It could be real due to Stockholm syndrome. "When a person develops emotions and feelings towards the person who kidnaps them. Changing their personality and many other possible things" it's a instinct to survive and some people's brains overwrite themselves to something that would produce mass results to survive. Like I said above. Developing feelings towards their abuser/kidnapper/stalker There is a anime based around Stockholm syndrome It's called future diary The main character gets it towards the main girl
