F5 tornado . If I could choose any singing voice for myself Davids would be top of the list, have loved Sylvian since I first heard 'Life In Tokyo' in 1979 and was lucky enough to see Japan on the same tour that spawned the live album 'Oil On Canvas' shortly before their breakup... So underrated... 'September' is short and sweet but a long time favourite from David...

@@ReactionsToTheClassics In that case :-). Can I suggest "Brilliant Trees" and "Nostalgia" from Brilliant Trees. The afore mentioned tracks from Gone to Earth. "Darkest Dreaming", "Wanderlust" and "I surrender" from Dead Bees on a Cake. "God's Monkey" and "Jean the Birdman" from The First Day ( collaboration with Robert Fripp) and "Damage" and "The First Day" from live album Damage Live. The excellent Nine Horses album ( with brother Steve Jansen) has "Wonderful World" and "Atom and Cell" that deserves a reaction. Japan came back as "Rain Tree Crow" at some point, listen to "Blackwater" . Last but not least, he wrote a song for an anime soundtrack, which is glorious indeed: "For the Love of Life". Enjoy. Btw, there is a bootleg of the live show he did in Milan 1988 with the full band (David Torn, Mark Isham, Steve Jansen and more, a truly incredible live recording, with every tune executed better than the studio version (in my view). Find "Let the Happiness in" or "Nostalgia" on it.
