    Great review, thanks for sharing. Your videos are excellent! I purchased the 12" Razzo tube and the larger chaff collector kit and I agree both work well. I can get a better reading on the bean temperatures now and have added a thermocoupler. Just started using Artisan software too. That will take some time to figure out and use appropriately. I have a FR extension tube on an SR500. I found that by placing the roaster on a cutting board that's being elevated on one side, the resulting angle of the roasting chamber basically allows the beans to easily flow up the high side, keeping the batch moving and rotating very consistently, without those big surges that happen when it tries to push all the beans up at once. This also keeps the beans from jumping so high in the tube, which keeps more out of the chaff collector. I don't know the precise angle, but you'll know you went too far if the whole thing tips over ;). Although, I haven't had that happen yet, and I probably have about 50 roasts under my belt with this angle technique. I bet you'll fall in love with this right away. Other than potentially tipping over your roaster, let me know if you can find any reasons not to use this technique.

  • @TheCaptainsCoffee

    I have heard of this technique! Never tried it myself. I'm cautious to try it on the SR800 since it's a bit larger, taller and generally more...unwieldy than the old SR500. A friend of mine tried it with his SR800 and OEM extension tube and found the anxiety of it almost tipping over wasn't worth it for him 😂 I'll give it a try one of these days and report back!

    WOW, your reply is a game changer! Thank you so much Troy. I've probably roasted 60-80 times with my SR800 and have been getting fed up with unevenly roasted beans with the extension tube and getting beans that were scorched. Also due to the jumping surges, I was unable to get a good medium roast either. too jumpy. My bean temp was peaking high/low and my ROR was all over the place. I tried your trick with a piece of 1/2" wood and ... wow... I can't believe after 2 years owning this thing, all it took was a seemingly little comment... No surges. Nada. I can't wait until this medium/City roast (Brazil) airs out for the next 36 hours....smells amazing.

    Hey Troy! I've gotten around to doing about 15 roasts now with varying angles and I must say...wow, you were right! DISCLAIMER: this definitely destabilizes your roaster, so if you try it use extreme caution!!! I've only done 225g batches with it to help w/ stability and I pay close attention to the fan to make sure it's not slinging weight around too generously. You really don't need much, I'd say 1/4 inch thick material (wood or some other heat resistant material) and you get the effect. I actually ended up speaking w/ Kent from Razzo about this and he mentioned that he was trying to find a way to safely build a stable angle (I think he said it was something like 3 degrees) into a future iteration of his chamber. He didn't confirm if it was possible but one can dream!

    @@TheCaptainsCoffee Awesome! I was looking at some more coffee forums today and thought to myself... wonder if anyone found my comment helpful. Glad to see it did. Next to the custom roasting chamber, I think it's the best thing I've found to improve the use of the fresh roast. For obvious reasons, the manufacturer with never recommend this technique, which is too bad. I should probably post it to some more discussion groups that deal with the Fresh Roast machines. I have photos that I can post too. If you have any recommendations where to post, just let me know.

    I definitely plan on doing a demo roast video with the Razzo in the future! Until then, check out this playlist: (kzread.info/head/PLN1WqO4DwZr-vH3Ag35X70fRMQxYTYhPv ) Especially the videos w/ the fresh roast extension tube. It won't be exactly the same w/ the razzo chamber but the same general principles apply, you just have a lot more airflow to work with and don't need to manage it as much! When watching the other SR800 demos I have, remember to pay attention to the "why" of the adjustments that I make as the exact adjustment numbers won't work as well w/ the razzo due to the added airflow.

    Thanks for this video.... I have the 12" v5 tube with the thermocouple port and the chaff collector mod. I use 2" thermocouples, one straight through the top of the chaff collector and one in the port. I use artisan. When roasting I start with fan at 9 and heat at 1....primarily drop the fan speed to manage ROR with heat increases as needed depending on the bean that I am roasting. I also use Audacity and a microphone to watch for the beginnings of first and second cracks on my computer screen. Most roasts are 225g (8oz). Love it.... I am adding additional info..... The chaff collector extension is a necessity when using the Razo extension tube but a slight mod helps out... Some beans jump a lot and will still jump up into the chaff collector, especially if you roast more than 8 ounces....... I had some screen wire and cut it so as to allow chaff to easily pass through it but small enough to block most beans from passing into the collector... I then placed it over the main entry into the chaff collector... It may take a few tries to get this new screen adjusted to have the right amount of screen wire to keep the beans from getting by yet allowing all the chaff to get through into the collector.... Keep trying till you are satisfied.. It took me 3 roasts...... Result: very few beans get caught in the collector while all the chaff does...

    I'm in the same boat. Just bought the SR800 from TCC and have a Gené Cafe (also for TCC) to get to the 1 pound arena. There's a big demand for this especially in the sub $1000 range. I don't understand why fresh roast or gené cafe could increase size to handle 500g. It's seems there's a huge market between 250/300g to 500g that no one is capitalizing on. Even an upgrade to a Huky, you still only get 250/300g. 🙄 All you would need is a glorified hair dryer and a tube. Lol

    I might get this even though I already have the FR Extension Tube for 2 reasons: 1. After 4 months with the FR Extension Tube, I have had the added hassle of the bottom rubber gaskets randomly snapping/popping inward whilst in the middle of a roast, which might be messing with the flavor profile of some of my roasts. The Razzo would eliminate this hassle altogether. 2. The added headroom with the chaff collector extension accessory would cut my weekly roasts down from twice a week (usually on the same day) to once a week, saving money on electricity.

  • @TheCaptainsCoffee

    @TheCaptainsCoffee

    2 жыл бұрын

    1. Whoa, I've never had that happen before with my extension tube! Are you sure they're firmly all the way on the bottom of the tube before you put it in the chamber? 2.a. Keep in mind the chaff collector extension is a separate item to purchase! I didn't want to think I had misled you into thinking they were a package deal with the chamber. That being said, you definitely can't get the most out of the 12inch razzo chamber (safely) without the extension (or some home brewed form of chaff mitigation) and I'd recommend the chaff extension even if you stick with the extension tube. 2.b. Good thought on bigger batches = less electricity! I will warn you that with those big batches, it's best to pre-heat the razzo and you'll need a good bit more heat (power knob) during the roast to get 12 ounces to development. Even with that, though, it is still probably a net reduction in electricity usage, though I haven't done the math yet haha

    @@TheCaptainsCoffee 1. Yup, has happened 2 or 3 times now, and it stresses me out everytime it does so. And I always unscrew the base part at the very bottom of the roasting chamber to make sure it free of chaff/beans that didn't get out at the end of a roast, since that can mess with future roasts. They always look secure when I screw the base back on. Still has the problem of warping inwards every 2-3 batches in the middle of roasts, though. Can't help but wonder why they didn't just make one extra thick gasket instead of three thin gaskets. 2. Yes, I am aware that this two things are separate purchases. If I can get the added convenience of only having to roast a single larger batch instead of two smaller roasts for 9-10 days worth of coffee, then that would make it worth the ~$250 purchase (after tax and shipping) for me. I see some people on here saying they wish they could roast an entire pound of beans in one roast, but fresh-roasted beans only retain their flavor for about 7-10 days, and I hardly ever share my coffee with anybody else, and I drink about 3 cups worth of coffee per day, so 12 oz in a single batch is perfect for me, because I will finish consuming a batch right at the end of that 7-10 day window.

Under the exact same conditions (225g, same beans, same ambient temps, closely monitored bean temps) I was able to get roasts that were essentially identical. But max size batches with chaff mitigation? Razzo. Mid-size batches with hot/fast roasts to preserve max acidity? Extension. Pour your beans into a metal colander, set that colander on a heat resistant surface and place the hose of the vac right next to the colander. Or you can make a home brewed cooler by cutting a hole in a heat resistant bucket and setting the colander on top of that with the vac hose in the hole you cut.

    One issue the Razzo seems to solve is that of air escape where the chamber fits into the base on the standard unit. While not a huge issue, if I notice beans not "dancing" quite right, it invariably is the chamber not precisely seated in the base. Only a slight mis-seat will allow air to escape. Even when the seating is correct, I still notice a slight amount of air escaping in this area. Are you familiar with any gaskets (for lack of a better term), that could help with this?

  • @TheCaptainsCoffee

    You've brought up an excellent tip I forgot to include in my beginner's guide! I've run into that as well, where I can't get good airflow and realize it's because I didn't seat the bottom of the chamber properly. As far as improving the seal, I don't know what gaskets would be best for that application, though it's an excellent idea! They'd definitely have to be able to take 500F+ temps. The gaskets that come with the fresh roast extension tube would probably work. Though I'll admit, I'm afraid to try it and risk melted gaskets ruining my roaster!

    I have experimented with many solutions. Two problems with gaskets: one is the pressure is upward, and the gasket just lifts up and off, and 2nd even with the highest temperature silicone o-rings rated for 450F the heat causes causes the silicone to go soft. The solution is a precision machined base that seals in the 70mm ID AND the 90mm top ledge. It will not lift, and is 99% tight proven by pressure tests at 8WC. FYI the Razzo base material is 6061-T6 aluminum anodized in black.

  • @TheCaptainsCoffee

    That is a REALLY tough call honestly. I speak with a lot of Fresh Roast users and I hear great feedback from both. I personally simply got more used to the extension tube since I used it for a year before getting the Razzo so I do about 75% of my roasts with it to about 25% of my roasts with the Razzo depending on what I want to do. I think they're both excellent choices and you'll probably eventually end up with both 😂. In the meantime, I'd shop your budget! The extension tube gives a TON of bang for your buck but the build quality isn't as nice. The Razzo has much better craftsmanship, but it's certainly more pricey.

    Hey! While it does depend on quite a few variables (amount of coffee loaded, variety of coffee, chaff mitigation or none, etc) side by side under the exact same conditions, I get about the same amount of air movement. It's really about the kind of movement, though. The extension tube shoots straight up in a big wall and at high fan speeds can gurgle (or slug as shown in the vid) so I tend to pull it back just enough to get good, relatively even agitation. The razzo is more dispersed and can take more fan without slugging. In general, the razzo seems to operate better for me with a slightly higher fan and heat setting while the extension operates better for me at slightly lower fan and lower heat. The dynamics of the movement is what's different is a good way to put it.

    @@electricladyland5680 my pleasure! Actually with the extension tube, just a wash with warm soapy water will do the trick if your SR800 is already broken in. If you're breaking in a new SR800, I like to run 2 cycles to dark roast, just to make sure there's not anything rattling around in the main unit and to make sure it's fully functional. @@electricladyland5680 this one's pretty individual. If you've got a system that works with another roaster, stick with that! A properly vented range hood shood do the trick, esp with a cracked window if needed. I've seen plenty of users home brew a ventilation setup with wood stove parts (both rigid and flexible metal pipe/hose) from the hardware store and vented out a window. Or the simpIest solution, roast outside! Depending on your climate of course 😉

    When you roast with the Razzo, once you get the hang of it, can you produce roasts as good as specialty artisan roasters? Or even in the same realm of quality of roast? And how do very light roasts come out with the Razzo Tube?

  • @TheCaptainsCoffee

    @TheCaptainsCoffee

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I think the Razzo tube is capable of award winning roasts! I think you're likely to need additional mods such as a thermocouple and data logging software as well as very controlled variables (climate control, reliable chaff and exhaust mitigation, etc) just like you'd have with a professional grade roaster setup. Light roasts are not a problem at all.

    @@yonigrey3956 for me it depends on the coffee! If it's fully washed, I find I can push that 12oz limit pretty reliably, but for naturals or honey I like 10-11oz. Yes! The point of the fluting of course was to reduce slugging, unfortunately it keeps you from being able to see the beans (check for sufficient movement, watch color change, etc). So Kent found a way to reduce slugging without the fluting by using the (I forget what he's calling it) new metal rod in the chamber. Now we can see the beans again!

    With the factory extension tube, I can comfortably roast 10oz on the SR800 w/ the Razzo chaff extension kit, or about 9oz with the stock chaff collector (unless it's a natural process coffee, in which case I stick to a safe 8oz). With the Razzo chamber, I can comfortably roast 12oz w/ the Razzo chaff collector extension kit.
