I've been a Gåte fan for 20 years, and I was really excited about them going for the ESC. I suppose, it is kind of at the margins, so I don't know how well it will fare, but it certainly stands out, which counts for a lot in ESC. One thing to note is that Gunnhild, the vocalist has a lot of training. She grew up with folk music, was performing publicly at the age of ten, started Gåte with her brother at the age of 12-13, and met huge success with their first record in 2002. They also gained the respect of the local folk musicians and worked with some of the legends there. I was fortunate to finally make it to one of their last concerts of the first period in 2010. Between that, she went to acting school, had more training. She really knows this stuff. But then, she says, Gåte isn't that. Gåte draws from the pure forces of nature, that they aim to channel through their music. And if you ask me, it is very convincing.

Hello! Thank you for a great reaction video! New subscriber here. I'm from Sweden and I think this is the one to beat this year. Great vocals first of all and a nice and powerful melody, but this also has the whole package, great overall production, not a dull second anywhere. I love how she's surrounded by nature combined with the stage and camera moving and the lighting making it feel like it's very dark but still light enough to see everything like a moonlit night or a night with northern lights like you mentioned, the rays of light fit perfect and the videos of forest and waterfalls, not too much, not too little. The stage really feels alive and mystical. The energy from the whole band is also great. It's such a complete package, every second of the song. I also get shivers in a good way, just like you. The singing is always the most important part and she does it so well. She seems to be a force of nature and with a complete package like this I think it'll definitely compete for the top spot. Even if this might not be the music one listens to usually, is it folk metal?, it's almost impossible to not be affected by this song, a huge wow factor here. And being a quite unique entry is usually a good thing in this competition. Nothing too weird going on here. It's also in Norwegian, I love that. I don't think Sweden is ready to send an entry in Swedish for quite some time. There's already several very good ESC songs out and most likely many more to come so I'm sure we'll get a great competition as always but this entry have set the bar very high. Btw both me and my oldest son created NRK accounts so we could vote for Gåte in the final :) The top two were so close! 250 vs 244 points! Overall very high quality in the Norwegian final I must say! It was also very fun to watch the medley of earlier Swedish ESC entries sung by former Norwegian ESC artists and Carola! Thank you Norway and good luck!

@@Janaofficialmusic The original ballad told the story about a girl who has an evil stepmother who turns her into a wolf and curses her to never turn back into a human unless she "drinks her brother's blood". One night the girl who has been turned into a wolf is able to kill the stepmother, which happened to be pregnant with her half-brother (thus drinking her brothers blood and turning human again). The moral of the tale is basically to stand up against evil forces. Not a very well-known folk tale, but quite interesting!

Here in Germany, there are some bands mixing medieval music with Metal and they are doing quite well, so I'd say there's definitely a market for the music Gåte play. In spite of being German, those German bands don't do much for me, whereas I absolutely love Gåte! Gåte sound much rawer/more untamed and darker than those German bands and Gunnhild is one of my favourite vocalists. The story exists in different versions in the Nordic countries, as such old stories often do. Presumably it also has relatives outside the Nordic countries. I have seen it claimed that this story (possibly in a related variation) is actually the origin of Cinderella. Such ancient stories were usually far bloodier than their current remains.

I don't know if I'd call it "metal guitars", but yeah it's a good song with some good rock elements! But hey, let me know if you're checking out some actual metal music as well. Would be fun to hear a reaction to something Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail, though Spiritbox may be a better entry level lol

5:37 Yeah, that's not the message at all. It's a story about a family conflict. The main character of the story is a young woman, her father marries someone who isn't her mother (presumably he's a widow), and her stepmum is horrible and uses magic to turn her into all sort of things (it's a fairytale from the time when we where still Catholics). In the end she casts a curse making her a wolf and a outlaw till she can taste her brothers blood (she doesn't have a brother), then her stepmum gets pregnant, and after attacking her and tasting her beothers blood inside her stepmoms womb her curse is lifted. Something along those lines. I haven't ever heard the original story, just the retold versions in comment fields about this song.

Keiino this year sounded like generic electro pop. Gåte is better musically.

Keiino would finish higher than this for sure, but this will still be top 15. Norway picked their traditional song rather than something that is really good for ESC 😐

I know ESC loves their europop, but I'm happy that we Norwegians opted for what I consider to be the better song.

I guess it was important for Norway to showcase their culture and language this year, I’m quite happy to see the diversity but it would be interesting to see how Europe reacts to it 🫶🏼

If Gåte did not win I would prefer the Robot song over Keiino's song. It was a more authentic attempt at the genre, and catchier to boot.

Why does everyone like keiino's song so much? It's so bland and annoying. Gåte's song is a masterpiece. You can keep all the other eurotrash imo

Can’t wait for his to flop. Almost any other song in the final would do better at ESC, but instead norway wanted to be different and send theirs screaming screeching mess of a song that isn’t even original.

This got the 2nd most votes from the jury, and the most amount of votes from the people? so its clear that people enjoy it. If all you care about in mgp is sending songs that will get recieved well and gain a high amount of votes, you are watching it for the wrong reasons. And like, this was the most original song in the norwegian contest, probaly in the entire mgp this year.

No song is everybody's taste. If Norwegian folk music combined with rock that includes a lot of history and deeper meaning isn't your taste, I'll bet there will be a lot of songs you have heard 100 times before in better versions you can vote for.
