Make sure to prime the engine with oil before starting. Unplug the coil packs and pull the fuel pump relay. Triple check by hand before doing so. This is just an example of what to look for. Please check with your factory manuals for additional info.

It is really a great practical video on the youtube. It is much better than the book even I have read many times. I have done my timing successfully following your advice.
Nice video. I just finished this job today. You can also rent the tools online too. I got mine for $75 + shipping for 30 days. I had to do my Vanos timing twice because I got the P0034 and 34 vanos camshaft control OBD codes after first try.
You may have to cycle it back and forth a few times to remove residual oil in the vanos. Then hold it counter clockwise with the special tool and check for continuity.
thanks for taking the time. much appreciated!
Finally got my tools I'm trying to do my van is this weekend good luck to me
this was a great help to me... i would like to mention however @
Thxs for vid wish u did the seals also since that's common with this job and had a before and after sound reference to help diagnose the difference between guides or seals
Really good detailed explanation thankyou so much for your time !!!!
I re-checked the timing. I matched the crank pulley OT to timing cover OT mark. Checked piston 1 was TDC, locked the cams. The intake cams are easy to set but the exhaust cams aren't easy to move, I have to move the crank pulley a bit to set the cam locks on. I've used the inspection hole in the timing cover to match the metal plates on the VANOS units. And still its giving me issues
I took care of it, thank you so much for your help
@claudianieves9 The only way I have checked the actuation of the vanos was thru a scan tool. Usual requirements was an engine up to operating temp and idling. When activated it would cause the idle to become rough. Outside of that, I'm not positive that you can supply your own power and ground to check it. Ill research more and get back to you.
If you haven't already then you should reset the learned adaptation for the vanos. If this motor has been running with worn components then the computer will automatically adjust over time. Try that first then if that doesn't work then try looking at my response video at the bottom. Thanks for wwatching
I just replaced my VANOS seals inside the unit, also replaced the chain, tensioners, and guides.. With the entire VANOS tool set, cams locked A-E up, and all. Still having a P1519 code.
Thank you very much. your video explained it well
good explanation dusting thanks
Totally normal. When you have the cams in place and adjusted they rest on the end stop which is all the way counter clock wise. When you remove the lock down plates they will move due to the valve springs pushing them into a rest position. Make sure to check my other video for a final assembly tip. Thanks for watching
Dustin,Great Information! Thanks. I have just finished the same job on my 03 E39 M62 I found plenty of info on performing the job but for the life of me I cant find reassembly torque specs anywhere. so for now im reassembled but am stopped due to this. ie. timing cover, oil pan,oil feeders over the cams, ect Torque specs. Thanks in advance!
@wmmathis Yes these rails end up breaking apart and falling into the oil pan. Best to replace all of them and the chain while you have it apart. Good luck Bud

after you remove the plate for the camshaft position sensor in front of the vanos, how you know in which position to put it back in?
