Re-Sewing My Old Costume + making an early Victorian BUSTLE
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
When I discovered my old romantic era 1840s costume no longer fit I decided to take it apart and fix it! And while I was at it, I sewed a 1830s bustle to go with the dress. For the bustle, I followed a tutorial by American Duchess (linked below).

Redoing dresses is how we did it up until the end of the 19th century. Glad to see it.
I’m loving learning that cording can be much simpler than I thought
Really nice seeing you tackle this project! Reworking old projects can be an interesting challenge 🤍
I sew, but mostly I watch sewing videos as entertainment. I want to say I really enjoy the pacing of your content. As this is a genre that I enjoy I have seen many new youtubers recently pop up with videos, and you are by far my favorite. Thanks for the content.

Wow thank you so much! I'm glad people appreciate details like that
Beautiful reworking of dress. Ancestors would be proud!

Thank you!
Using the tape for the cartridge pleats is genius!!! Loved this video so much 😊
What a great remake! I don’t care if that fabric isn’t HA, I love it!

I think it’s close enough to HA!
I refit this all the time. So much thrifting. I love these tiny tiny cartridge pleats. Those are stunning. I think the print is fantastic! I do wanna wave my arms around in all directions. Great job! So so pretty!
Oo love that tape wow that could seriously be a game changer! Love it!
This is a great video. How hard it is to finish a project when the event is cancelled. I find unpicking an arduous task too. You certainly made all your time and effort worth while. The dress looks lovely on you. Thanks for sharing. ❤️ Lynne
Piecing and reworking are always historically accurate, so no shame there!
Yeah, I'm remaking an 1860s dress (actually the first 19th century dress that I made, and only the 2nd dress of any era that I made) from years ago, that no longer fits, too! It started out as a darted, fitted bodice with plain gathered skirt on a waistband, and I'm going to re-fit the bodice and either add a panel of matching fabric (I only have about 1/2 yard left) to make the bodice into a gathered-front bodice, or restyle it to look like a bolero jacket over a contrasting false bodice.

Oooh sound fun! You're lucky you still have leftover fabric, even if it's just a little bit. My first costume (which I never actually finished) was 1860s, need to revisit that era someday...
I've actually got an 1840's fan-front dress I made 5 years ago, and it's on my list to re-fit this year!

Nice! I feel like the 1840s doesn't get as much love as it should in the costuming world.

The 1840’s is one decade I just keep returning to in my costuming, for some reason I just love this era! I’m always super excited when I see other people doing 1840’s too!
That before & after at 17:15 🤩 Wow! What a beautiful refashion!

This was such an inspirational video! I have a few dresses that need to be remade. I need Tiger Tape in my life! Love the xylophone accompaniment. :)

Thank you! Literally the only time I use that tiger tape is for cartridge pleating but boy, is it handy when I need it. I'll send the wee-one you compliments ;)
I know it's not a period print, but it's pretty damn close. Yes, more delicate flowers were more common, but there's a fragment of red on white(ish) block printed fabric in the v&a that has heavier flowers, similar to the way they're done on yours.
Yay for busy fabric! 🙂
Well. I love the rose bud print. I am about to make a similar design/era dress, which is why I am here

Thanks, glad other people like it, too. Good luck on your project!
Hecka cute!!
I am actually working up to harvesting the fabric from an old Italian set that I haven't worn in literally a decade (I last wore it when I was three months along with my 9.5 yo), and re-purposing it into a floofy late Victorian skirt - 3 panels each at about 60" long is a heck of a lot of beautiful black as well as yellow cotton jacquard. Hufflepuff vibes, anyone?

Floofy +hufflepuff = win! Sounds like it'll be amazing when you're finished
I would love to be able to sew like you!!! This is gorgeous
This is super helpful since I'm hoping to make a dress like this soon!
I have this exact dress in red with al three of its sleeves. And it's too small in the arms and torso. I have dreaded altering it because of the three sets on sleeves. I still have extra fabric too. Seeing you remake it makes me think there is promise for my dress!

Breaking news! You inspired me to try it on again and it fits! I regret it being a back closure cause my old dad could barely hook the back.
I love it! 1840s are my favourite from the more modern part of fashion history. Suits you so well, it's beautiful!
Pretty & useful. 🌸
I really like the dress
I mean come on. Such work goes into your projects. I remade my Cinderella Gown almost every year since making it.

I'm the kind of person who loathes doing alterations/fixes after a garment is done. I just want to move on to the next project but I have to admit, sometimes it's worth doing. I bet your cinderella gown looks amazing tho!

@@DixieDIY wahah thank you. Its my favorite gown to wear even just around the house. I had to make alterations cause food is my weakness. Thank you 😁
Love the dress. I'm really glad you mentioned that the arms won't go over your head. I would have thought I made it wrong. Today, we gripe about the lack of pockets, they couldn't raise their arms! I guess some progress has been made. What is the correct fabric for this gown? I thought quilting cotton would have been correct.
@DixieDIY

Thanks! The solid rose print isn't really accurate. Their florals would be more detailed and not silhouetted shapes. And while quilting cotton would work, I think my base fabric isn't a very good quality as it's not very smooth or finely woven.
I just came across this video while looking at others of the same subject. I have a smocking pleater that would make short work of the skirt pleating.

I really need to make/buy some kind of pleater. It would make my life so much easier lol!

@@DixieDIY You're welcome! ^^
Thank you for this and your other videos! I learn a ton from them. I was wondering what the verdict was on the piping foot--did you end up liking it? I usually just use my zipper foot, but I learned that my hidden-zipper foot is really helpful!
@DixieDIY

I did like it but I think a good zipper foot is probably more versatile. But I don't see any reason *not* to get a piping food?
Good stuff
There's a lot of song and dance about "historically accurate," but "historically appropriate" is a much more realistic goal. That's what women have always done since the dawn of time -- aimed for the "latest fashion" knowing it was an impossible mark, but still they gave it their best shot within the constraints of what they had on hand, including money.
Love the video
I sew with a wide stitch on the machine now because I expect to have to unpick it at some point in the future now. 😅
Cartridge pleating 120 inches?!!! Sorry, homey don't play dat! 🙂

Hahahaha! It was surprisingly quick, probably because I've had so much practise by now
Did you have any issues with setting in the sleeves with the added side panels?
Seam rippers get dull???
