I have been thinking about this a lot, but does any one think that Wolfgang Peterson should do a George Lucas and remaster The Never Ending Story with improved effects, like some of the the back ground matte paintings and blue screen stuff? Obviously not as extreme as what George done ( eg, Gmork pounced first) , but enough to improve it a bit visually

Khyathtu Fell Yes, Wolfgang Peterson said him self in this documentary that there wasn't enough fantasian inhabitants in the Ivory Tower scene due to technical limitations at the time. I think just some of the back ground shots, flying scenes, etc, would be great as the rest of the movie looks great as it is

Absolutely not. It would devalue the immense efforts made and the true art that it was. I mean, should we digitally modify classic paintings to make them more "realistic"? No! Because it would be blasphemous. Why should the art of filmmaking be treated any differently?

Wil Mees I am not talking about replacing the puppets and practical effects, but just the back grounds, flying scenes, etc. They look bad and I am pretty sure not much effort was done to make those matte paintings and other back grounds, which were most likely photo graphs printed on a huge back ground set piece

The first time I let my daughters watched this I had the biggest epiphany. The look on their faces and the emotion that came through was the same look I must have had on my face and in that moment I was my parents looking at myself as I looked at my daughters. There was no time there was only everything all at once. A never ending moment where every thought,dream,action could be.

The Neverending Story Part 1 movie ending was perfect!! I was a 12 year old boy when I first seen it and of course at the time had bullys messing with me at my school in New York City. To see the bullys get trashed literally made me feel great! I remember jumping around at that part yelling "ya muthafu**as take that!!" I am a 41 year old retired marine 6'4" 240 lbs with kids now and I was over the moon happy to see my kids have the same reaction as me at 12 years of age. I truly love this movie!!!!!

Yes, it's understandable that a writer can get emotional about changes to his book to adapt it to film, but I loved that scene as a kid as well. That felt like justice to a bullied kid. Plus once we'd seen Falkor, we all wanted to ride on his back, so to have Bastian do just that at the end of the movie AND get revenge on his bullies on top of that, it's just so satisfying.

Something about this movie truly transported me to another world. Over the years since, I often compared movies to this one. Why don't they feel as real? Why did NS scare me so? Why does it have an amazing feeling to it? I realize it is partly because they didn't have CGI back then. This movie is magic because of that imo. The beauty of the 80s is encapsulated within this timeless gem.

An amazing masterpiece. This is when movie making was movie making. One of 2 masterpieces. The other of course was The Dark Crystal.Witch took 5 years to make. Jim Henson at his best....

I grew up in a nightmare and this was not only my escape but my hope. It still holds number one in my heart.

The Neverending Story will always be one of my most favorite childhood movies I have ever seen. It still gets me to this day and I’m 40. Still love it. No CGI, and still more real than some CGI movies today. I would love to see a reboot using today’s technology, but would it be as good as the original? That’s a good question.

Artax drowning in the swamps of sadness still makes me cry so hard. I will never get over that.

At 49 years old this film reminded me to fight the darkness and live my dreams. The soundtrack is great too!

Too bad that the boys who portrayed Bastian and Atreyu did not participate in this documentary.

Life is hard as a once-child famous actor. The actor who played Bastion got tired of the constant attention and was an introverted type of guy, so he withdrew from the public light. The actor who played Atreyu became a barman.

This movie is on par with lord of the rings and starwars definitely one of the best fantasy movies ever made

This movie is so magical and memorable. I can’t believe how much work went into making it. One of my childhood favorites!

This is an epic. Moonchild is still cute. In the story there is this wonderful moment that I wish had made it into the film, where he wishes for the moment to last forever, and it does. Its so beautiful.

In my Top three, if not number one (pure nostalgic value) movie ever. Absolute classic. I think it really portrays that pre- internet, pre- cgi productions of yesteryear. 80's. Perfect 80's.

CanadianMaster1 oh god no ! I'm sorry I should clarify. This first movie is in my top three. Haha I've never seen the third. I've been warned! I do find the 2nd one slightly better then most people do though.

This movie holds up so well, just rewatched it on netflix and i was blown away. I never realized how deep it was when i was a kid.

The horse scene killed me as a kid and it still makes me cry.

I'll admit, I saw the Movie first, which inspired me to read the Book, which really IS a Neverending story, it doesn't just stop where this movie ends. Truly IS a magical movie, it was produced at a time when the incredible digital effects we have today were not created yet, so they really had to think how to tell the story with what they had available at the time. The Actors really fit their roles, and told the story with strong emotions, and really dragged you into the tale. What a great movie, and for a while the Title score was my theme song for Life.

randallintx I saw the movie before the book too. My auntie got me the VHS around 1989, but I didn't see it till around 92 . I then saw the book at the book section in John Lewis's I think and the book really draws me in. I also liked the second movie as a kid, despite what people say about it. I have rewatched the second film as an adult and can see the flaws, but still think it has its good moments. The third film is just a disaster What did you think of the second and third films?

If it weren't for the movie I might never have known about the book. It's funny how,as kids we never really paid attention to the true meaning of the story but as adults we can look back on it and see it in a totally different way.

This movie is a masterpiece.

Honor, care, empathy, entegrity, adventure, Hope, honesty, heart..... We saw GOOD overcome EVIL. That right there is the rare thing today.

The Neverending Story and Dark Crystal are in my opinion as far as film are staples for the Fantasy genre.

when i went to see this in the theater for the 30th anniversary they showed this documentary before the movie started so it was great to see how each scene was filmed and brought to life. obviously being an equestrian myself seeing how the Welsh Pony was trained and the swamps of sadness was filmed was awesome!!

I think this and Das Boot are the best German films ever made. Most of the people working on those two movies where the same, especially Doldinger with his amazing, amazing soundtracks. What a genius!

The movie would not have been what it was without the perfect casting of the three leads, and the stellar performances they delivered. They were all empowered, but vulnerable as well. It pleases me that while none of them remained actors, they didn't have any of the issues child stars often do. It saddens me that Michael Ende never came to appreciate this magical film that he helped give birth to for what it was.

I absolutely love this book. It’s full of magic and wisdom. Michael Ende created something really unique end everytime I read the book it really touches me. I know that it may be a nice movie if you see it on its own, without a book. But to see it after having read the book…it just breaks my heart and I can feel Michael Endes heart break as well. I don’t mind scenes getting cut off or bad cgi or anything like that but this film didn’t understand at all the spirit and meaning of this book. Every scene I see captures a completely different feeling than the book was trying to give. I feel like the directors didn’t even read the book much less understand it. If they say, it wasn’t possible to realise the fantasy in a film, that’s just not true, they just had a lack of creativity. There are puppet shows that convey the story much more closely. I am really sorry for all those poor people that saw this film bevor reading the book. You’ve been disseized of something really magical and beautiful.

While I will always have a lot of childhood sentiment attached to the film, I completely agree that it misses the mark as to the deeper meaning(s) of the novel. It also lacks the meta elements of the book (an example being that Bastian hears the Old Man of Wandering Mountain recite some passages that we readers have literally read in the opening chapter), which Ende clearly added to get the reader more involved in the story (as the book-within-the-book did with Bastian). And of course, Bastian chasing his bullies on Falkor's back is the worst possible substitute for the entire second half of the novel, which conveys the importance of the balance between, and symbiosis of, fantasy and reality.

So wonderful, the whole team is incredible, much respect and admiration! I love watching these documentaries, after watching The Dark Cristal series on Netflix the fever is back again, I wanna watch all behind the scenes, buy all books, collectibles, lol! This is one of the most important films in my life, I still love it! You can tell Wolfgang is such a sweet soul and that is definitely imprinted in the movie

I remember the first time I saw the "Swamp of Sadness" scene when Artax, the horse, was sinking and Noah and Barrett were crying. I wanted to reach out to the screen and take them both into my arms to comfort them. I still get a huge lump in my throat when I see that scene.

This was one of my all time favorite films as a kid I loved it soooo much 💗and TBH still do ,the whole movie was perfect in everyway possible and still is Al these years later and when was kid remember having crush on atrayu 💗lol great big thumbs up to everyone involved in this fantastic film I say they should be all very proud of their selves and all there hard work payed off 😍💛👍

This movie had a huge impact on me at the age of 6 and is definitely my favorite childhood movie.

This shows why you cant make documentaries with many modern CGI-movies. "So, here you can see a bunch of people sitting at PCs" . Practical Effects will alway beat CGI. We, as humans can "feel" it. I wished Barret Oliver and Noah Hathaway would also have been interviewed like Tami Stronach. I always had a crush for the latter, when watching the movie I was the same age. By the way, if the Documentary is from 2014, she must have been 42 at the time of filming. Incredible, she looks better than most woman in her twenties. A natural beauty indeed and her acting as childlike empress was really perfect.

This movie is Classic. When that horse died i was devastated. I can watch this movie 10 times in a row

I did indeed. Of course I was hooked on a feeling (pun intended) that the sequel would be a great one, and as a child, and as a child who had yet to read the novel, I accepted the sequel as an okay movie. I enjoyed it enough to give it a few viewings as a child, but have never seen it in it's entirety as an adult and as an adult who has read the novel.

Allen Ray I still think the second movie is an okay movie if you don't think about the book. Has some big flaws like the bad humour, the very childish elements that, even though it is a kids movie, as is the first one... has a dark under tone and the 6 year old age group humour doesn't fit in. The plot was jarring in places too. The first film is more of a family film, but for some reason, they made the sequel dumbed down and with no real plot points. Some dull parts, but it was at least okay in parts and nice visually. I to this day don't under stand why they changed the appearance of Atreyu from how he was in the first one to a more American Indian looking type with darker skin and different clothes. Recast or not, but they could have kept the appearance The third film was just atrocious. It took a completely different direction from the first two movies, changing the appearance of creature characters and changing the genre from a serious family fantasy to a young kids comedy / fantasy. Jack Black was the only good thing about that movie and even he is too embarrassed to talk about it these days directors apparently

@@jonathanspencer5884 Not sure what this has to do with the OP. But while I heard this is technically the case too most people are talking about kids born in the 90's to this millennium. But there is indeed a huge difference between people born in the late 70's and the early 80's. I know because I was born in 79. The kids 3-5 years later were soft asf. And now they're raising kids... God help us.

I am not like most other people born in the early 1980's , I think that is probably why I got shunned at school . I was different , but also extremely shy . That is interesting that early 80's kids were softer than the late 70's kids , I wonder what changed between the two era's. I sure wish it was still that period now though . I absolutely hate the current societies culture . By the way , I am the original uploader of this video . @@jonathanspencer5884 Hard to say. The Baby Boomers were soft asf too... the hippies of the 60's. Their parents, the ones who fought in WWII had it rough and created better times. Unfortunately I think those better times soften people. The US economy was in bad shape in the 70's to about 81. Even if a kid from the late 70's was too young to know what was going on they still lived through it and absorbed it to some regard. Then the economy boomed like crazy within a short span. And really has been strong since for the most part. Social media has really contributed yeah. But more than that parents who can't even discipline their own children anymore from fear of having social services called on them. Liberal policies have softened our society. When I was in elementary school the principal could beat you with a paddle. They did away with that a few years later. Now these kids can walk all over you. Yep, 82-84 seems about right for this millennial group. Especially 84 on.

The film was awesome because today you can tell there was zero CGI and thus, the effects were so much better by building real sets - when you see Noah Hathaway going between the giant Sphinx you realize those are real 60 foot tall sculptures.

Watched this yesterday and enjoyed. Tami looked amazing, and still is tbh. I think it would now be 34 years since. So hard to believe.

I saw this movie 1989 the first time, and couldn't get enough of it back then.. Back then was such a great time, as the Wall (Germany) fell.. And to be honest, I did not only emphasise with Bastian and Atreu, but also could not get enough of the Childlike Empress.. You could dive into those beautiful big eyes of hers.. A beautiful girl back then, and a beautiful woman today.. I hope the whole cast of this movie is well, and found their way..

Thank you so much for sharing this amazing documentary. This movie is one of my favorites. I love the soundtrack too.

I remember watching this movie as a child and it's still fascinates me how they did it and it still brings back memories of where I was in my life and so thankful for the people that put this movie together I'm a 58 year old kid that still has quite a vivid imagination so it gives me hope to still be everything that I can be to accomplish things that I have not accomplished yet

30 years??? I just watched this movie on 7th May 2022, and what I thought my son with this movie is amazing!!! watch it now you are 40 and more, amazing!!!

This movie is 100x better than todays efforts because it dealt with intense issues like sadness, fear, terror, courage, loneliness and more. Movies these days are not bold or brave enough to take us on a Journey that tests our every emotion and awakens our every sense before giving us a finale of hope and triumph.

Wow, such a great movie. I don't think they can do such things today when everything is CGI. There's a reason why Jurassic Park was filmed with animatronics for some scenes - you can feel the difference in the emotional connection between the characters and the creatures. But Tami was really great in this movie. A fantastic movie.

wish they would have had interviews with bastion n atreyu for this?

I don't think you could get Barret Oliver in any interview for any amount of money... unless it was about photography. He left acting totally without an explanation and is a very private person now.

Yep and i think Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) Left on bad terms with them. He was banned from the premier due to suing the company the same year. The reason why was because he was paid only for 3 months worth of work when they filmed for an additional 10 months. He was told that if he didn't drop the charges, which he didn't that he'd be disallowed to attend it.

This came out when i was 5 and EVERYONE, including the teachers, were raving on about it at school all that year. We used to rollplay it at recess, i used to WISH i was the childlike empress (fyi she's from Iran, so cool) and marry Atreyu🤣. Seriously its bloody captivating. My favourite scene is when Atreyu firsts visits the Ivory tower. Just look at the coatumes in that scene. AMAZING. The other scene is the last one, where the bullies see him and run away. I just love it. The music, especially the scene where Atreyu runs past the sphinx, is really what makes this movie sensational. It will forever be my favourite childhood movie besides the Dark Crystal

For me, the greatest thing about this movie was always the Ivory tower theme.. I still get goosebumps whenever i hear it. And of course Falcor.. God how i wanted a Falcor when i grew up (still do of course)

peter obermuller Yes it was a shame the sound track put a different synthezized version on there, with that those aw ful synthezized drum s And the German version of t he movie had an entirely different score al together for the Ivory tower

The concept behind the movie is incredible.

Really cool video! Loved this movie so much as a kid and still do. For many years I had a golden retriever called Falkor, so the "flying dog" thing lived on. LOL

Now I understand why they won’t remake this because it will not have great Inspiration as this one ☝️

The first time I saw this movie, I was about 5 or 6 years old and living in an orphanage, having just lost my mother. To say this movie moved us as kids is an understatement. I don't think any eyes went to bed dry that night.

Wolfgang Petersen has to hear this! In1983 a hard fight started between the producer Bernd Eichinger and Michael Ende. The author lost. So the movie could be showed to the audience! Nowadays the courts are more on the the author's side, I think. But Mister Ende stressed the courts in Germany to many times. Thedrew4you this statement moves us all! Michael Ende (he isn't alive) would stop fighting the 84 movie, I think!

@@JustPassingThrough27 Michael Ende's fight against the 84 movie and the financial burden for the Bavaria, the production company avoid a sequel short after the first. Some years later Ende wasn't so angry yet about the plot, but he dislikes it...
