RCA SelectaVision SGT400 Video Disc Player Demo - 1984

Ғылым және технология

Time to get deep into the electronic archives. Here is the RCA SelectaVision SGT400 video disc player. No, this is not a laser disc player. This is a needle based record reading video technology that lasted a couple years in the very early 1980’s, and it competed with VHS in the early days. But you can’t record on it. Picture quality rivals VHS, but it has some drawbacks especially after 40 years.
I acquired this unit about 25 years ago, I put a brand new needle in it (do a search and you’ll find some fan groups - (www.cedmagic.com), and tonight I lubricated and restored all the rubber parts. It’s very touchy but once it gets playing it is fine. Even 25 years ago it did not work great. This player is in good shape.
The plastic housing cases hold a disc which resembles much like a vinyl record. The grooves are much more fine than you would find on a regular LP.
This particular unit was their flagship model, there were only a few models I believe between 1980 and 1984. This one allows you to fast forward and rewind while it’s playing, and you can program different chapters and tracks.
Sorry that my videos are not the most professional, my kids are screaming in the background and you’ll see the lights reflecting off of my TV. Enjoy, this is an oddity!

I have a bunch of movies but no player, I love this too bad it didn't catch on I'm also fascinated by how in the 80s computers used cassette tapes to store data for games and other programs

I think that unit is the high-end unit that belongs to RCA's "Dimensia" line. It was actually cancelled right before it came out but you can still find NOS units.

The SKT-400 and SJT-400 were of RCA's regular line, though those models were the top of the line featuring advanced random access capabilities for CED. That said, the 400 series machines will work with the Dimensia SystemLink interface. The planned Dimensia CED player was the SKT-425. A prototype was made of this model, but it never made it into production.

I had one of these as a kid but never knew what it was called. Everyone thought I was crazy trying to explain it. 😅

They could’ve done this to DVDs and Blu-Rays but with smaller caddies

It would actually be in DVD quality originally but due to age the disk is distorted and they play head is blunt and is why it looks bad.

I think quality is actually supposed to be on par with VHS.

Can you tell me how you have your player connected to your tv? Do you use an adapter? I have a player and am not having luck getting a picture. It seems to load and spin ok but I am not seeing an image!

You should be able to take the video out from the CED player, connected directly to a television that has video in. This is called a composite connection - the video should pass, and then also the audio if you connect the corresponding left and right, Jack’s. This does have an RF channel 3 output, you would need to have an older television to make this work.

@@davismv thanks for the speedy reply! All I have on the back of the RCA Selectavision is a channel 3/4 switch and a coax out and coax in connection. It’s not like the rca cable connections I am used to on an old vcr or anything!
