Despite being a bird person, I feel a connection to rodent people (and also reptile people). We all deal with watching our favorite animals suffer due to the fact that the general population isn't educated enough. They don't understand how much cage/enclosure space these animals need, how much mental enrichment they need, what to give for a healthy diet, what environmental dangers there are for these animals (funny you mentioned ingesting fabric, because that's a main cause for the potentially fatal 'impacted crop' in birds), the physical exercise you need to facilitate for these animals, etc. Not to mention, at least for birds and rodents- particularly budgies/cockatiels and gerbils/hamsters respectively- they are often viewed as some sort of "easy pet for kids". In my opinion, no living creature should be a child's responsibility. It's unfair on the animal and unfair on the child, and these animals aren't that simple.

I have two budgies, I have had them since January and they are only starting to finally become slightly more comfortable with me. I would almost certainly not call them ‘kid pets’. They require SO much patience and mine are still addicted to seeds.. I’m trying to get them onto a better diet but it’s still pretty difficult as they refuse to eat different fruits and vegetables I give them. ( For some reason, my attempt at sprouting seeds didn’t work. They just smelt horrible and started to mould.)

As a kid it isn't your responsibility though. When parents buy their kid a pet they should research what that pet really needs and be prepared to take care of it if their child loses intrest in said pet (it doesn't always happen, but I have seen quite a few cases where for instance a rabbit was brought to a shelter once the kid lost intrest)

@@blep993 its so true; a lot of parents will get their kids a pet without doing research because they simply just don't see small pets as important or lovable. Then the only research the parents get is just deceptive marketing strats. • @elainelouve

@@blep993 this is so true. I was the only one in our family who knew anything about aquariums and fish, but I was only 11 years old. My parents also often ignored what I said about the fish care, like when one of them got sick and needed quarantine and medicine (I had a book on fish care where it said so), but of course I didn't have the means to do that, so in the end almost all of them got sick and died. Have to add many adults also think you can take care of dogs and cats just based on that their parents, grandparents, etc. had pets 50 years ago. My aunt litterally thought I'd teach my puppy to pee only outside by pushing it's muzzle to the puddle of pee it made inside the house. While this was in the late 90's, even back then dog training was already based on science rather than folklore. Though the science of the time was flawed at the core ( = based on the assumption that wolf packs have a strong hierarchy). I'm glad that we learn more about animals all the time.

L L I like to hope that cats don't feel existential dread and many of the things that make people pause and wonder if living is really worth the mark we make on this world. Cats are happy to live, eat, hunt, love, and comfort hopefully without the extra baggage we put on everything. I know they can get depressed, that you have to make sure they get all the attention and love they need because they do feel negative emotions just as much as positive ones... but I can't stand the thought of my cat looking out the window and thinking a lot of the dark thoughts that people do. Otherwise, yes. I know they have empathy, are SUPER intelligent, and if they had opposable thumbs it would be like having a ten-year old who is constantly hungry in the house.

Same, I feel like this video of Troom Troom should be taken down until some other poor kid finds this video thinking that these hacks are perfectly safe. I can’t emphasize how much you need to do your research before you get a hamster or any other animal in general, since too many pets wind up getting neglected. I also think the videos of bathing hamsters in water should be taken down too. If you want me to explain why bathing hamsters in water is bad for them, feel free to ask.

Most of the "bring my animal with me" products ( I have usually seen them for cats, not hamsters) have a MESH "window" to allow for air to come in. Also, depending on the type of paint they are using on the feeder, they really need a sealant so pieces of paint do not chip off and poison/injure the hamster.

Considering how young the hamsters are there’s definitely a chance that they got them just for the video and are planning on selling or even abandoning them after filming. I know this is sometimes common and you shouldn’t get a pet just for a video or popularity...

Try make a chair out of it. Cut little bits on the edge half or less of the way round to about the centre. Use honey to stick the strips together but only use a little bit. Then add hamster bedding on top and if you want an opening big enough for the hamster to fit through. My hamster is a dwarf hamster so the hole was decently small but she ended up chewing it to bits😂

I love how the cage in the bg has 2 levels! Also side note my school has this room with like 10 pets including a few mice and we had that exact small cage in the video but only used it to separate the 2 new rats one time (for a few mins till we found a bigger temp cage that was laying around) cuz they were trying to kill each other and we soon got rid of one and kept the other one in a nice big cage. 🙂

I had a Syrian hamster. We didn't have much space, but got him as big a cage as possible to fit in my room. Not that he did much and I gave him cuddles and time to run around every other day as he was quite nervous. My brother's dwarf hamster was lazy. Even when we got her out, all she did was eat, poop and sleep. She moved a foot at most, or carried her bedding up the tube to her wheel as we had a cage that gave her stuff to climb
