I've been a Messi fan for over 10 years, not because he's considered the best, but because he has that childlike joy in his eyes when he plays and he seems to be an amazing human being. I've watched this video several times and countless reactions to it, I'm a grown man and I still tear up when that reporter tells him what us as his fans and football fans in general would have loved to get the opportunity to tell him when everyone else attacked and scrutinized him. I never even paid attention to football until my son started playing as an 8 year-old. This was 10 years ago, when Messi was arguably at the peak of his powers, and the thing that always stood out for me was that you never saw him being anything but a fantastic example of good sportsmanship, especially for young, impressionable kids. When my son scored his first goal, we went after the game and got him his first official Messi jersey, which was at the time the famous Barcelona "Unicef" shirt. He wore that thing every other day. We bonded on that, and I was so grateful my son had somebody to look up to who was such a great example, and Messi has never done anything to tarnish his wonderful reputation. No scandals, just a natural ability and it was such a relief when Argentina finally won the World Cup - the whole world breathed a sigh of relief, because everybody knew they deserved to win.

What people mean by 'prime' is the golden age of those players, where they have peak athleticism, peak performance, peak everything. I think the best year for Leo in that regard was 2012, when he was an absolute monster on the pitch. He had 69 games, he scored 22 assists and 91 goals. 91 goals whilst Ronaldo scored slightly over 60, considered the second-best goalscorer, and above entire teams like Manchester United. One man, against an entire team's worth of players, and still came on top. That year Leo proved just how devastatingly efficient he can be on his own on the pitch. In regards to player performance, I would not say he has declined significantly, but his play style and where he focuses in the game changed throughout the years. Whilst in the earlier years, he was a devastating attacker as well as a supporter, nowadays he likes to assist others in playing well and being more involved in play-making rather than goalscoring and demolishing opponent defenses, albeit he still does so occasionally and has proven himself to still be capable of that. I think he is different than most players, in that we don't see much of a physical decline, but rather a shift in play-style and overall game composition due to his gained experience and also his role being different than the one he used to have in Barcelona.

Going to try to give you an Argentinian POV without being completely biased. Van Gaal has a history of mistreating and declaring against talented players that don't defende much, most notably Di Maria (part of Argentina's World Cup team) that ended un benched by Van Gaal in Mancerster United, and Riquelme (whose distinctived goal celebration Messi recreated in front of Van Gaal) that got to Barcelona in 2002 as a rising star and didn't get to play much with Van Gaal as coach. Add to that some somewhat spicy pre match declarations by the Dutch (probably a bit misunderstood as cocky/over confident by the Argentinian players) and the memory of a tight encounter in the 2014 WC, and you have the perfect fuel for the fire the players brought to the match. And the final element for that match to be a complete mess: one of the worst, most protagonism-hungry referees in the world. Btw, nice reaction, love the little psycholigical analysis you make, looks like everything goes so fast through your mind that you end up unsure if what you just said made sense or not, but I always felt I understood exactly what you wanted to say, that you worded everything nicely :)
