Back to Angelina!

I am a big fan of Amy, and after her death I thought I may never hear anyone that could capture the jazzy soul that she had in her voice. ...until this 10 year old girl from Norway came along and absolutely nailed it. She captures aspects of Amy's voice that I have never heard anyone (of any age) get right. Another artist that I thought nobody would be able to emulate accurately is Lana Del Rey... and again, this kid just "gets it". Be sure to check out her Lana covers to see what I mean.

If you noticed the male violin player he instantly knew what he was hearing and put his violin down to enjoy what was happening before his eyes, he's think'in hey its not my part yet so I'm going to enjoying this.

Musical genius.

It's crazy when you think she's only 11 here. Time to react to Etta James's "I'd rather go blind" covered by Angelina. Mind-Boggling, as usual with totally different vocals.

She rewrote the words her mother did not want her to sing the original lyrics because they were to dark she changed all the words in one day. How amazing is she. Thank you!

Even at ten years of Angelina was a consummate professional.

Notice how she has the lyrics written in front of her as she sings. She wrote them (I believe) the day before, or possibly the same day, because the original lyrics are too dark for our Princess of Light. She has also performed Summertime with KORK, Norway's National Radio Orchestra, and a gig with them is a big deal! (Maybe I should put that the other way round.)

There's a back and forth version of her and Amy singing the song which is truly mind boggling. She's gifted with this 'vocal chameleon' ability to emulate the sounds of many A-list artists, especially Adele. I prefer her versions over that of Adele because she is a jazz singer and Adele is not. Jazz singers will always bring forth a more emotion laden penetration and Angelina is the reigning 'Queen Of Jazz' who will also incorporate elements of Billie Holiday ('breathy', 'whisper-like') releases as well as the 'raw' slurring of words (for added effect) that Amy Winehouse was known for. When she sings Amy's version of 'Valerie', you can shut your eyes and believe the complete presentation is Amy singing.

I doubt that there is any other 9 to 10 year old girls in Norway, who can order the Royal Radio Orchestra of Norway (KORK) to repeat the playing, because she made an error. But as they adore, love and respect her immensely, they did. I know, I know, i`m beating a dead horse, but AJ is the National Treasure of Norway for good reasons.

Its worth pulling up the lyrics of Angelina's version and comparing with the original. It becomes clear she virtually rewrote the lyrics not just changing a word or two. At 10!!!!

She is amazing!

The day before the recording session, Angelina's mother read the lyrics, then told her daughter she could not sing those lyrics. Undaunted, Angelina went straight to work and wrote completely new lyrics. The day of the recording session, Angelina, her mom and two of her classmates, went to a amusement park for a news feature a local TV station was doing. Angelina screamed each time on the roller coaster. They then drove to the recording session, Angelina kicked off her sneakers, did two or 3 takes (anyone know for sure?) and was done. Totally agree!

It is perfectly normal to keep getting gobsmacked each time you listen to her. Accept it and look forward with great anticipation to the wave of astonishment that will wash over you again and again. It is wonderful. And in this case, I don't think she was changing up the lyrics to put her stamp on the song. Look up the original lyrics and you'll see why she didn't sing them.

Angelina edited the lyrics the day before this session to make them more age appropriate. She refined her edits during the ride to this recording session.

Thanks for your beautiful reaction, Dean. It's almost unbelievable, if you didn't know, you wouldn't know you're listening to a 10-year-old girl, who in this case chooses a very particular song, which describes a very complicated and explicit human story (and this is already out of the ordinary), but this little girl, who also has a very strong bond with Amy's songs, decides to sing it anyway and does not give up so she modifies the text, certainly not suitable for her age, in the hours before the recording and thus transforms also the context of the song ... this alone expresses Angelina's musical value, this is a recognition of her musical genius, from a very young age 💛 🧡 ❤️

I heard one reactor dismiss Angelina in favor of Adele, but the response stunned me. The reactor said that he believed Adele sang better because she had actually suffered the things she sings about and Angelina hadn't. (Say what?!?) I'm in the camp that honestly asks, did Angelina do it better, or did Adele/Amy/Billie? Or even, did they both do it perfectly in their own interpretations, letting us treasure both? I prefer treasures over rankings.

Pure talent, AJ is a prodigy .No doubt about it.A totally and complete professional artist.God bless her

Dean, there is a video where you see Angelina in the engineering part of the studio listening to the first take, this here is the second take. The SECOND how humiliating, Angelina was a bit miffed with herself because she had made a FAILURE with her brand-new lyrics, she finished on the way to this studio. YES this is confirmed many times. In a way it is amusing to know that even a Angelina Jordan can fail. :-) Stay safe sir, GG

If I’m not mistaken, there were 3 complete takes but I’m not sure which one they ended up using or if the final version was an edit and mix of the 3 takes. Regardless it was a phenomenal performance by Angelina Jordan who rewrote the lyrics a day earlier and was glancing at them during the recording. What an amazing professional.

Now that we have about a decade of her recordings you can see how her prodigy is introduced in unfolds her talent again and again and again. And it’s always good if not great or astounding and it times mine boggling. Between guitar and piano accompaniment ,bands, and orchestra this wonder started in success of her own talent. We watched her mature and stay true to her talent and not settle for less. She is truly a beacon of light and a great example of maintaining quality in music. I can’t wait for the next decade to unfold

This song is so hard for singing

Fantastic reaction and comments Dean once again. There is literally nothing this young lady cannot do with her vocal instrument...it is beyond reasoning. She embellishes the artist and channels these great artists through her vocals...there has never been any one like her that I can recall in over 60+ years of listening to music... Thanks for another great reaction to another masterful performance by Angelina - this time to the Amy Winehouse classic. Angelina has the uncanny ability to switch between different genres & yet consistently deliver spectacular vocals. Looking forward to more of your Angelina reactions. (since many of us fans follow many different reactors - as your list of Angelia songs grows, it would be helpful if you set up playlists by artists). To hear yet another dimension in her voice, highly recommend How Great Thou Art. Her cover is reminiscent of Elvis & highlights her low register. Thank you. Angelina's Mother Sarah Astar was not happy with the lyrics of the song as being too adult. She insisted Angelina change them if she wanted to do the song. Angelina finished writing them in the car on the way to the recording. My understanding is that they fit so well that KORK had no need to change the arrangement and that to me is astonishing! Angelina's roots are in Jazz. She been listening and studying these icons from the past century since she was 2-3 yrs old on u-Tube. Also Angelina arranges, at least in part, if not in total, total control of all her performances. She has since she was 7-8 yrs old. She knows what she wants and gets exactly what she wants out of the artists and musicians she works with, many of them who are some of the most accomplished in the industry. ♥👣 Some have referred to this as a rehearsal and I will be happy to be corrected by someone who Knows but I suspect this was no rehearsal but a scheduled performance with this performance being the purpose. KORK is the Norwegian National Orchestra known as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra & I don't believe I have heard this performed with this arrangement with these particular members in a live event. She did do a live performance of "Summertime" with the full Orchestra. Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe not just anybody has the ability to book them for just any event. I believe Angelina and her family has access to this National Orchestra because she was declared by Norway as a National Treasure shortly after winning Norway's Got Talent. I believe this booking was arranged for the purpose of this recording. It's on her Album. Thus the scheduled time slot. I'm guessing the arrangement was made ahead of time and each party was working with this. Angelina was informed the night before I believe and had the night and next day before the performance to make the changes. I believe she worked on it that evening but didn't quite finish it. She visited an amusement park on the day of and before the performance. I've watched video of her in an interview at the park with a friend. It looks like they had the whole park to themselves. She finished the lyrics on the ride to the recording session. The remarkable thing is that the lyrics fit so well they had no need to change the arrangement. I believe this performance was the second take. Again I will be happy to be corrected on this if I am wrong but regardless this performance was typical Angelina Magic. Ole, there is something else special about this orchestra. It is not the artists who book the orchestra, no, this orchestra chooses the soloists with whom they want to work. So it's a great honor for Angelina to work with them.
