RC Hydroplane Turn Fin Brackets | A Better Way (The M5 Way!)

Спорт

This video is all about turn fin mounting brackets for your radio controlled model hydroplane project. Specifically, we discuss the how and why of proper bracket construction and as usual, do a little drillin' and millin' along the way!

I've learned from the big boats, the GRAIN of the 7075-T651 is very important. The mill grain in the verticle access makes the fin stiffer.

If you use an erasable fine point gel pen you would not only be able to correct your drawings and redraw but they will be more visible to the camera.

When mounting a curved turnfin would I mount the bracket at the 12° or 90°

  • @M5PerfHydros

I'm not a fan of curved turn fins, but when they are used I usually see them mounted near 90°

According to club rules the turn fin is supposed to have a “break away” (more accurately a “fold up”) capability in case of an accident where it won’t destroy another boat as badly. How is this accomplished, particularly if support struts, cotter pins, or doubling the screws up are part of the rigidity solution?

  • @M5PerfHydros

It's a consideration. The support strut should fold up pretty easily, methinks. I've been including a second, tiny brass locating screw also, same as used for a breakaway pin on the rudder. Both of these items will increase the potential for damage at least a little bit, so it's best to stay out of my way!

So you are going to leave the inner chamfer on the bracket instead of milling it out? That's one of the issues I have with the Mojo turn fin mount, I can't move the turn fin as far forward as I would like to due to the chamfer. He also did a 3 bolt attachment point to the sponson with no adjustability for angle. Is that normal for a curved turn fin? My only experience previous to this was with the UL-1 and the UL-19 which both have angle adjustability and the UL-1 comes with a curved turn fin.

Oh and the other issue with mounting the fin on the outside is drag when the water rides up the inside of the turn fin on it's way to the rooster tail, it hits the bracket and gets all disrupted.

Check out the short video I just posted to answer your first question. As to your second point, YES the bracket will terribly disrupt the water as it rides up the inside of the fin if the bracket is inboard of the fin! I'm so anal about this that I use a button head screw to attach the fin so I don't have a big bolt head in the water path

@@M5PerfHydros If the deck hangs over the turn fin and the water hits the deck on it's way out I imagine that would cause an issue too. The sport 20 hydro I'm building now has a bit more overhang on the deck then I like so I will probably trim that back to make sure there's no interference there. As for the chamfer, the Mojo uses 2 screws and the pivot screw is close to the corner of the fin so I don't have much option to trim it back for clearance like you did on yours. So being inspired by your videos I did something I didn't want to do...I used my Dremel and files to remove the chamfer on the inside of the bracket. I don't think a sport 20 hydro is going to need all that added strength on an already very thick bracket. I'm not as accurate as I would like to be using hand tools like files and I don't have access to a mill (apartment living :( ) so I didn't want to do it. But I finally committed and did it. I figured since I had 2 brackets anyway I could try it on one. So far it is coming out fairly acceptable. I planned on using a button head screw on the inside as well :)

You'll be fine. The material I normally use, even on my gas hydro, has a much smaller radius and it still holds well enough
