Godzilla Minus One is also made for the fans...just they made is a lot better with a lot small budget.

I was reading reviews earlier after I saw it. They were ridiculous. One woman literally said “I didn’t dislike it.” But still left a rotten review. A lot of these critics went there and came out mad it wasn’t a groundbreaking nuanced critical thinking film. It’s monsters battling. These are the people we’re supposed to take movie advice from.

Critics review films based on Film Theory which includes the direction, writing, casting, acting, pacing, VFX, sound design, cinematography, etc, etc. They judged with a more objective mindset than audiences who just want to watch dumb fun monster fights. They're hardly ever on the same page. But when they are, you get the Minus One treatment.

Pure opinion. The audience score won't guarantee longevity in the series. A combination of good critics and good audience score will. Why? Because, whether you like it or not, general audiences pay attention to critic reviews before seeing films. These days especially with how bad most films are becoming. When they see negative critic scores but good audience scores it tells them one thing: Only the people who already like this IP are seeing the film and enjoying it. And this is true of the Monsterverse. The only ones rushing out to see it are Godzilla fans. The only ones giving it good reviews are Godzilla fans. If you check the audience reviews most of the negative scores are coming from folks who are seeing a Godzilla film for the first time, or are only vaguely familiar with the franchise and are judging this film more objectively than G fans who only care about the spectacle. When Godzilla fans are the only ones saying it's good, why should general audiences trust that given how bad other longstanding IP's are becoming these days?

I think most of these negative reviews are from ppl who’ve seen any monster verse film for the first time or those kids who want to look mature by faking shit .. like one review literally said “how would one build a city back after that fight in Rio, who’s accountable for those ppl like in the movie plot “?… And I am like “yeah, it’s still only 10% of the damage done by avengers while trying to save the earth”

Not so. The ones leaving bad reviews are expecting an all around good film experience. Starting with King of the Monsters in 2019, the Monsterverse has devolved into the classic trap of being all spectacle, zero substance. And saying it has "zero substance" is not a comparison to Minus One. It's a general statement. These films have no substance anymore because substance doesn't come from spectacle. The weight, sense of importance, and the impact the spectacle has on an audience all comes from what? The writing. The elements AROUND the spectacle which give it purpose and meaning. Such elements include the human story, dialogue, pacing, worldbuilding, consistency, and more. When those elements are lacking, as they are in the Monsterverse now, you get a film that's fun to watch maybe one or two times but rapidly loses its "cool" factor and the novelty of monsters fighting wears off very quickly. Look at the negative audience reviews. Most of them are either first-time Godzilla film watchers or folks who only have seen a handful of them. The rest are longtime Godzilla fans who aren't comparing it to Minus One. They're just saying it's all flash and no substance, like I've pointed out. And the "all spectacle, no substance" argument is not an opinion anymore. It's become an objective fact with the Monsterverse. While a lot of G fans appreciate that rather than loathe it, the fact of the matter is that the more they keep making the films this way the shorter this series' lifespan will be. If they'd kept the grounded and "what if it were real" philosophy that Gareth Edwards brought to 2014 this series would be enjoying actual early MCU success rather than the floundering, rushed to the climax DCEU downfall we saw with Batman v Superman and beyond. Imagine if they'd taken their time instead of rushing to what basically was a Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster remake with KOTM, and instead gave Mothra, Rodan, and at least two other original Titans their own films FIRST, teasing Ghidorah and Godzilla's impending clash a little more with each entry. In between they could have made Godzilla vs (insert new Titan here) films to keep Godzilla in the public eye, all while building up properly to the big showdown with Ghidorah. There's a reason the MCU started off so strong. They took their time, and they built it up correctly. Good writing and planning leads to billion dollar blockbuster success which is why the Monsterverse will never be anything more than another DCEU failure. Fun only for die hard fans while everyone else waves the hand saying "Meh, it was all right. What's showing in theaters next week?"

Nope. All film critics are judging films based on Film Theory. And no. Not Matpat's Film Theory. Actual Film Theory. The direction, cinematography, writing, dialogue, pacing, acting, casting, pacing, VFX, sound design, musical score, etc, etc. All of that is part of Film Theory. The Monsterverse is all spectacle, no substance. Great VFX and sound design, but nothing else. That's why critics aren't giving the film better reviews. Because, as an overall film experience, it's sub-par at best. They're objective in their analysis while the audience is subjective in its analysis, and basing theirs almost entirely on "so long as it LOOKS COOL, I'm good," which, while fine and you're entitled to your opinion, doesn't actually mean the film is good or something that more general audience goers are going to give a damn about. All the positive audience scores are from longtime G fans instead of general audiences. Give it a week, and general audiences will be saying the same thing I just did. All spectacle, no substance. Guaranteed.

It didn't start that way. Gareth Edwards said in several interviews that his philosophy for 2014 was "what if it were real?" Michael Dougherty, who directed and co-wrote KOTM, threw that away in favor of trying to make the film Showa Toho 2.0 which, in filmmaking, is a death sentence for things moving forward. As a director of a SEQUEL, his job was to maintain and build upon the worldbuilding which came before. He didn't do that. He threw it all out and effectively rebooted the Monsterverse in Showa style complete with aliens and ultra-futuristic technology which was not present in 2014 and COULD NOT have naturally developed during the 5-year gap between films. People aren't comparing this film to Minus One without good reason. The Monsterverse went from a grounded, realistic take on what it would be like for monsters to exist in this world to being stupid, mindless spectacle lacking any sense of substance. If they'd kept that original philosophy and taken their time giving Mothra, Rodan, and maybe one or two other original Titans their own films while making a Godzilla vs film in between each one, with each Godzilla vs teasing his impending showdown with Ghidorah, the films all would have seen a much greater success both critically and financially. Instead, the Monsterverse went the failed DCEU route and jumped straight from Superman to Justice League and Doomsday. All because Michael Dougherty couldn't contain his fanboyism or respect the integrity of what had come before which is supposed to be the whole point of directing a sequel.

Never really cared about critics. I knew GxK was going to get slammed but I don’t care.

I hate critics and I never listen to them, they only have to see movies as action packed and heartfelt, they literally have no imagination and they don’t know what fun is

This is why I don’t listen to the critics and just enjoy movies for what they are instead of taking them so seriously all the time I had a fun time watching this movie with my friends in imax and plan to go back and see it for a second time

Man honestly David hit it spot on i’m the biggest King Kong and Godzilla fan out here damn near obsessed but when I watched the movie last night after I left I felt very anti climactic honestly watching all the tv spots and some leaks that were coming out every great moment was kind of ruined or stale. I could see exactly where the movie was going don’t get me wrong the fights were still amazing and fun and the visuals were pretty good just didn’t hit home to me at the end the ending battle was so short and anti climactic it just let me down I’m going to watch it again and again see what I maybe missed but after the first viewing and being so hype counting down the days from since the release date was announced didn’t live up to it for me . And honestly about the humans part of story it’s so boring I damn near fought to stay up praying for kong to show back up the acting doesn’t hit for me neither does the storyline. Honestly the budget for this flim was 135 million I don’t see whynot spend another 100 million and cut out the humans entirely there’s a scene where one of the apes used sign language I believe to talk to scar king make King Kong teach the entire species and keep the humans screen time to 0

It so good and I don’t get why people hate it.

I honestly love this movie

Saw the movie out in Korea. If you like the last movie you will love this one. It was such a fun movie. My only complaint was that it coulda been longer but that’s it

The problem for more was definitely the pacing I loved that they were able to portray a good Kaiju story focused more on the Kaijus but the final battle was very very rushed.

kind of surprised but not surprised on the critic reviews being negative. didn't really look into those becasue i was kind of interested in this movie and didn't need a review in this case for the movie. i think the trailers mostly did there job for me. and i thought the VFX team did a great job with all the emoting from Kong and you kind of got what he was looking for character-wise. and now that you mention it, Godzilla was in this one a little less, but i didn't mind it based on what they were doing with him. i did kind of like how he sort of acted a little like a cat behavior-wise with making the coliseum his bed. also i really like all the fan-art of the movie that has been making the rounds online algorithm wise via the repost pages that make their way into your algorithm feed. i agree, good character-wise for Kong i think like Godzilla a little more + Mothra, but totally happy to see Kong get some time to shine also i liked all the soundtrack musical bits that came from the Kaiju dentist guy was nice hearing all the song energy bits that came from him thanks for the reminder about Letterboxed i kind of forgot how all over the place and a little more reflective those reviews can be of a movie.

I went the first time and it was great. Brought my son and nephews the 2nd time and it was even better. They really were cracking up at Bernie. Great job lots of fun

Criticizing certain aspects of the movie is one thing, but a lot of these negative reviews are bashing the film based on the mentality of "Minus One's Good, Minus One won an Oscar, this movie's bad because it's not like Minus One". Film criticism shouldn't be based on how something compares to something else. Imagine if every other Batman movie was criticized based on how it compares to The Dark Knight or if every movie that happened to have a shark in it was was immediately compared to Jaws, that wouldn't be fair criticism.

Just got back from watching it and I really enjoyed the movie. It was fun, it was great and simple as a Kaiju/monster movie should be. Some nice surprises I didn't expect which I enjoyed. I know I'll be seeing it again.

I geve 8/10 the first time I watched it, and then 9.9/10 the sacred time I watched it There was NOT enough Godzilla in a movie called Godzilla x Kong: The new empire.

Cris you are absolutely right about KoTM but your thought that GvK in the tone of the first Godzilla film would be boring like KoTM is totally off. A GvK film in that tone would've slapped especially if developed the Hollow Earth correctly. They could've made it how they originally did where the tunnels connect the hollow Earth and make it easier for them to travel around the Earth, some kaijus start making their way to Skull Island, Kong finds out about the tunnels makes his way onto actual populated land, Godzilla goes to him to try to control him and they fight for dominance right there. It would've been amazing seeing a character like Ford just experiencing that from the ground and show the actual scale of Godzilla and Kong.

Understand what you're saying is presumption of what you think would happen based on one movie not a fact. I see it all the time where people presume this or that would happen if this or that was done. Fans often get lost in their own reality forgetting that these films are not their own ideas to know how these fictional stories will play out. I do believe presumption plays a major role in the negativity that goes on against movies in today's world.

I had great fun with this movie. If you grew up with this series you see what the director was doing. Yes ...Hollywood updated it and made it grounded with the 2014 Godzilla but it was obvious where the series was heading. Can they go back to the grounded concept? Yes but it would have to be a different director with that vision.

Literally none of the people matter, unless they actually have watched Godzilla movies, or at least our fans of the Godzilla franchise. But if not, they shouldn’t be able to do that because they don’t even know how good this franchise is like AHHHHHH!!!

It's actually kind of fun seeing such negative vitriol towards a movie about fighting monsters, coming from talentless hacks reduced to bashing films meant to b silly fun (like original fightin' monster films)for fans looking for that kind of entertainment.

The Movie was Great imo, felt a little rushed but I seen it in IMAX the other day and visually it was stunning! Heard one person in the theater comment about the effects a little but other than that I was hyped up the whole movie!!🍿 🔥

I actually just watched this today, I am happy that people liked it, but I still want to give you my honest opinion though. I didn't like it, I don't know if it was just me or not, but for some reason, the film looked all choppy and blurry, especially when it the fights started happening, which is weird to see that in the theaters. I don't know if it was just the harkins I was in, but for some reason, even though the previews looked fine, the film didn't. The movie started to get all blurry looking and only didn't look bad when either a character was right focused on the camera or if it was in a dark setting, and it was giving me a headache. And do to that blurry parts, it made it hard to watch the fights. Aside from that being my main problem, the only other one is how much they focus too much on kong and very little about godzilla. That is just my opinion though, I am happy a lot of people are enjoying it. I respect you guys' opinion

I saw the movie yesterday. And sadly I was pretty let down. Skar king was introduced way too late to make any impact and the human plot line this time around was a slog. Even Dan Steven’s charisma couldn’t save it for long. Despite being the same length as GvK it felt so much longer due to the terrible pacing. Even the fights don’t feel nearly as epic as GvK. The only redeeming factor was the King Kong and suko scenes. I wanted to love the movie so bad, but by the time Skar king finally shows up over an hour into the movie, I was so mentally checked out that I didn’t care anymore. Maybe I’ll enjoy more on the second watch. (and before anyone says it: I am NOT comparing it to minus one. I’m only comparing it to GvK, wingard previous monsterverse movie, which I loved)

The human plot line was fine, in fact I found it easily more entertaining than any of the MV characters (except skull island). I thought this movie EASILY felt shorter because it feels like I’m being rushed to watch, they keep making these movies so short and there’s not enough time to develop ANYONE. The sets and fights were easily more epic than GVK, there’s just not enough of team fights.

@@eduardoescobedo904 comparing GvK to GxK is perfectly fine. They’re made by the same people, starring the same characters with essentially the same story. One was just executed much better. I know wingard can do much better and that’s why I was so disappointed

To me the fights were just a little to short😫😫I wish the fights were longer some parts felt rushed a bit but it was very enjoyable

GXK made me have an existential crisis (BUT IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE) I can never look at nature with disrespect ever again, this movie just made me love nature and kaiju just SO MUCH!!! (even tho I did since 2016) I still wanna go back to the theater :(

Tbf, a lot of these negative reviews are from people who seem to not have a funny bone. How can you negatively dive in critically to a silly popcorn flick of kaiju fights?? These people must be fun at parties. It's almost like they don't understand how Wingard is making a modern version of the Showa Era of Godzilla, the Toho movies he grew up on. I don't know...i mean...this is monster fights, it ain't Schindlers List 😂 how do you take yourselves seriously and be negative towards this type of movie *face = palm*

At the end of the day, money talks. People all over the world are spending money to see it and profits are being made. That’s what matters with making another one.

I loved the movie and I think the reasons for these negative reviews, are very ridiculous. "Theres to much CGI"! Its a King Kong, Godzilla Movie. "There only interested in making the scenes look cool"! Once Again!... "Theres to many Monsters"! Good! If there weren't many Kaiju's. Are we just supposed to watch a Depressed Kong get some dental work and Godzilla take a nap before getting an energy drink? I agree Godzilla did not get a lot of screen time. But also Godzilla has had his story told in 3 of the past 5 movies they've made in this monsterverse. Where Kong has about 1.5. So I understand why this story would lean more toward King Kong's journey. And the Dr's Short Haircut looks good. That dudes just a hater.

The fact that a lot of the negative reviews are comparing this to Minus One really is really disheartening (especially given how different the two movies are). Minus One getting a lot of praise is great, but not if that praise comes at the expense of the rest of the franchise...

Well, I'm gonna see this film tonight and I don't think the reviews for this one really matter as it's Godzilla and Kong kick a** once again.

It’s a fun which monsters fight each other don’t care for humans. I liked it very much and I loved every moment of kong. Only thing I wish the last fight scene was a little longer. But still good movie. Critics are dumb.

I think people are honestly just hating to hate for no reason they just want to compare it to Minus one

Watched it friday and i was having a smile on my face amd laughed a few times ao o found it enjoyable and had good time with it absouletey amazing film and ots at top of best films

I was going into this movie looking for a fun time, watching giant monsters throwing hands, not a deep and developed story and I got what I wanted from the movie. 8/10

The only problem is pacing because skarking appeared too late

Seen it last night, movie was fire and entertaining all throughout, this should definitely not be compared to Godzilla minus one which was a completely different take on the character, I'd give it a solid 9.5/10

I think it said 92% audience score

I agree with you about Godzilla KOTM. for me, it's at the bottom of the list of all the Monsterverse movies if I were to rate them from worst to best. The human characters in that movie were the most insufferable and annoying out of all the other ones that they literally brought down the movie and made it unenjoyable. The story was uninteresting, the Monarch agents looked like a bunch of fools trying to stop the enemy, and Godzilla fighting Ghidorah scenes were the only thing that mattered. Serizawa's sacrifice was the best moment in the entire movie, it made it feel like that scene didn't belong in the movie lol. Millie bobby brown's character and her mother were the worst and most annoying part of the movie. Jia and Dr Ilene had a much better mother-daughter relationship than them.

Godzilla minus one killed the franchise don’t at me lol. Now every godzilla movie has to be compared to minus one which it shouldn’t .

@@oscaredits_1 It's ironic that Minus One fans are mocking the MonsterVerse fans over the critical reception of GxK, yet they had a complete meltdown over Minus One not getting a perfect 100% critic score and complained about the movie only getting one Oscar nomination and win. I like Minus One, but it's starting to become an annoying thorn in the side for the Godzilla franchise. The sad thing is that this type of discourse is only going to hurt the film's reputation in the long run.

My thing is, I hate when people complain about how fast or sometimes small the titans seem. But my thing is, this movie is ABOUT THE FREAKIN TITANS. We are mainly seeing the world from their perspective know (mainly and especially Kong). The previous movies focused more on the human perspective, which would make sense as to why the titans look like they move slow and are extra heavy, it looks more menacing to a human. But, following a titan around and seeing from their perspective, it would make sense that their movements look faster/normal speed. It's a dumb complaint to me.

I'm not a fan of minus one. Gxk was okay movie. I didn't like it probably my least favorite monster verse movie. I just tired of Godzilla and team up movie and kong as main character. I want a solo separate movie of Godzilla as a main character with toho kaiju as villian. Gxk was very disappointing in terms of story as well. The leaks made better story and connection better than the movie itself. If their still gonna make Godzilla n kong team up movie with kong as main focus than just make solo movie rather than making Godzilla involved in it to just grabbed money from Godzilla fan's. Edit: shimo was a disappointment but skar king was badass, skar king what i want kong to be like. 6/10

Horrendous first take

I swear some critics are just outta of touch. I get opinions are opinions, but if a movie is going for a fun blockbuster and they succeed in that goal, then is it really a bad movie or just not a movie for you?

If the critics score is low don’t let that lower your expectations for a movie

Movie was actually great and i went in it not thinking it would be good but really enjoyed my time watching it.

Anyone else thinks critics are being too harsh on movies nowadays?

exactly, i mean i understand madame web. but movies like frozen empire definitely deserve the harsh criticisms that it got. ok it wasnt a good movie, was not bad either. critics nowadays have doubled down on their ultra high criteria for movies

Definitely, I feel like franchise like the MCU and DCEU has oversaturated the market of mediocre blockbuster films where now a film has to be hold to really high standards like Oppenheimer or Godzilla Minus One but theirs nothing wrong with having a movie that’s just simple good fun.

I was ok . I enjoyed Godzilla king of the monsters more sadly but that’s my opinion 6/10 for me sorry I wish it was more like Godzilla 2014 or king of the monsters though and I hope this isn’t the last movie. 🍿

I felt the same way about king of the. This is what kotm should have been, or at least the final battle.

Even if it wasn't the best, the majority will all agree that it certainly was. But atleast there's a few of us who understand the complexity of how bad it was. Whether or not you're a fan of Godzilla.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I saw the new Ghostbusters movie and it wasn't good at all. Too many human talking scenes and barely any ghost and action scenes.

I loved Ironman Kong and Super sayian Godzilla!! Super Sayian Godzilla charging up like he's Vegeta about to shoot off a final flash was super cool!!

Dude the movie was awesome! It was fun and silly just like ones that I use to watch with my dad.

Bruh i just saw the movie, i legit almost cried 😂 i was glued to the screen because HANDS WERE THROWN . Go see this movie trust me
