J.None is a former member of Voiceplay who joined the navy, but comes back whenever he's home and does collaborations with them. He's pretty damn amazing! This was an absolutely brilliant cover. I never cease to be blown away by how talented these guys are...and never cease to be pleasantly surprised by the songs they choose to cover. So much talent in this bunch! PS: Geoff Castellucci (the amazing bass/baritone) actually DOES have a solo channel where he does his own covers all by himself and it is simply amazing. Definitely check out his solo work...because there actually is a guy that does that..and he's right in front of you! These guys are my musical spirit animals :) Enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole!

Thanks for verifying what I remember-that opening without the guitar player even touching the frets! The bass/baritone: Geoff Castellucci. He’s fabulous. He also has his own solo channel with a ton of great stuff-you’ll love it. Middle guy: Eli (ELee) Jacobson. Former rock singer, no surprise. He has the ability to color his voice to fit whatever he needs to do. Also an incredible actor. It occurs to me that when he looks right at the camera just before the violin solo, there’s a “you aren’t ready” look there. Just a twinkle. Left Center: Yes, J.None. He was a member of Voiceplay, left a couple years ago to sing in the NAVY (!). He comes back “home” now and then and we’re hoping he’ll be home for good when he’s out. Right Center: Cesar de La Rosa. Very brief solo but he carried the high harmonies. He’s listed as a baritone but he also was the guy hitting the high notes in Dream On. He typically brings this joyful ebullience to VP-his stillness and sobriety here is so unusual a lot of us remarked on it. I’m thinking it was meant to set the tone. Beatboxer: Layne Stein-the man is a BEAST. He is basically incredible at whatever he wants to do. His violin makes an appearance in Warriors as well (three years ago-we want more!) Layne and Geoff also take turns arranging songs (this one was Geoff). Eli often does lighting and sometimes adds to arrangements. Voiceplay is my favorite of the “big three” acapella groups (I’m a theater person, so I love it when they pull out the stops and go full cosplay/mini musical). You might check out Hoist the Colours, or In the Hall of the Mountain King, or We Don’t Talk About Bruno (yes, it had been done to death before, but not by VOICEPLAY). For more of their traditional just music stuff, Carry On Wayward Son is a good one. Basses as focal singers-as I mentioned, Geoff has his own channel. Also, there’s a new, up-and-coming group called The Bass Gang that is ALL bass singers. Basses can have ridiculous range, so both in Geoff’s channel and TBG’s music, you’ll still hear tenor, baritone, even up to 5th and even 6th (in Bass Gang’s case) octaves. All members of The Bass Gang also have solo Channels. These are young guys, all in their teens and 20’s, just getting started, but the talent and skill is still off the charts already. Loved this reaction, Adam, especially your detailed thoughts about the individual parts. Obviously I’m there for more Voiceplay reactions! There’s lots to love.

I especially like Marwan’s build ups I think that’s what he calls them. They’re usually shorts where he demonstrates that he can go all the way from low bass to falsetto and also add the beatboxing. He has phenomenal range, and a really special timbre to his voice. Tomi P also has an enormous range, I think because he and Marwan are younger than the others and are just now exploring the depths of their voices while still being able to reach for the heights. Peter and Bobby are also enormously, talented, of course, but I don’t notice that they hit those incredible high notes like the two youngsters do.

@@janetdw Peter gets way up there-some of the really high notes you hear are him. And Bobby is hitting some too in their most recent release with Tim Foust. Bobby did an interview with Mortius and the subject of building the upper range came up-sounded like they’d been talking about it before they started recording and it seemed like he was saying that this was something he’s been working on. Peter says Tomi has the biggest range of all of them at well over 6 octaves, when you include extended techniques. I enjoy Marwan’s buildups also-and have you heard his latest cover? I still can’t get over the fact that he’s that skilled at 18 years old! Tomi has one on his channel where he develops the basis for Unholy-really well done, both the final product and his buildup.

Another reactor blown away. There are no half measures with VoicePlay, when they do a thing, they do it. Left to right: Geoff Catellucci, bass singer and bass guitar, has his own channel of low bass covers. Worth checking out. J.None smooth barrtone, precious member, Eli Jacobson (ellie) rock tenor great on riffs and runs. Cesar de la Rosa with very soft voice and lots of hair, and Layne Stein, the vocal percussionist and violinist. Can I ask you to to check them out in I Can't Make You Love Me. Something very special. And Can't Help Falling In Love.

When you said they weren’t ready for the violin, I had to pause to sit and laugh for like ten minutes. They had a hell of a time filming that - Layne just couldn’t catch both the bow and the violin in any way that looked graceful. So yeah, he wasn’t ready for it either. 😂 The “catch” you see in the video was after he gave up on catching it and threw it instead. They reversed that second or so of film. Two FYI’s - VoicePlay doesn’t do all that copyright protection jazz on their videos. They want reactors spreading their music. So you don’t have to obscure it. 😊 Secondly, they do their own arrangements. It’s usually Geoff (bass) or Layne (beatboxer/violin), but Eli (tenor in the center) has done a few. This particular arrangement was Geoff’s. He does such an amazing job of keeping a song instantly recognizable while completely changing everything and for the life of me I don’t understand how. They also do pretty much their own everything else. Set design, lighting, video editing….that’s all them. The only time others are involved would be for the final audio mix (they do the rough), when they need an extra camera or two, and when they do more extreme make up like their “Hall of the Mountain King” or “Ding Dong” videos. Lastly, Geoff (bass) has some solo stuff out. You wouldn’t need to obscure those videos either. Search for Geoff Castellucci. I recommend “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Ghost Riders in the Sky”, and “House of the Rising Sun”. They’re my personal faves. And nice to meetcha! 👋

I don't know how they can top this but...I've said that before as well. I do have absolute faith in their abilities. If you want to hear Layne and J None both on violins, check out Warriors. It is VoicePlay's precursor to Dream On. Geoff calls it Warriors 2. J None hadn't gone into the US Navy at that point and Earl (high tenor) was an original member back from middle and high school but left a couple years back. In Dream On, Cesar had become a full member and Omar Cardona was the guest vocalist. VoicePlay is still short one person (personally I think they are waiting to get J None out of the Navy). They have taken advantage of guest vocalists to pick up new sound and people.

Awesome reaction. Left to right... Geoff (Jeff) Castelucci - Bass. J None - Baritone (Guest). Eli (elly) Jacobson - Tenor/Rock Tenor. Cesar De La Rosa - Baritone. Layne Stein - Percussion/Baritone. Voiceplay is an awesome group. Every song and video they have put has been a hit. They have been through many members through the years. Presently they only have 4. So they collaborate with other artists. J None was with them from 2018- 2021. He left to sing with the US Navy for 5 years. He is stationed in Washington. And comes to Orlando Florida for his leaves. While in town he sings with Voiceplay. Layne got the nickname VioLayne from their video Warriors. He plays the whole video in that one. But the name went viral fast in this one. Geoff also has his own channel where he sings solo with instruments. Every song and video on there is awesome as well. Geoff has a very wide range. Super low and super high.
