Nice clear video. Can I just add: be careful if you borrow packs from flying buddies. Fixed wing pilots usually have lower 'C' packs that their Quad friends which can pretty much knacker the pack on hard punch-outs. Also, foam extinguishers don't work well on packs if they burst - wet sand seems to be the most effective at removing the heat and damping the pack spitting. And yes this happened at our club, and no it wasn't me.

Nice video. However Lipo Bags are not safe at all. They dont shield enough heat, they dont hold back fumes and they are more too thin and it is possible for a burning lipo to burn right through them. Ammo boxes or other metal boxes have similar problems, it doesnt matter if you hold back the flame, when the surface of your container gets hot enough to ignite other materials arround them. For using the term "safe" propperly, I would suggest looking at solutions like the "bat safe" or similar diy solutions with propper heat shielding that can be done cheap. Never ever put your lipo in airthight containers. Those can turn into bombs due to the amount of gas generated during a lipo fire. Always make sure the container can vent. However the most important thing to do is to oversee your lipos while charging.

Lee, thanks for the Battery video.... Good tips to care for the LiPo's. I ordered the Pixhawk 4 Power Management Board (PM07)from 3DXR yesterday. No one in the USA had any in stock and I won't buy from china. Couldn't find your video on YT about how to use Power Module (PM02) with ESC's. =)

I've recently had a 3 cell detonate like a bomb. Lucky the second I saw it failing I threw it in an ammo box. It's exploded bending the box quite extremely and the post fire was intense. Lucky I'm diligent about watching when charging lipos but never knew they can explode with extreme force. I encourage if you use lipos be very careful and NEVER leave one charging unattended and have a fire extinguisher 🧯 close by! ALWAYS!!

info i wish i had years ago. so many puffed batteries because i thought they needed to be full. at least the ones i ruined were cheap

I wish all my lipo has that good condition. Mine all bend n crack lol

just a thought. my build requires 4s 3000-4000 mah 14.8v 35c lipo. I happen to have my dji phantom 4 batteries here which are 4s 5350mah 15.2v (c rating unknown) and I can get an adaptor to convert then to xt60. I've asked on some fb pages and I'm getting mixed opinions on 'considering them in the build. I have two and car+house charger so ideal if they would work well. what would be your thoughts on this. Not sure as I don't use those packs but I am aware that they have some extra stuff in them to stip pilots using non DJI batteries in their products. The question I'd have is how/of that extra 'intelligence' would stop it from being OK.. Happy flying

I have bought a brush less motor for a rc plane build.... Now what should I consider first.. Buying an ESC or a BATTERY

I like your video, i do have a couple of questions though. One is how soon can you use them after charging and also how soon can you charge them after flying? I am a new comer to your and im enjoying so far...... 👍

If you've charged the pack using Lee's guidelines (preferably Balanced) you should be good to go straight away. If the pack is hot after a Fast Charge at the field (and I mean Hot) something is wrong. Recharging after flying - the same rule of Warm/Hot packs apply. If it's hot the pack has too small a 'C' rating. You're better having several packs so you have the time to cycle them at a more sedate rating.

Good questions. You can use them right after charging. I normally wait just a few minutes after flying to let them "settle" before attempting to charge. Not long really. About 10-15 minutes. It's worked for me fine over the past few years. I also keep an Excel spreadsheet with all my batteries on it to keep track of how many times I've used and charged them. I do this by brand of battery do I know which ones work the best for me. I also know how much each one weighs (important for thrust-to-weight ratios), and other statistics. I do this by putting some identification numbers on each battery.

Thanks for a great video on the topic of LiPos. Is the relationship between voltage and amphours consumed linear? Has one drawn 80% of the amphours when the cells are at 3,5V? Or can one for example consume 80% of the amphours but have a voltage of 3,9V, or have a voltage of 3,5V but only consumed 65%?

Pretty much, look up discharge curves for LIPOs and you'll see how they work.. Maybe a detail for a follow up video!?

I always charge to 4.15v per cell and discharge to 3.5 per cell. I have a pa k thats 9 years old and still has about 80% of its capacity. Take care of your packs and thell last a while

I do the same. I'm always sad to see packs that have been abused so much that they've puffed up within a few months - so many years of loyal service wasted.. Happy flying!

exactly wats happend to a few of the battrys we use for teaching as we spoke about other day 3 of em have all charged 2 of the cells 4.20 and 1 cell 3.80 ore something.same batch of lipos gnb.strange

Sounds like a bad battery, I'd check the internal resistance of the low cell and also. Check that the charger is OK too... Happy flying
