Cold approach is hard because most guys are too in their heads. Especially if you're in your early 20s, you don't have the body you want, or the money or the success/experience in life, so it just builds up and you think you're not good enough.

Approaching someone is really no big deal, in my opinion set aside looks and all that and look at the situation objectively. Most guys are just afraid of looking like an idiot in front of a girl they like, or anyone period, and there is nothing wrong with that, it's a concern that any considerate person with common sense would have. However, if you're a guy having trouble approaching girls, the best advice I can give you in a situational sense it to put yourself in situations where approaching a girl is normal, a situation where it's not blatantly obvious that the only reason you're approaching them is to ask for a date. The reason for this is that people are a lot more comfortable in an environment where they share like interests, like interests are the foundation of friendships, and friendships are the foundation to relationships, friends with benefits, what have you, but especially long term relationships where compatibility is key. For instance if you like a certain type of music, go to a respective venue, rather it be a concert, a festival, what have you. If you're interested in a new line of work, try your hand at doing different lines or work, if you're interested in studying something in specific join a study group, join a facebook group related to whatever it is you're most interested in. Find girls that you actually have something in common with instead of blindly approaching people, be selective enough to choose how you spend your time and energy when it comes to hobbies as well as approaching women. A lot of men are just desperate and try the volume approach, which usually ends up being a waste of time unless they have several things working in their favor as well as luck depending on what it is they're looking for. A lot of men undervalue themselves and don't even realize how selective they can be, thus choose the volume / cold approach, the problem is even if it does get you dates, sex, whatever the chances that you have anything in common with the person is a crap shoot. The volume approach can desensitize you to to the anxiety that comes from approaching women, but to be honest it's an ass backwards approach, focus on your life, knowing your own value, putting yourself in situations where you're not at a loss for words, and have some ground to stand on to begin with, in situations where it's "normal" to do exactly what you want to do and know what the right thing to do is and you'll realize there is nothing to be overtly anxious about to begin with. (this may require hard work and a large amount of learning) I know things are different from individual to individual, but what it's really about is understanding life and having enough courage to do what you want to do. If you understand yourself and other people well enough, it very wall can be 1 number and you've got a date. In my opinion it's a more healthy practice for young men to focus on how they are living their life, studying human nature and being an authentic person and other things which require courage and understanding, instead of just spamming cold approaches and desensitizing themselves. From the moment we are born until the moment we die there are gonna be situations that make us anxious as people, it's not about not being anxious, what life is about is what we choose to do as individuals and why, in the face of the fact we are wildy unique individuals with different problems and different things going for us, all whilst essentially wanting the same things. People have to find their own way. I was born with a potentially terminal illness, and all my life I dealt with anxiety especially around girls until I was in my early 20's, what happened with me was I had some near death experiences that led me to take a serious look at how I'm living my life and make changes. After that, even though I may still feel some awkwardness or anxiety in some social situations, it's never anything compared to some of the other things I've been through. I think it's important for people to really experience life to it's fullest and learn everything they can to be ready for life in general, before just assuming they need to date someone. When someone special is around, you'll know it and even then don't put them on a pedestal, find out the right way to Live YOUR life and do so with confidence, relationships and other secondary things come with ease when you put yourself in the right place. If you chase something bigger than the opposite sex, 9/10 the opposite sex will end up chasing you because they'll be able to see that you're not like 90% of desperate people, you still have to know how to assess situations and seal the deal though lol

10 years ago in my early army days(19 years old) whenever i was home on leave, we’d hit the local mall and do this. We’d give each other something to say and turned it into a competition. Normally silly things like, “compliment her ears” or something about how nice the stars are even though it’s noon and indoors. They made me compliment a cop on his toes and as if I could see them. He wasn’t happy. But I’ve always been introverted and it really helped me to come out of my shell.

I once approached a girl in highschool for the first time who was in my class and we talked for about a week during the class. One day one of her female friends comes up during lunch and aggressively confronted me in front of all of my friends that the girl had a boyfriend and didn't want to talk to me. Somewhat traumatic but I did get more comfortable talking to girls after that, so good practice I guess.

This is awesome. I always tell people (especially sales people) to record themselves. It’s crazy how unaware people are sometimes. But honestly the only way to get more comfortable in those situations is repetition so good for you Derek for forcing yourself into those awkward spaces. Everyone’s baseline is different as far as how comfortable they are with face-to-face interaction but even the most relaxed speakers can learn a lot from watching them selves on tape. A lot of times your body language is giving off a vibe that you’re not intending to give off but you have to be able to see it to fix it.

I agree with the whole “you need to go through this phase so you don’t put your first serious girl on a pedestal.” I started going hard with dating apps in high school to build some confidence in myself, and got denied a lot, had some success but never actually had sex with any of the girls. I quickly found a girl that I actually liked and just stuck with her. And while she was cool and didn’t pull any bullshit, when I broke up with her 2 years later it was fine at first but then it crushed me months after when I got this idea in my head that I couldn’t do any better. And now I’ve been stuck in this mental rut for the last 5 years almost. Mind you I’ve got other life issues that have held me back but the thoughts of her still haunt me. This video has given me a good dose of motivation though to start genuinely trying again, if I get denied I get denied, like you said treat it like a video game, you die, you respawn, and try again.

I'm not trying to be a douche. But I despised that women expect men to approach them when I got around 21. Around 25 I would sit at the bar alone and watch a game and it's crazy but women would almost feel a responsibility to talk to me bc I was in this social area alone. I will say you have to be decently attractive for this to work. But having women initiate is a great feeling. I still cold approach women but I have to feel something for me to do it. You're the man as always Derek. Showing that old footage takes being confident in who you are now.

I never cold approached with a friend. Always alone. It got fun after the first few and almost like a game. I had good success after just a few so that helped my confidence in life. Not to say there wasn’t goof ball embarrassments. But honestly even the total failures helped in a way because I knew that I was doing something most guys could never do. So if your reading this, just put on a good looking outfit, brush your teeth, head to target and pick one out of the heard. I would recommend doing a little pre flirting like catching some eye contact first. Then just walk up and introduce yourself, give her a compliment on something she obviously put work into (hair, nails, a piece of jewelry) avoid creepy shit like complimenting her body right away. Just say you thought she was really cute and you would kick yourself if you didn’t say something, but… I’m kinda in a hurry so we’ll talk again soon.

Man, you are reviewing your story and I'm here all anxious smh. Like many have said already lots of respect for sharing such an intimate process of growth with EVERYONE. I have my fair share of these interactions, and my friends refuse to EVER put them behind. Maybe, next time I should pull this move and bring this decade old topic at the holiday dinner table.

Derek I loved this video it made me so nostalgic! You know when I think about it, it was the PUA scene that set me on the path to self improvement. The girls were still important but for the first time I realised I had to work on my confidence/self esteem, looks & physique and lifeskills and knowledge etc Real Social Dynamics were the guys I followed!

So true dude. Went through the pickup phase too. Learned a lot about myself and social interaction/social awareness/intelligence. Learned a lot about how my negative perception of myself was a choice and not truth. And had a lot of fun in that process too. Those highs are crazy. Would not be the guy I am today if never did that. Now I’m just my natural self, if I see someone I’m interested in I walk up. That’s how ya should be, man shit. Go for what ya want
