    For reference, Bond really IS the character’s name. His father, Andrew Bond, was Scottish. His mother, Monique, was Swiss. They died in a tragic mountain climbing accident, leaving Bond orphaned. He then went to live with his paternal aunt, Charmaine, who raised him until he was sent to Fettes boarding school. However, Bond was expelled after he was caught in a compromising situation with one of the maids. Not long afterward, Bond (who may have lied about his age at the time), enrolled in the Royal Navy, eventually achieving the rank of Commander.

    It was Eton College that Bond was expelled from. Also the poor chamber maid miss Roan Power was a Soviet double agent unknownly working for the Nazis to assassinate King George V.

    Miss Moneypenny is M's personal assistant in the books and all the Bond movies from Connery all the way to Brosnan. It was a cool way to introduce the character. The exploding pen reference is a reference to a Bond gadget from the "Goldeneye" (1995) movie. The name of Bond parents and their death is explained in the books and is further explained in "Specter".

    This is my favorite entry of Craig's tenure as Bond. I actually went to the Scottish Highlands during a trip back in 2018, and drove past areas they used in the film. And yeah, Shanghai is really lit up like that at night. I was there in 2019 (just over a month before the pandemic outbreak!), and their entire skyline turned into a giant light show. I like to think of Skyfall as an inverted Bond movie; he fails at nearly every important point. He loses the list, doesn't recover quickly after being shot, temporarily quits and lets his skills decline, gets his leads killed, inadvertently helps the villain with his plan, loses his home, and fails to save M. The movie starts off in these seemingly exotic locales, but ends up in relatively familiar settings in the streets of London and the Scottish Highlands. Usually it's the opposite. The villain lets himself be captured by a much larger, more powerful organization, and then escapes. Again, it's usually the opposite. The finale takes place in the hero's home, not the villain's home. It's not an overly elaborate base; it's just a house with no outside resources, but it gets destroyed all the same. There is no overly complicated plan for world domination; Silva just brings a lot of guys, guns, and explosives to accomplish a personal goal. Skyfall was the 50th anniversary of the series, so there are _several_ easter eggs/references to the older movies. Here are some I can mention _without spoiling_ the plots of the other movies: -Dr. No: The Walther PPK from Q Branch, and a stolen work of art put on display. Silva's bottle of scotch is from 1962, the year Dr. No came out. M, Q, and Moneypenny got their starts here as well. M's office at the end of Skyfall is a replica of the original, right down to the leather door. -From Russia With Love: A train in Istanbul, and a reference to a Q Branch item as a Christmas present. -Goldfinger: A radio tracker, "You must be joking.", one of the thugs at the casino looks like a certain henchman, and the silver Aston Martin (with ejector seat and guns) originally debuted here. -You Only Live Twice: M writes Bond's obituary. His parents' names are also mentioned in the original novel, but are on tombstones in Skyfall. -Live and Let Die: This isn't the first time that Bond has used a reptile as a stepping stone. -The Man With The Golden Gun: Silva's white suit, Tanner, a gun that skews slightly in one direction, using mirrors in a gun battle, a villain with an unwilling lover, and a casino in Macau. -The Spy Who Loved Me/Moonraker: A certain aspect of Silva's appearance is reminiscent of a certain villain. -For Your Eye Only: Knives. Also, when Bond removes the shrapnel from his shoulder in Skyfall, he says to give to M, "For her eyes only." The number on the bag of shrapnel also appears as a date on a computer file in the previous movie. -Octopussy: Trains. -The Living Daylights: Part of the villain's plot. -License To Kill: A gun that can be programmed to a palm print. -GoldenEye: Certain aspects of the villain's backstory, the exploding pen, "Hello, James.", a brilliant hacker, and getting bad news from CNN. -Tomorrow Never Dies: Yet another obituary for Bond. -The World Is Not Enough: A surprising amount of similarities, to the point that explaining would be spoilers. -Die Another Day: Bond takes an unplanned retirement, and some of M's reactions. There's way more, but I don't want to get into spoilers just in case you watch the older movies. Judi Dench's M is named Olivia Mansfield, as seen at the end. Ralph Fiennes's M is named Gareth Mallory. So the M comes from their last initial. One final minor detail is the painting in M's office. When Bond meets Q, they look at a painting of an old warship being towed away to be scrapped. But in M's office at the end, there's a painting of a warship in its prime. The symbolism isn't subtle, but I like it.

    Highest-grossing Bond film of all time. Released during the 50th Anniversary. Bond remembering his tragic past, rebuilding his body & soul, recharging his character to be the best there is. Judi Dench as the only female 'M'. Playing the role within 17 years and 2 eras. Tied with the late Bernard Lee, who played the role first in these films. Saw this in IMAX and i was blown away. Bardem as the villain, Introducing franchise favorites (Q & Moneypenny) finally, getting a new M and the theme by Adele is so good. A definite bounce-back from the previous film.

    Reposting my comment from the Casino Royale video in the hopes it gets seen: I'm just gonna say it: PLEASE do more James Bond movies. There's a total of 6 actors so far who have played the part, and they've all had great films under their tenure. We'd all love it if you did the entire series, but if I can only suggest one from each, then (listed in order from first Bond actor to last): 1. Sean Connery - Goldfinger 2. George Lazenby - On Her Majesty's Secret Service (his only film) 3. Roger Moore - The Spy Who Loved Me 4. Timothy Dalton - Licence To Kill 5. Pierce Brosnan - Goldeneye

  • @the_judge_8262

    @the_judge_8262

    Good list, I would only suggest that Roger More and Sean Connery deserve two movies given the longer back catalogue of each, e.g. I would add Sean Connery - From Russia with Love (before Goldfinger) and Roger Moore - Live and Let Die. Else is hard to appreciate them as Bond in just one movie. Perhaps Brosnan might be two movies too (?)

  • @twofacetoo75

    @twofacetoo75

    Жыл бұрын

    @@the_judge_8262 I agree, but it's still a lot of movies to tackle, ideally I'd like them to tackle them ALL (other reactors have done it, like RolyPolyOllie) but if they can't handle that, it might be best to just stick to a 'best of' for each Bond. But frankly, as long as my two favourites (Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton) get a look in, then I'm happy as a clam.

  • @iansmith4023

    Of the three films you've seen so far,only Casino Royale was based (pretty closely!) on Ian Flemings book. Skyfall is filled with Fleming references (as well as cute callbacks to the earlier movies) - the references to Bonds parents,and his father's Scottish heritage e.g. - but the plot is original. I think Fleming would have enjoyed it :) Btw,Fleming worked for the Intelligence service during WW2; but he was rarely 'in the field' due to the amount of knowledge he held....if he had been captured he would have been a monumental security risk! What he specialized in was Operations Planning; he was a sort of combination of M and Bill Tanner - effectively,a Spymaster rather than a spy.

    The first sight of Scotland, which you said was so beautiful, is a valley called Glen Etive, in the Highlands. I’ve been there, and it is gorgeous! Interestingly, it is just south of Glencoe, which is known for stunning scenery. In the day I was driving on the road through Glencoe, it was packed with other tourists and tour buses, so many I just could not feel comfortable, so I told my mom to enjoy the scenery while I kept my eyes on the road. We finally emerged onto the main road at the end of that valley, and I drove a few miles until I saw the little sign for Glen Etive. I had it on my list of roads to drive on when I saw it referred to as “the prettiest drive to nowhere.” We turned onto it, and the people disappeared so that we were one of only two cars on the entire 17-mile-long stretch of road to the loch at the end. The scenery wasn’t breathtaking like Glencoe’s, but it was beautiful nonetheless, as you saw onscreen.

    Casino Royale's still my favourite, Skyfall's second. If you want to stay fairly modern, Pierce Brosnan's four movies mostly hold up really well - especially GoldenEye, which is the same director as Casino Royale (Martin Campbell)! Beyond that, here are my classic recommendations: From Russia With Love - just a really cool cold war spy thriller Goldfinger - highly problematic female character but otherwise a classic You Only Live Twice - even more problematic in parts but, well, did you watch Austin Powers? Watch this. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - the only George Lazenby Bond movie but it's probably the closest to the book Live and Let Die - quite a disturbing one really! The Man With the Golden Gun - Christopher Lee as the villain! Can't go wrong The Spy Who Loved Me - arguably the most iconic Bond movie Moonraker - if you want outright silliness but still a good time! The only thing I'll say is that this was made after Star Wars... A View To A Kill - Christopher Walken as the villain! The Living Daylights - Timothy Dalton takes over, possibly my favourite pre-90s Bond movie

    The place you saw it is located in around the sea of Japan. It is called Hiroshima island..... It is actually a popular hide out for Bon villains.... The island was built and used for coal mining in the late 1800s; But when cold sharply decreased in the early 1900s it was abandoned. Whole families would go there just for the hope of work and a better life that's why you see buildings entire apartments were built Is 4 miners and their families.

    I remember seeing this in theaters. It was the second Bond movie I made it all the way through--Bond's never been a favorite set of mine. There was a great article I read that got me to watch it about how each of the action scenes were a trip back in time through action movie styles approximately equivalent to each Bond actor's era. You start in the 2010s action movies ala Bourne Identity etc, move through the neon lights and Asian settings of the 80s, and continue back and back until you end up at Skyfall which is "before" Bond.

    This is, hands down, the best Bond. It's not close. Sure, others may have _created_ the legend, but this one told the best story, had one of the best villains, the objective production quality was faultless, AND it managed to flawlessly and tastefully bring a good chunk of callbacks and fan service into the plot. Fan. Fucking. Tastic.

    I think the reason this is my fav Bond film is that I'm weak for teams and with the addition of Eve, Q and Mallory the MI6 Squad is just really fleshed out. I'm totally biased because I adore Ben Wishaw as an actor but I think it's still fair to say that the dynamic between Bond and Q is done really well in these last couple films; Bond having a support system is kind of ignored by fans sometimes in order to focus on the lone maverick image but this idea of having someone in the earpiece and monitoring him really adds to the modern spy film feel. The directing in this is also really great and Silva is an excellent classic Bond-type villain with a modern feel. It sucks to lose Judi Dench but if you're going to replace her, Ralph Fiennes is such a perfect choice; his dry delivery is so funny and he plays off of Daniel Craig really well.

    15:20 just want to say I think the word associations are mis subtitled at the end there, the doctor starts with the word "gun" and bond's response to "Skyfall" sounds more like "gun" than "done" to me, it's meant to be a very deliberate covering move because of the emotional weight we later find out is attached to it, "done" also works tbf but "gun" is a very pointed refusal to play along with the game

    WATCH THEM ALL, IN ORDER!!! You get to watch the evolution of big-budget action film-making through the decades. You'll also see where a lot of classic action-movie, science-fiction and super-hero tropes come from. Not just that, you get to watch the evolution of "cool" and see how Bond himself and the idea of the man's man changes over time. The tone will veer wildly. Some of them are dark, intense, and deadly serious, others are cartoonishly silly, and some are just downright weird. And some of them, without mincing words, just suck. But here's the thing - EVEN THE BAD ONES ARE FUN. There are a few that are *classic* "so-bad-it's-good" movies. But you'll find, a lot of them are unironically just damn good spy thrillers. Start with "Dr No," 1962. You're going to have a blast.

    My other thought is that I'm torn on the twist regarding Bond's past. On the one hand, the whole secret of Skyfall and the setting for the final confrontation is very cool on its own. But I prefer the theory that James Bond is a nickname that gets passed down to every 007, so that none of them (except maybe Connery, the original) was actually named that but all of them go by it. It makes sense of the change in actors every generation, allowing them to coexist in the same movie universe.

    This is the BEST bond since Goldeneye, not that the other films are bad just Skyfall is the first Daniel Criag Bond film that Feels like a Great Bond Movie and Golden Eye was the last Great Bond picture Brosnans other films are good but his Debut outing was simply the BEST and up there with some of the classics. I`d love you guys too go through the whole series... and Yes MGM used a Lion. What I love about this Bond is that it brings Bonds squad Q and Money penny Q is the Gadget guy the original actor in the original run of films who worked with all the previous bonds from Connery to Brosnan. Money penny has been played by 3 other actors in the previous series the 1st acted with Connery, Lazenby, and Moore as they were all about the same age when Dalton took over they recast the role so she could be age-appropriate and Brosnan got his own Money Penny also. I'd love to see you guys react to ALL the bond films and YES where suits!

    my one and only complaint about Skyfall is that it feels like it came too soon like, this shouldn't have been a third movie, and definitely shouldn't have been the one to come after the mess that was QoS; it's fantastic, but it implies that he was in the service for a few more movies than what he got

    I remember when Daniel Craig was cast to be the new James Bond and people were going nuts about a "blond Bond." After years of watching the franchise it was Craig's interpretation that made truly love and appreciate the character. Skyfall is one of the best hands down, watching it in theatres was an experience to say the least.

    The impact of this one is that much greater if you've seen all the previous films, in my mind. Especially the Pierce Brosnan era which featured the same M played by Judy Dench. Regardless, this film was something of a merge of classic, old school bond with the Craig era's more modern take - reintroducing Q and Moneypenny, bringing back the Aston Martin from Goldfinger, and a few other little touches.

    I’m like one of the four people who actually likes quantum of solace lol. I just like it because it’s the meanest bond out of any movie in the franchise. The plot really isn’t about the super villains it’s about bond going on a killing rampage to get revenge. Also, it suffered due to the writer strike at the time but I actually really enjoy It as a lean mean Bond revenge flick.

    This film begins to really build up the usual supporting cast around Bond. In the original movies, there was M (head of Missions for MI6), his secretary Miss Moneypenny, and Q (Head of Q Branch or Quartermaster). Judi Dench had been M since the Pierce Brosnan era, before her it was Bernard Lee (1962-1979, basically Connery through Moore) and Robert Brown (1983-1989, the end of Moore and Dalton). Q was one of the most consistent characters as Desmond Llewellyn played the role from 1963 in 'From Russia With Love' until 'The World Is Not Enough' in 1999, with John Cleese (of Monty Python) taking the role as the heir to the position in 'The World Is Not Enough' and ending with 'Die Another Day' (2002), which ended the Brosnan era. Miss Moneypenny was played by Lois Maxwell from 1962 to 1985 but was not really well recast until Samantha Bond took the role during the Brosnan era, and she was really cool in those films. Up to this film, there has only been Bond and M, now we have Moneypenny, which was one of the spoilers of the film they kept under wraps, but she had a first name now...Eve Moneypenny. And we also now have Q with Ben Whishaw taking the role. And the fact that this film also made Ralph Fiennes the new M was another spoiler they kept under wraps. The funny thing is the name of Fiennes's character Gareth Mallory is consistent with M always having an "M" in their real names like Admiral Sir Miles Meservy (the original M) and Dench's M was named Olivia Mansfield. James Bond is his real name, he usually had aliases depending on the assignments. His father was named Andrew, and his mother was named Monique Delacroix. Andrew was Scottish, and Monique was Swiss. James was orphaned at age 11 due to a mountain climbing accident that killed his parents. The Aston Martin DB5 was introduced as Bond's car first in 'Goldfinger'. Since then, it has been the OG automobile for Bond. He had others (Lotus Espirit, BMW, and different Aston Martin makes)...but the DB5 is Bond's car. Besides the machine guns, it had a whole array of other bells and whistles. This was the first Craig film that actually brought all of the pieces of the Bond legacy back into play and would see Craig through the next 2 films. Roger Deakins, who was the cinematographer for this film, was one of the nominees for Best Cinematography at the Oscars the year it came out. Adele's song 'Skyfall' won the Oscar for Best Song...and her performance during the Oscars was AMAZING!!!

    So, this movie has another interesting context. Casino Royale released in 2006. Quantum of Solace released in 2008, and suffered because of the writer's strike. Skyfall came out in 2012, and it has the distinction of being the first 007 movie to have been entirely produced AFTER the wild-ass success of The Dark Knight. There were a lot of movies that came out around this time that tried to reproduce what made The Dark Knight so special. Amazing Spider-Man, Star Trek Into Darkness, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men First Class, Rise of Planet of the Apes, etc. But I think that Skyfall was the most successful at it. Turns out psychological espionage thrillers are generally better suited to spy movies than superhero movies. Who could've possibly guessed?
