No-but-yes-but-no!
Mario Duplantier is one of metal’s most creative rhythmic and technical drummers. His polyrhythmic line in “The Art of Dying” has stumped most fans, proving to be one of the hardest pieces to count and cover. While Mario’s right hand remains in 4/4 on his ride cymbal, his right hand hits the snare in groups of three and five at 21/16, while sometimes switching to 2/4. Simple, right?!

His right hand isn't in 4/4, it's simply playing quarter notes. The entire section is in 21/16. It's whack, but that's odd metres for you.
The harmonics over the breakdown. I've never heard that before.

that bagpipe sound you were talking about could be guitar playing natural harmonics with lot of effects in the backgroud
@PJBonoVox
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely harmonics but holy crap it really does resemble bagpipes now he mentioned it.
Jean-Michel's work on this track is just amazing, Such a sick tone on that Dingwall
Duplantier brothers, Gojira!!
What you said about about Joe's vocals being raw but high quality is absolutely true. So many metal vocalists go out of their way to try to sound scary, which sometimes ends up just sounding silly because it distracts from the song, from Mars to Sirius onwards Joe's vocals have sounded much more natural and like he's screaming/growling as a human being instead of a demon or monster, and in a way that serves the song as a whole. A very confident and mature direction imo. Also, I've listened to this song a lot already and never thought of bagpipes until you suggested it. Good pick up, and it does sound like something they'd do.
@deadtotheworld00
3 жыл бұрын
It's less trying to sound like something and more about what technique you employ. Different techniques create different tonal qualities and with harsh vocals the tonal quality is very easy to differentiate.
Yup you weren't kidding when you mentioned KZread are doing KZread things, cause I wasn't notified on this one. On-point commentary as always. You and Tank pointed out the significance of the bass in here, it's Jean's new Dingwall :) really digging the punchy low end. The snare sounds nasty here too and just great mixing overall. Also stop being cute on the thumbnail please haha jk.

Aaaah KZread never loved me.well this one will be out at 6om GMT. Hopefully see you on the chat 😊
idk how they do it, but Gojira has a way with both pick scrapes and natural harmonics that is so unique to their sound. Never would've thought of those harmonics as bagpipe-like, but I can totally hear it now

Great reaction and insights! Please, now is time to react to them live, trust me they are even better out of the studio. I suggest Gojira at Red Rocks - PRAY (extended version) LIVE
One of the first bands I seen live. Fuck 06 was a good year.
That bass player can make the stones walk! I do see what you mean by bagpipes. The guitarist is doing something to the vibration of his strings to create that NASAL quality that bagpipes can have. And the drummer is determined to take us out for a hard gallop. Nice kitty!
Coming back from running and getting a KZread notification from Chase, this is a very good day :D
That breakdown gave me 20 more years of life! TASTY (love your reactions / analysis Chase Carneson)
The Bagpipe stuff is harmonics while a pitch pedal is all the way down. Btw more gojira!
Just commenting because I wanted to give a shout out to the palm mute gang. Well also shout out to that absolutely sick breakdown at the end with the harmonics on the guitar

There's a low guitar run that is 80% of the motif from Silvera.
I wasn't sure on the 1st half of this track the first time I heard it. Felt a bit soft, rock/thrash and the transitions were clean but hard... But the more I listen to it the more it's becoming an anthem of a song. It's also like someone mashed up their last 4 albums in to a single song... But with the bass equaliser on max.
Great in depth analysis man, specially on the importance of bass

Eye of the Enemy - The Shift. Trust me. This will blow your mind.
I've seen a few reactions to this song at this point, but I wasn't really into it and it wasn't til this one that it actually "clicked" with me. And it wasn't really that it earwormed and grew on me, but this time around I noticed production and writing nuances I hadn't heard the first couple times around, some of which you pointed out, some of which I heard on my own (the instrumental differences in the last chorus for example, the added synthy bits create this sort of uncomfortable pulling effect). I recommend everyone out there closing their eyes and giving this a solid listen on their own after this vid. Also that drummer is nasty, hot damn. And thanks for pointing out the bass adding so much, I'm not a bassist myself but I love love love when the bassist has dynamic range in a tune. Have a damn good day everyone.
