Razor Sharp Edge Making System - Another way to sharpen you knives.
Ойын-сауық
This video shows a different method for sharpening knives using the Razor Sharp Edge making system.
Be careful using power tools like grinders and buffers. Wear eye protection. Do NOT wear loose clothing or jewelry. Pay attention! Read the instruction and safety manuals.

Hi again Red, I really appreciate you taking the time to give me these tips. I'm always trying to improve and learn. Thanks!
Thanks I really appreciate you doing a video on this, I was questioning whether to buy this or not, you sold me! Thanks again
Good tip on the Sharpie marker. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Hi Red, Great tips! My blades thank you and the others who've suggested I use the slotted paper wheel more and the abrasive wheel less. Thanks.
wolfdenpaul, Thanks for telling us about the Loray sharpener and your experience. Good stuff.
Nice video! As I commented in your older video, I've had this system for 10 years and use it a lot. I still use a Lansky diamond system for precise work, but mostly the Razor Sharp Edge System for quick blade touch-ups. I tend to use the plain paper wheel and compound more than the abrasive disc to pull off any wire or rolled-over edges. I also put a foot pressure switch on the motor as the on/off switch now faces to the rear.
Thanks for your experience and for the tips. Great info!
Hey, SyberPrepper! I love the videos; I would love to see the knives up close before and after you sharpen them! Thanks and stay safe man!!
For those who have the system, re-gritting the wheel per factory specs just does not work, but I found a way that does- 1. Take all of the grit and glue off down to bare paper per factory specs. This is very important! Don't fudge. 2. Make sure the wheel surface is flat and square (again per factory specs). 3. Remove the wheel from the grinder. 4. Take newspaper and spread it out to about 30 inches. 5. Lat down a line of grit that is longer than the rolling length of the wheel and spread it out wider than the wheel. 6. Coat the wheel edge with white glue per factor instructions. Do not use woodworker's glue. It sets up too fast. 7. Roll the wheel in the glue, rocking it from side to side, until it is fully coated, then let it sit overnight. This works for me and is also much easier and quicker than the RazorSharp way. Hope this helps...

Did this work ok ? I tried using the method they suggest on the instruction booklet . Soon as I turned it I again all the grit flew off. To be fair though I not sure I put enough glue on. Going to try your method next .

Mine worked as expected, but what I found was my coating did not last any longer than the factory-installed one. For casual sharpening the system is okay, but does not hold up to more aggressive use such as for an active woodcarver- at least that has been my experience. I expected the system to be more robust given how much it costs out of the box and being, candidly, nothing more than processed paper. Oh, well. Going back to my water stones. Slow and messy, but long-lasting and reliable. One last thing- I still use the buffer wheel, but the grit wheel is 'in the drawer'.

+Tony Kibbie do you finish them on buffer wheel after whet stone ? I use mine for taking bones out of meat. Sometimes it's a lottery if this system gets em sharp .

I do run my blades and tools across the wheel after stoning. It seems to give the edges that little extra bit of polish that I don't seem to get from stones. Maybe it's unnecessary. After all, people have been making razor-sharp tools long before Razor Sharp came along.
Again, more good info. Thanks.
Thanks Emil!
I'll check it out. Thanks.
what kind of wax would you use when you run out or you have to get more i was thinking of making my own wheels the compound i could get the wax im not sure
You got a like for the best laugh today. Thanks for keeping what would normally be edited out and capitalizing on the general "Huh?" that we all felt !! It still cracks me up ! Keep 'em comin ! I'm not preachin safety like the other guys... Go ahead, run around with that knife too ! Just keep the camera rolling ! WCL- I've taken a vow of poverty.. To annoy me, send money.
Thanks! I really like this system! Are you having trouble keeping the "grit" on the grit wheel? Mine seems to be flaking off after only a few knives
houstonshigh, Sounds like you went after one area on your blade too much. Did you use the Razor Sharp abrasive wheel or just the normal grinding wheel on the grinder? Sharpening with power tools can really eat a lot of steel off the blade if you're not careful. I mostly use the stropping wheel to finish the edge and try to stay away from the abrasive unless I really need it. Thanks for the question.
I just bought a really knife khukri knife but it does not have any edge on it at all. I have some knowledge about sharpening knifes but I have never had to create an edge before more or less just sharping up existing edges.... how would you suggest that I go about getting this Khukri razor sharp? Thanks
Wow. That knife has a lot of curves. I think a knife like that is going to be a challenge no matter what type of sharpener you have. The Razor Sharp system wheels are pretty narrow and I think would be a good option, especially the stropping wheel, because you have a lot of range of movement as you move around the curve of the blade.
your videos are kick ass please keep making more!
22 degrees is right on, I bought a knife sharpening machine way back in late 80s, called a loray sharpener, uses sanding belts and knife fits in a jig and same angle on both sides, then with knife still in jig you got to the hone, same angle. It gets blades like a razor every time. Machine paid for itself many, many times over, over the years, only one complaint, it was to sharp LOL. enjoy your machine.
Would you recommend the harbor freight grinder for this operation?
Good video. But what I really like about it is that you lowered the volume level when you did your passes on the wheel. Such a small detail but one that nobody ever does. Until now.
@SyberPrepper
10 жыл бұрын
In my previous video, I didn't think about lowering the volume, but I got so many comments about how annoying it was that I decided to lower it. Very easy to do in Vegas Movie Studio. Thanks for the comment.
Hey WCL, Glad you liked my correction. I should have inserted some sound effect to go along with it. I have some screams and other sounds in my other sharpening video where I cut my finger. :) Thanks for watching.
uraijit, Good tip and thanks for watching.
Alexander, A before and after look at the knives would be a great video. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion. I'll try and do that soon.
cbecker11, Not really having trouble keeping the grit on the wheel. I do find that I use the grit wheel less these days and use the slotted wheel more so that reduces the amount I use the grit wheel.
The ability to re-grit the wheel is another great feature. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Steve, The curved blade is a challenge. For establishing the bevel it would really help to have a tool like the Edge Pro Apex or the Wicked Edge. Both are kind of pricey but either tool you would know you have a consistent angle. Other than that I've heard of people using belt grinders, chain saw files, or sandpaper wrapped around a wooden dowel to put on the initial edge.The wheels I demonstrate in the video could work, but you would be guessing at the angle and could remove too much metal.
The first Porter Cable bench grinder had a problem/defect. It did not hold the speed and made odd noises so I returned it. Next, I went to harbor Freight and got this buffer and mounted the sharpening wheels on it. Thanks for stopping by.
Like ZeusGod, I've been using paper wheels for quite a while, about 7 years IIRC, and I also use the rouge side much more than the grit side. Except for damaged edges I've never had to use the grit side for routine sharpening after the first time. A trick to match factory angles: Use a sharpie to color the bevel then run it once on each side across the rouge wheel. You'll be able to see if you're on and which way to go to correct it if you're off.
Thanks for your sub bro. You have a good channel
If the blade isn't damaged it should only take a couple of passes to raise that burr now do the same with the other side and once you see that burr feather up in a nice even line and if you had your angle right then your done. You use the paper wheel to remove the burr.He also showed me to use the bottom of the paper wheel for safety reasons since you don't need to SEE the edge burring up anymore.Once you get used to the angles you don't need to be at the center or even with anything. Cheers~red
watched both of your knife sharping vids this way the right way you can get more pressure on the wheel using this way your first vid the wrong way of sharpening knifes thank you for the vid ..also thy a rest tool you can use with them machines less chance of slipping pluss you get the angel right every time with the tool
Thanks for the video. I can only use/control my right hand. Can you pass on top of the wheel flipping knife in the right hand?
@SyberPrepper

You don't want to reverse the blade as it approaches the wheel. It will cause the blade to dig into the wheel and throw the knife. Very dangerous.
Did it work? How sharp before and after?
What kind of a strap is that? Thanks.
Thanks for the comment. I agree that the system would be a lot more precise, and you could have more repeatable results, if it had a tool rest or something. I plan to look into other methods of precision sharpening, but these wheels are good for a lot of the knives I have.
what are the inner diameter of the sharpening wheels ? &is it made of mdf?
Hi cbecker11, Harbor Freight has a few grinders and buffers. I like this inexpensive buffer I show in the video. It was less than $40.
hola donde puedo conseguir uno de esos ???
Hey SyberPrepper, may you please make a video on the before after cutting effect of the knife. Like show how it cut through paper before going to the wheel, than after using the sharpening stones show how it cuts through the same piece of paper. Thanks for the video

The slotted buffing wheel doesn't really leave a burr. You could always follow up with a leather strop.

Nice. I just picked up that same buffer from HF. Got it on sale and also used a 25% off coupon, so I paid $32. Still have to get my paper wheels from Grizzly. I also purchased a bench grinder stand from HF to mount this on. Is your machine bolted down? Cant wait to start sharpening!
@SyberPrepper

Congratulations! At such a low price, this buffer can't be beat. I don't have mine on a stand yet. I plan to build an attachment so I can get more accurate angles when I sharpen. Once I get that done, I'll probably mount it.
name of the brand of this machine plz?
Unless you are re-profiling the knife, or it is severely beat up, only use the buffing wheel. The grinding wheel with the silicon oxide coating is too aggressive for MOST everyday knife maintenance.
mrbluenun, Your comment didn't show up for some reason. You asked if I planned to make a table to make things easier. The answer is yes. I hope to create a tool rest so that I can get more accurate angles on the blades. So, the table and tool rest are coming. Thanks for watching.
Good suggestions. I appreciate your comments.
As a suggestion, use your body and not your arms. If you lock your arms into position along your sides and shift at your hips, you'll be more consistent.
A casa serve il disco con i tagli ?
Will Pickett, You are very kind. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
You might also want to check to see if you can reverse the base on the grinder. It took all of 5 minutes to do that on my Ryobi grinder, now the switch is back in front. One thing I noticed, you make multiple passes on the grit side ... is your grit worn off? I never have to make more than 2 passes, and I see sparks on that side, I didn't see any when you did it. I learned the hard way to use a lot of wax, it cuts too aggressively if I don't, and it also blew off a lot of the grit.
Using your index finger to hold a very light yet constant pressure.Also you don't have to come off of the wheel with each pass so when you get to the heel end just pull it back towards the tip. WHOA! Did you remember you changed the direction of rotation? Just make sure not to turn the edge into the direction of rotation and sharpen on the top of the wheel pointing that index finger straight out and level. Now when you can see the edge burring up your done lift straight up do the other side..red
On my first abrasive wheel, I used a lot of wax. It got gunked up and then didn't work well. This is my second abrasive wheel and I don't use as much wax now. Thanks for watching!
Have you ever gritted the grit wheel? Would like to see how you do that.

Hello Roy, I've not re-gritted a wheel yet. I'll do a video when I do. Thanks for watching.
Appreciate it. Back atcha. :)
I just bought a 1000 grit stone for my benchgrinder. Would it be good for my chef knife?
@SyberPrepper
6 жыл бұрын
It would be so easy to mess up a good knife, like a chef knife, with a power tool, I would not do it. A stone and a leather strop would be a safer way to go. If you could test out your new stone and bench grinder on some other less important knives, and get a lot of experience, then you can decide whether to use this on your chef knives. Good luck.

boyyoyo: The wheels are still going strong after 2 years. After learning to use them, I use the slotted wheel much more than the grit wheel. Also, I just sharpen now and then so I can't really say how many knives I've sharpened. Thanks for the question.
Yeah, I'm probably eating more blade than I need to with the grit wheel. I've started using the slotted strop wheel more now instead.
Hey ChuckHydro, Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
No blade test ?
why did you have the wheel turning the other direction in your other video?
@SyberPrepper
8 жыл бұрын
+Reid Nunn Hi Reid, The instructions that came with the wheels showed the wheels should turn toward you, so that's what I showed in the other video. In this video I demonstrated the sharpening method that several folks on KZread suggested where the wheels turn away from you.
Just wondering. Shouldn't you stop the at the middle of the wheel, whit the tip of the blade so it don't get round (tip). Hope you see what I meen
@SyberPrepper
10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. It would save the tip and be safer. Thanks for the comment.
I've not tried to sharpen a machete with the wheels yet. I can see how it would be easy to get into trouble with long blades. Thanks for the comment.
Is there different grit that can be used other than the 180 it comes with? Thanks nice vid

how coarse is 180? Isn't that very course? I mean is this rating in the same grit rating as waterstones or sandpaper?
@SyberPrepper
10 жыл бұрын
My guess would be that it is like 180 grit sandpaper. You can heat up a blade on the wheel if you're not careful. You can tell by touch if the blade is getting too hot, so it's not hard to keep the temp down.
@ActionHero29

ok thanks
where is the demonstration on how sharp is your knife? Have you tried to cut paper with it?
Joshua, thanks for the encouragement. I'm working on a new video showing a tool rest for this sharpening system which will make it even better. I appreciate your comment.
Just a pointer. I noticed that you're dragging the knife all the way over the edge. This can wreak havoc on the point of the blade. Lift it up when the blade point is about half-way across the wheel.
I have even used the plain wheel to power strop straight razors as a beginning sharpening stage For you naysayers, check out how a factory produces and sharpens straight razors. The plain wheel and rouge will put a mirror finish on the edge.
Hello Syber, I agree with Bill when it comes to sharpening on the paper wheel. The silicon carbide encrusted wheel is more for removing material like re-estalishing the edge, getting past a ding or retipping etc.The guy who showed me how to use these wheels I believe is the first guy to put them on the market in this region anyway "Charlie's Wheels of Fortune" You scared me during both of your videos.He taught me to never let the blade tip or end come off of the wheel but to lift it up.Sensible?
Great video, I would recommend not dragging the tip all the way off of the wheel, rather stop the tip half way across the wheel as to not damage the tip.

Or the wheel for that matter. I have hit the side of the wheel a few times with the tip of a knife and left a nice little tear in the cardboard.

Great guidance. Thank you.
You almost learned the reason why about 30 times in the 2 demo's I watched.Please don't end up on one of those failed videos.That is probably why someone suggested you turn the grinder around so it throws the knife away from you.Also you need to apply even pressure consistently.Turn your machine back around and with right hand make a fist,stick out index finger,approach wheel with knife,place 2nd knuckle on the center of blade spine w/ tip 1/8" Past the wheels edge now lower and start sharpening
Nice job but why 180 grit. The wheel is spinning at over 3,000 rpm which is not very forgiving. Why not a finer grit like 600 or 800 grit?
@SyberPrepper
4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Seems like a finer grit would be better. I don't know why they do that.
Dennis, Still trying to complete the interface to dubstep.net. :)
Yeah but how long does that take? This system will get you way past hair shaving sharp in a fraction of the time.
The First time I tried this with my machete I didn't anticipate the power of the grinder so now it has some ugly scrapes but it doesn't really matter its already beat up from constant use
Why do you like this knife sharpening product over and of the others?
I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.
Still liking your Grissley wheels??
@SyberPrepper

DrDennis77 I sure do. I don't use them a whole lot but they work great for a quick tune up. I need to get back to completing my jig so I can have a precise angle instead of guessing at the angle.
Funny, I saw a "pro" doing this same thing, and he did not know enough to turn the grinder around for safety like you did. But, he has a fancy shop, so I suspect we were supposed to be distracted by that and his tattoos.

you don't have to turn it around, you can reverse the base--or you can sharpen on the very front. Matters not one bit so long as the wheels are spinning away from the edge.
Interesting. Well, you can always just sand the wax/grit off and re-grit it. Ive done that a few times, just because I have had my wheels a few years.
funurayt050, Good advice. Thanks for the tips
Do you think dry ice is a waist of time ?
@SyberPrepper

I'm not familiar with using dry ice with knife sharpening. Sorry.
They sell even thinner wheels that I think would work for curvier blades
Thanks for commenting and stopping by. This system is very fast.
works much better if you can slow the rpm's down to 1750 or even less.
But does it play dubstep?
wow for 40 bucks I can take a chance on that
You did not demonstrate the sharpness of the Blade after ????

"Soat Mon" has a very much better video on using on of these. He makes a jig for guiding and all. He understands bevels and burs. The name of his video is: Sharpening Knives on the DIY Budget Knife Sharpener. Posted yesterday. You don't have to make/use the guide assembly or reverse your base---but it's all easy enough.
How can I order this razor edge making system

Hi Rita, You can get them at Grizzly goo.gl/NuIPnM or from Amazon.
@robertmaybeth3434
8 жыл бұрын
+Rita Yon amazon, just called edge making system. then you need a grinder to attach them too.
The tip should only come to about half-way across the wheel. Then you lift the blade off. dragging it over the edge like he was doing can lead to rounding off the tip of the blade. As for only using the SC wheel for re-profiling, that's not accurate either. The SC wheel is what gives the blade the "angel hair" or "wire edge", the stropping wheel buffs that angel hair off, and gives you a RAZOR edge. I guess you have to have used the wheels to really understand...
try and not drop the tip off the wheel. you will grind off your tip in time.. just my 2 cents great video
