Eugene is exceptional on the bass and Jinjer is one of the few bands where the bass is so prominent in the mix, and just as well because he is a massive driving force in the band. Look at the song Who's going to be the One, live. Excellent base work. Then straight afterwards go look at the Bass playthrough video that Eugene did for the song. You will be impressed and will really take note of him for ever more. Here is the link for the bass playthrough kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHislaxrabLbkbA.html

** amazing bass player ** (Eugene Abdukhanov - his name) Eugene is actually the "culprit" of the current star cast of Jinjer: he and Tatiana were born and lived in Gorlovka (Donbass, Ukraine) and were a couple of 10-12 years ago. Then he and she were part of one local rock crowd, although they played in different bands. In the same crowd in 2008 a young rock band Jinjer appeared whose lead-vocalist was Max Fatullaev ... In 2009 Max Fatullaev emigrated to the United States, but the Jinjer band had already scheduled a concert tour around Ukraine and they did not know what to do. Eugene invited his friends to invite his girlfriend (Tatiana Shmailyuk ) to the tour - and she agreed to play one concert tour with them ... How it ended you know - she not only played several concerts with them but also became the most important element of the band and a 99%-author of all lyrics. And a year and a half later, a replacement of the bassist was required in the band - and Eugene himself took his place ... but he possesses not only unsurpassed musical talent but also an excellent manager - it was he who began to look for opportunities to organize international tours and concerts, it was at his insistence a request was sent to sign a contract with Napalm Records ... And Eugene still combines the work of a bassist with the work of a band's manager (and why the hell it needs an agent for a band that has such a Eugene) ... Tatiana and Eugene have long been “not together” for a long time (Eugene recently married and he already had a son , and Tatiana has a boyfriend Alex who is the drummer from the "Suicide Silence" band - you can can see him in recent video "quarantine collaboration Jinjer/Suicide Silence-Territory Pissing-Nirvana Cover"), but they are very good and close friends. Stay Metal! Peace!

Blast beasts are always in time and on beat. Its generally 8th or 16th note blast depending on the tempo and what the drummer wants the listener to feel. Unless its a gravity blast which is more like a one handed snare roll. Blast beats add another dynamic, contrast, and intensity. Most people that are unfamiliar with extreme metal are overwhelmed and confused by the sound of a blast beat but if they follow along to the snare hits its always on beat.

The way they compose is in fact almost like 2 different songs. They compose a song, and record it, and give it to Tati. She them listens and digests it, and writes poetic lyrics. Often her lyrics are not constrained by measures, and wrap over and syncopate. I think it adds to that mystery of "where's the loop?".

Hey there! Former black metal drummer here. I bet it has been said before, but there are techniques for blast beats that make it a lot easier than trying to force them with your muscles (it's possible, though. Kai Hahto of Nightwish does this and his blasts are amazing, look up Wintersun or Rotten Sound). It's all about finger technique and "riding the wave" of the force that the sticks give back to you when they bounce back. A good drummer will look almost bored doing blast beats, but it's just all good technique.

Regarding the radio or megaphone effect, indeed. This is the genius of Jinjer: watch Tatiana's body language and listen to the song's lyrics. It's called Teacher Teacher and is about kids being indoctrinated with a near-religious level of dedication to a dogma at school. The singer is issuing a warning against this. Watch her body language as she goes through the chorus, watch how she holds the mic, she's acting out the mannerisms of someone talking through a megaphone at a rally. She's pointing at people with a "I'm warning you this will be a problem down the line" kinda look on her face. The add these sorts of things in post to catch the feeling. Pisces was about the duality in demeanour that people born under that star sign are supposed to have. Tatiana had fish in her ear things (don't know what those are called...) and she doubled up the vocals for certain bits of the song, mainly the choruses to illustrate that duality. They do all sorts of little things like that in everything they do.

Pisces is the best song for first reactions, that's why it's first and will probably always will be. In my opinion, it's far from their best song, but I never get tired of the "WTF faces". I've seen some people take a drink of something during the little part between her first verse and chorus which leaves them choking on it. Best thing is that people usually listen to another song afterwards. Then they actually become fans themselves.

So you’ve gone down the Jinjer rabbit hole.... welcome 🙂. I’m 55 year old life long metalhead and this band has totally rejuvenated me into hard and heavy music. Yes I have a crush on Tatiana and I have been waiting for a metal goddess to come from the ashes and set the metal world on fire and she is it!!! But what’s just as much fun is that once the amazement of her performances settle in your mind your start to realize just how fucking good and put together this band really is. Their technicality and song structures along with their time signatures speak to the progressive streak in me so I really do appreciate your take on the band as a whole. My suggestion since your still early is to stick with the live stuff first even though they have great music videos as well I just love how tight and professional they are live so I would check those out first and then move on to music videos so as to not distract from the music. My personal suggestions to hear all of Tatianas ranges are 1.) who’s going to be the one live 2.) judgement and punishment live in Melbourne 3.) on the top live in Kiev 4.) pit of consciousness live in Kiev And a 5th suggestion not too many people react to would be Home Back just off of the album Macro which really showcases some surprises in her vocal styles. After these it’s a free for all it’s also really fun to go back to some early songs to see just how far they’ve matured as a band and you’ll feel like you’ve grown with them. So sorry about the long comment but this band I just can’t stop listening too or talk about so thanks for the opportunity.

You give some of the best reactions. I've only watched your Jinjer ones so far but I'm going to listen to Nightwish next. You bring such insight to the music that not many people notice. I was waiting for you to notice and comment on the ringing sound that the bass player made, and no other reactor picked that out but I knew you would. A lot of bands that have 2 guitar players have the second one to play solo's while the one plays rhythm, or both play solos, but one still keeps rhythm while the other plays the solo they just go back and fourth. Newer bands don't do that, they either play really simple solos or cut them out. Some bands I miss the solos, but with Jinjer I don't. Also the guitar player doesn't really play any high squealy notes, he's pure rhythm and it works. The whole band is just so tight and then you have Tatiana who is the perfect vocalist. I have tickets for them, but COVID screwed that up. They're virtual tickets through ticketmaster and its postponed so I'm keeping them open. I look forward to seeing them. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

Roman (guitar) seems to get the shortest shrift because, ever since they went to a single guitar player his really flashy lead pieces have been minimized (even though the parts he plays are still amazing).

I love the insight and interest you bring. This band receives a lot of superlatives but they really changed my life. Their music has helped me through the worst parts of a debilitating illness, plus Tatiana converted me to an appreciation of harsh vocals, which did nor "move me" until she opened the door. They really are that special. Best band since Pink Floyd in the 70's (yes, I'm old).

The depth of information and the quality of information you share as to what you're hearing and what you know...that brings a lot of quality to your review. Who is Gonna Be the One (live) is the "go to" Jinjer song for new listeners imho. I don't say this lightly, but that song borders on Rush levels of live perfection. It's also a well written song, regardless of the glorious performance they managed to capture.

"It sounds almost jazzy." The song after "Pisces" to round out the _King of Everything_ album is, functionally, a jazz tune called "Beggar's Dance." It recapitulates the intro to the album by using the same lyrics to a different musical setting (all of which are lines cribbed from the lyrics of other songs and slipped together). They have great songs elsewhere and I like _Cloud Factory_ , _Micro_ , and _Macro_ , but for my money, _King of Evrerything_ feels like their most "put together" album, start-to-finish. It's the album of theirs that feels like the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

oooh, again really like your comments on the technical aspects, and on the band rather than her (not saying she's not amazing, she is) If you want to listen to something very different but also really cool: Try "Heilung", either "In Maidjan" or "Krigsgaldr", preferably the LIFA (live) version. They are a german/danish/norvegian band who base their music and lyrics on runes and artifacts from northern european iron and viking age. Very cool, very different, very talented people.

Hey Chase, no he is not that underrated. I often read Tati is what she is but Eugene is such a killer. As you already mentioned in this video: His bass playing is glueing it all together and he is always tight and on top. Fun fact: There are no weird guitar solos, just a band made out of a massive block of wood right in your face. Maybe this is nearly perfection?!
