    A few good tips, don't put electric cables in the ceiling here in Bulgaria, they get eating by mink/marten/rats, get your electricity meter put directly on the electricity pole out by the road, cost around 200 leva but may vary in price from village to village and also get your water meter moved out there in a water meter well, dig a new trench for the new water main then you also get a completely new water supply into your house from the start, do those 2 things and you are free to have meter people come running every month and read, i'm from Denmark and have been her for 11 years, good luck with it all and Greetings from Karavelovo.

    The clink or as we call it - slag, was in use in old houses like this for just insulating the floor. Don't know if it works better than modern ways of insulationg, but is worth leaving it underneath! Regarding the plugs - I'd plan European type at least one of them in a room. Guess you you'd buy electronics from local stores too. And frankly, I love those little switches at plugs, so convenient. Good progress!

    I think the material under your floorboards is slag, not clinker. It's used for soundproofing. Clinker is grey. Portland cement is made of ground clinker mixed with small amount of gypsum (plaster of paris) to initiate curing.

    Lucky you to have an electrician in the family! When I purchased my grandparents' (nearly derelict) home from my uncles who neglected it, my uncle from the opposite side of the family brought over his neighbor who's a master electrician, and in 3 days, they totally rewired the house (4 floors). It would have cost me a fortune if I hadn't had the "friends and family discount! The girls are so sweet (I notice they love to imitate mom at every turn). What an exciting adventure.

    Those old rural houses have weak wire system, in the past they were using a few appliances. It is a good thing to be updated, because if it gets overloaded it may cause fire.

    @Baku_Bulgaria_Bucharest... how long ago was that? With todays copper prices, you are looking at 4000 lev in materials alone with cable being your biggest expenditure. Then labour would be 2 people for 14 days for a 4 room property, so even at 100 lev per day (which is more typical for trades men who run a vehicle ) you would be looking at 2800 labour. 6800 lev total. Remember, minimum wage is now 50 lev per day and that's for labourers not tradesmen. A tradesman with the expenditure of a commercial vehicle requiring two MOT tests per year is 100 lev per day.

    It was over two years ago and you're right, prices have gone up a lot. Our house is small too, which helps. Crazy inflation in BG right now but we are lucky in our village tradespeople. They charge what they are worth for sure, but they don't over charge. I think our concrete patio was 5000 lev with a master and two labourers working on it.

    Interesting video to watch. Aren't there local regulations about electrics and using a UK plug socket? I thought the UK was weird in Europe in that we have ring circuits. Or is it a case of it being 100x better than what was there before?

    Are you sure you’re not breaking the law by installing the English system? Any house insurance would be invalidated if you have a claim. European electric systems are safer than UK. Say that with experience as my husband was an electrician in France. Be careful.

  • @the_phoenixproject

    @the_phoenixproject

    Yes it's all above board don't worry! Also, the EU system is not as safe as the UK system. There is no ground in the EU system here which makes everything very dangerous compared to the UK system. Thankfully we have Anthony's Dad who is a very experienced electrician!

    @@the_phoenixproject Hi! You're probably referring to your house but we do have ground in Bulgaria, thing is we started adding it in the near past so older systems don't have it and you have to change the whole system - at least that's the case for the older apartment blocks from the 70-80s. My apartment even has RCD after the renovation so it depends on the particular house/apartment's situation.

  • @BeerRepublic

    @BeerRepublic

    Both systems are equally safe. In radial circuits you use wires with bigger diameter in ring circuits longer wires. Regarding plugs I would argue British system is much better than the European one. I was electrocuted as a kid by putting a screwdriver in a hole of EU socket something you cannot do in UK style socket. UK plugs are fused EU plugs are not.

  • @Warnz60

    @Warnz60

    2 ай бұрын

    @@BeerRepublic The fuses in Brit plugs are to protect the appliance and it’s flex, hence the ability to plug a 5 Amp lamp into a 32 Amp ring main. Fuses in plugs are not there for your safety, breakers are.

    @@the_phoenixproject That isn’t correct as you are supposed to supply your own earth via an earth spike. It’s normal in older European properties.
