Re-foaming a 15" Cerwin Vega with 10Hz Test Tone

Sometimes you just don't want to cut out the original dust cap off your woofer to re-foam it. You also don't want to end up with coil rub due to the voice coil not being centered properly so what do you do? Run a 10Hz test tone to the woofer when setting the foam surround to the basket.

I've just recently found your channel and purchased my first pair of Vegas. About 2 weeks after bringing my very used but very functional LS-12's home, they were attacked by a visitor's child when I was not home. I have one dust cap that needs replaced which I will likely find details on in your videos... I also have 2 midrange drivers that the center cone has been shoved in by a little finger. These drivers no longer seem to function, and I have yet to be able to find replacements. If you have any suggestions as to what I can do or a suitable replacement, I would certainly appreciate it. Love your videos. Keep saving Vega's. I've been in love with them since my brother bought a set new back in the early 90's

I find most of mine locally on Facebook Market Place and other local buy and sell sites. I also frequently shop around at pawn shops and second hand stores. Most of their speakers especially the larger 15 inch models are heavy and cost lots to ship, also the risk of damaged during shipping makes it not worth it.

I can't understand why VEGA don't make them in rubber, i got tired of getting my done every 5 years.Around year 4 the color starts to fade on the Vegas i had.Replaced them with MTX rubber surround. I Had 4 vs 150 and 2 vs 120.

The type of material used for the surround on a woofer plays a big role in its T/S parameters. CV used foam because it is lightweight and allows the cone structure to move with very little resistance. The foam is one of a few reasons their woofers have a very quick transient response. Most rubber I assume would have a negative impact on the woofer.

@@ronkali5365 Rubber is fine for subwoofers and for normal speakers. But the foam is superior when it comes to those transients.. Check out one of the worlds most expensive speakers, they use foam just because of that rapid moves. Magico.

Jesus he didn't even spacer the coil lol. I guess when they sound like shit new no need to worry about cone placement lol.

If you center them good no need to. You go by feel after and adjust while glue still wet. I just did mine and all is good. Thank God.

This is correct PageCrowes. I uploaded a video a while ago on the importance of shimming the voice coil, this is however mostly for people who don't have a ton if experience working with woofers. I have refoamed and reconed many, many woofers and midrange drivers before so I am very confident in my ability to center them properly without the use of shims. I also have ways of checking them as the glues sets to confirm they are set right. This of course depends on the driver I am working with because the voice coil gap varies from one to the other. I see it as a benefit doing it this way by not removing dust cap and having the possibility of foren debris making its way into the gap. When people make negative comments like darrelldarrell1447 here I can only assume they have little experience doing this or knowledge of the actual quality of some CV woofers. All good though, each to their own, sometimes people feel they need to post comments as such to make them feel better about themselves. Makes me wonder why he was watching this video in the first place 🤔
