RC Hobby Workbench Ideas - Get Into RC | RC Driver

When it comes to spaces for working on RC car, we’ve seen it all! We’ve seen racers using ironing boards as workbenches at the track. We’ve seen newbies working on the floor in their bedroom. We’ve seen dirty cars being worked on, on kitchen tables. And of course, some really high end workbench set-ups. In this Get Into RC video, we’re going to show you some solutions for workbenches. We have three ideas that will hopefully make your next wrench session a little easier and make your RC hobby more enjoyable. Greg will show you basic budget set-up, a great bench you can buy and he also walks you through how he built the workbench in the RC Driver workshop. Ready to take your RC workspace to the next level? This video will help!

Great workspace. Another consideration is a lip around the work surface to keep tiny washers and bearings from rolling off the work surface. I used 1/2 rubber weatherstripping instead of a metal angle to keep from cutting into my forearm. It saved me from crawling around on the floor looking when my sleeve wiped parts to their doom.

Really enjoy your work. Now the other part😆 You implied it, but I feel it's important to make clear, especially for the new or returning to RC type. A bench, even a card table, means you can leave everything in one place until you are done. Enjoyment of the hobby goes way up when you can do this. Thanks again for all the information and help you've given to me and many others.

Great job there Greg. At the current time and space I love those portable fold-out tables. They fit in back of the truck/car and go where I run my RC's. I have several and the wider ones as well. I actually stack one on top of the other so large components go on top etc. Then I use a LED light and attach it to the underside of the the top table to shine down on the lower table. I also grabbed a 2' magnetic bar and my steel tools stay attached to that bar so there is very little time lost searching for a tool!!! ( magnetic bar sticks to the top table leg ) !!!!!!!! Works great.

Another small idea with the bench top, I normally like to countersink the screws and put a wood cap on them and you can either leave the cap or sand it flush depending if you want to hide them

I picked up an old desk from a second hand store, it’s an old well worn 50’s/60’s era piece of furniture not cheap laminated MDF like the newer stuff it was probably something you’d find as a school teachers desk with two side by side lockable drawers I added plywood on top to expand the work surface a little and put a urethane clear coat on the plywood to extend the life and make cleanup easier. it’s against a wall that I added some shelving to and I’ve built kinda a cubicle by surrounding two remaining sides with simple store bought free standing steel & MDF shelving since it’s in my garage it sometimes does double duty as a work bench for my 1:1 car repair projects too

Another trick is to get a cheap kitchen counter top from the home center and put that on top of the plywood. They are usually wood with a vinyl top. They handle spills very well but need to be reinforced with plywood underneath.

Love the new workshop Greg! You’ve done a killer job on it. I’d like to do something similar but I’d have to do it on a smaller scale as I don’t have the room you do. Oh, and as soon as you said to grab the tool caddy because they won’t last long, I went to your Amain link to order it......sold out!!🤦🏻‍♂️great video my friend, thanks for sharing!!

The other nice thing about building your own, is you can make it fit you. I have a craftsman work bench I can sit at and I built a much larger work bench I can stand comfortable at. That work bench is 4 foot or 1.2 meters tall so it puts my bench top drill press at a nice usable height for me as well as the vice and bench grinder. I picked up a sheet of 22gauge steel and covered the plywood with it so I can safely do some welding on it.

I'm not new but just have been using my gaming desk to work on my RCs.😬. I already built one but I'm just curious about your ideas. What j built is hard to explain. It's a simple desk on the bottom but it has shelfs on the back and right side and has a platform on the shelfs and a little support in the left side for the part of the top that's hanging so I can't out my Maxx on the top. And so I can out some leds on the top so I can see what I'm doing

I have the Axis-RC 5th scale work stands I have three looking to get at least one more I have all their adapters LOSI 5ive-T/DBXL HPI Baja adapters two, Kraken-RC Vekta-5/KV5TT adapters x2 wish they did one for the FID-RC Dragon Hammer plus MCD and FG as I have got al these I need stands like them for my TRAXXAS UDR and LOSI SBR clone hopefully one will happen I have the Dynamite-RC Universal 5th scale stand it is bad as it being universal it fits none well or easy to mount any vehicle avoid it unless you only want it for just one and can leave it for that not changing mounts to fit others, I have had my DBXL and HPI 5SC fall off while trying to mount them up. I also have a Sealey mobile height adjustable small workbench for engine and vehicles with no stand a Taskmaster engine rebuild trolley for my soldering station and three BZM engine stands and one Overkill Concepts engine stand along with a Fast Eddy HPI work stand for work tops not like the others free standing, having limited room having one's you can roll out the way put in a corner or fold up out the way the Axis-RC ones are great to take to a track day or even while bashing if repairs need doing.
