If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)

@@AidPast it’s difficult / impossible to change your culture after a certain point in life unless you make a conscious choice to (which is often not seen as genuine). To be British is to have political membership to Britain, but to be English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish is a cultural identity that you cannot gain through citizenship or any other legal means. It takes living in a place from a young age to fully adopt its culture and norms; if you grow up somewhere else and move later on, you’ve already gone through that process in your home country. Evan is British now but he will also always be American because that’s the culture he came from. He’s never going to lose his accent, for example, or his opinions about pizza lol

Hey Evan, I literally got my citizenship 2 weeks ago, almost at the same time, but in Derbyshire. I’m just shocked watching this as it’s SO different than mine 😂 For your curiosity: - I was not allowed guests - The lady was very kind in helping me setup my iPhone+Gorillapod, even standing where I would have stood so I could frame it right - I was offered from the beginning to take my mask off if I wanted (I politely declined) - I was not asked for a pen, nor did I sign anything at all!! - A tiny table was beside my chair with a small paper with the pledge of allegiance on it, and was just asked to read it, not go one by one! - There was no Ad!! It was actually quite straightforward, everything was 5min or so. Just an intro welcoming me into the British family, no mention about the area, I read the pledge, and she said congratulations and put the date on my certificate, and gave it to me! We even chatted on if I’d been here long etc - There was no national anthem! - When checking my phone I thought I’d erased it for a second, and the lady kindly said “don’t worry, we would have done it again if needed!” - She offered to take pictures with my phone of me with the certificate by the Queen and the flag. But there was no extra paper with the low-quality JPG!!

Oh gosh, that was so different to mine. I did my ceremony in Northern Ireland, in 2019. It was a group ceremony, as it was pre covid, and was presided over by the Lord Lieutenant for Londonderry, although the ceremony was in Lisburn with none of that PR for the borough malarkey. We all did our pledge together, and then we were awarded our certificates one by one and afterwards there was tea and biscuits and little cakes. We were also only allowed 2 guests, the room wasn't very big. I found it very moving, and started crying when I was given my certificate, much to my embarrassment. It was the culmination of an arduous and expensive journey, of several visas, then ILR, and then finally applying for citizenship so it was also a big relief. My passport arrived very quickly, so hopefully yours won't take too long. I have forgone dual citizenship though, that might complicate it a bit for you. Enjoy being British, I certainly do ♥

As far as I can remember, the lady just said a very short 'congratulations and welcome' kind of introduction, and then we went on to the swearing in, the anthem & pics with the Queen. I did the secular version of the pledge, and picked the one that said citizen rather than subject, so it was fun to see yours be different.

@@georgeprout42 It's not that bad. Particularly the third verse, I find quite stirring. And the tune is popular enough that it's the national anthem of another country, has been the national anthem of tons countries in the past (Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Greece, Hawaii), and is the tune to a patriotic American song. Jerusalem is about England, no. Rule Britannia, I suppose is okay - though probably too controversial in a post-imperial era and thus couldn't be a unifying song, so again no. The really stirring amazing bit of Land of Hope and Glory isn't set to words, and the bit that is is all about expanding our borders, so no. Not every country can have a Le Marseillaise. And I don't think we should one... the sedate God Save the Queen is ideal for the UK imho.

Hi! First and foremost: My print arrived yesterday, and it is truly spectacular. I was really taken aback because it is so much more impressive than the (already good) picture on the site. Your citizenship ceremony is a hoot! When I got German citizenship, I went to the (very small) office of the officer who had handled the procedure. He smiled and asked me to stand up, saying, „There needs to be a bit of ceremony to this.‘“ Then he said, „Congratulations on becoming a German citizen,“ shook my hand and gave me my certificate (which, just for the record, is truly magnificent; no cheap JPEG image here!). And that was that. No oaths of allegiance, no singing of the anthem. A few months later, I went to a reception (held three times a year) at the Hamburg Town Hall for new citizens. Much more impressive ceremony in a beautiful setting, but a reception with a couple of speeches and refreshments. But that was absolutely voluntary.

This woman is HYSTERICAL. I'm loving this! I don't think she has any notion of how beautifully she would fit into a Monty Python sketch... I was half expecting her to tell you you were going to be asked to swear loyalty to the Borough of Hounslow. Poor old Queenie seems genuinely incidental! Listen to the first line of the national anthem? What, only the first line is required? Can you just leg it afterwards? "God save our gracious Queen, ok cool, must dash, byeeee!" By the way, I applaud your fight to use a properly splendid-looking camera. Excellent form!
