I love that he never actually counts to 3. It's like a secret tactic to make them think he's giving them 3 whole seconds to respond when he knows they're the ones who started the conflict. He just made them hesitate long enough so he could attack before he finished counting. It's cheesy, but it does make a lot of logical sense if you really think about it.

Tbh I love that while it's not completely realistic, it's far more realistic than a lot of fight scenes with multiple attackers on a single victim are. He's forced to address each attacker very fast, and alternate between more than a couple of attackers at the same time to keep them from dogpiling him all at once with brute force. That doesn't stop them from trying to force him onto the ground, coming at him from several angles at once, and it's really great how they show that you would have very rapidly, and decisively have to deal with them as quickly as they could recover and come at you again. I do also love how they all recover and keep attacking very quickly, or stay in the fight as opposed to get punched in the face once, then disappear for 15 seconds like a WWE fighter waiting politely to let the opponent put him in a piledriver for no reason, because it's not their turn to attack. Lastly I love how they address the fact that no matter how good your striking, and reflexes, a group of attackers will try to take you down or pin you against the wall, and will probably succeed even with a big size and strength difference like they did here. Reacher is bigger, taller, stronger, and more experienced and well trained than any of these guys, but they still manage to get him in some bad positions by muscling him with multiple bodies. Great fight choreography, does a fantastic job of showing that an absolute stud can address multiple attackers at once, but it is a huge challenge not matter how good you are at hand to hand combat.

Now that I’ve read a lot of the books and seen the series it’s hard to imaging anyone other than Alan Ritchson playing Reacher. Cruise did well which was to be expected from such an experienced actor but having read the books it’s easy to see why many of the fans were not happy with the casting. The first fight, in the cell, was just Reacher establishing that he shouldn't be f&@ked with. He went actually easy on the guy, just knocked him out, and he didn't hurt his friends because he knew he didn't need to. Here he knows he's fighting for his survival and these guys aren't going to be deterred, they need to be rendered incapable of attacking him. So he gouges eyes, breaks arms and legs, does whatever it takes to take them out. Just brutal and completely effective.

The highlights of the fight were smacking one of the prisoner's head on the wash basin, he never got up from that...gouging the eye out of another...and he went on to break his arm...the leader of the prisoner's being constantly elbowed in the face...the uppercut and finally breaking the ankle and knocking out the leader cold...brilliant, brutal and realistic fight scenes and it's this realism which is missing so much in other TV and movies. I can't see Tom Cruise coming back to the role of Jack Reacher....his time has passed!!

One psychological reason that he went on one instead of finishing the count is that he charged the guy is to either react to him saying two or three, reaction time is faster than proaction time. Because he went on one they were unprepared. The same trick is used in that shoot out movie where the guy says he doesn't need a ten count. Once he started saying know that gave the guy the reaction he needed to Quick draw and win because he had set his reaction to if he ever heard the articulation of the word no.

@@paull3278 Oh absolutely I agree... I mean that in the Cruise version he fights 5 average (and possibly drunk) young men, whilst in the Amazon version Reacher fights 5 hardened criminals who are jacked AF and have nothing to lose, so certainly a higher difficulty. In addition, the Cruise version gives them sore balls and broken noses, this version gives them concussions and fractured heads. In the books he pretty just punches them once and it kills them (that happened multiple times in the Reacher book I read)

Man never into this show or anything but I can respect a good fight scene with maximum carnage when I see it. It's Hollywood but it's also got grittiness to it - and I'm all for blood spills - I also like when the "hero" isn't afraid to eye gouge one of his enemies or break legs - if you're in that situation you're doing maximum damage.

Thing I love about this fight, and the one before it, is that Reacher doesn't kill the men. He knows that he and the accountant aren't where they are supposed to be. Killing inmates would lead to a huge headache for him. But he also makes damn sure that those guys know they just got their asses whooped!

  • @kkrummelrhs

I don't the fight was showcasing Reacher thinking with a "they're trying to kill me but I'm not trying to kill them" mindset. The guy with the shiv who got his skull smashed into the sink never got up after. If Reacher had time to get a full slam of his head, that would've killed him. It was a be killed or potentially kill for Reacher here.
