Razer Blade Stealth 13 Review from a MacBook user's POV

I love my MacBook Pro! But this new 2020 Razer Blade Stealth 13 has me looking at my MacBook differently. I explain why in this review.. COME ON APPLE!!

The Razer Blade Stealth 13 packs an Nvidia GTX 1650 TI graphics card which is really impressive for how portable this ultrabook is!
It also comes with a new 10th-Gen Intel i7 quad-core CPU, so it definitely has a lot of performance.
In this video, I take a look at the new Blade Stealth from an Apple user's perspective to see what I like and dislike about this new laptop.
I compare a few things about it to Apple's 2020 13" MacBook Pro with Four Thunderbolt 3 ports which is priced at $1800.

16:10 on Blade would be impossible to do cuz there is option for 120hz FHD screen targeted mostly for gamers and most games don’t run at 16:10 and having black bezels while gaming sucks(backlight-bleed in night while gaming for example). And making 2 different displays(16:9 and 16:10) and 2 different display assembly would be expensive to produce..

@@mohddanial2619 there is literally not a single laptop in the market roght now with acceptable quality speakers. Even macbook has crap speakers. The clarity is bad, frequency response too. Basically for anyone who is really into sound quality just immediately discards laptop or phone speakers because they are literally non representative and useless and immediately go for the external quality sound system. To me personally, if the company saves money on laptop speakers to lower the laptop cost, this is literally the best option a company can do.

  • @erikcebokli9585

    @erikcebokli9585

@@mohddanial2619 because there is no good laptop speakers because it is currently impossible to make speakers with such small membranes to be able to reach the critical minimum frequency response a speaker needs to reflect the sonic information of a given sound signal. It has to do with physical limitations - if not the speaker then there is the limitation of physical volume those soeakers are installed to - a laptop or a phone is not a suitable environment for speakers to be put into. I'm not saying anything in particular but as a previous mac owner, praising macbook speakers is much the same as praising intel integrated graphics - we know it kinda works, but only kinda. Everyone knows if you want to run games you need a stronger, dedicated gpu and it is much the same with speakers. As a mixing engineer I simply have to dislike laptop and phone speakers as they pretty much dictate the way we mix music nowadays - everybody basically almost exclusively listens to music through cheap speakers with bad performance and we are basically forced to tend to the disability of those in particular, resulting in non optimal mixes, emphasized frequency responses in frequency areas that such speakers can handle, resulting in loss of sound clarity and an unbalanced mix. Think about it this way - a game developer desperately needing to adjust their games graphics to look astounding on an integrated gpu, because everybody plays games on those - except that they can actually kind of pull this off as they can simply enable/disable certain gpu resource hogging options while in music you simply can't have the option of listening to the song in different mix settings unless the engineer chooses to release 5 different mix versions of the song. Imagine the confusion and reddit topics as a result. But yeah anyways, I hope you understand where I'm coming from. :)

@@erikcebokli9585 nah, you are just trying to justify your point. It don't make a difference to me. Macbook speaker can fire up the whole house at full volume. Intel integrated gpu, be it iris plus or pro, it still sucks. It just doesn't cut it. But macbook speaker cut above the rest, period. It is a laptop speaker, what do you expect it to be? A bloody sound system? Don't try to sound smart yet the reality is macbook speaker is the best among other laptops' speaker. There's nothing to debate when the product is proven to be good for its price. Stop trying to be metaphorical about speaker. When you relate it to phone speaker, intergrated gpu and game developers? Editing video or photos every day? Well if your software is optimized for GPU acceleration, then yes, it'd be a huge difference when applying effects.

Well done on the video! The only and regular problem with Windows machines is: maintenance and support. Yes, it will work just fine and great for the first couple of years. But with the constant updates, the slower the computer will usually run and the much higher likely you'll need to call up the manufacturer or wait for them to come up with a new driver to fix the problem a Windows update caused. God forbid you upgrade to the next version of Windows. I've been using my new 2020 13" MacBook Pro and love it. For it's intended purpose, it's perfect. It's not a machine that's going to be my sole, creative workstation for the next 5 years. But a 5+ year mobile workstation for small-medium creative needs. And for that, it's quite perfect.

@@robledog I went with the 4k touch screen but the early 2020 model well basically when this video was released there is now a new option I believe with updated CPU specs. I went with the 4k for the touch screen although not being out travelling I have not had much chance to use the laptop at all other than small working away from home in a coffee shop or gym. Obviously first regret is waiting till I needed a travel laptop again and waiting for the most recent model. But the question is would I do anything different between FHD 120 vs 4K, I liked the idea of having a touch screen and think I still want that option when I do get travelling again. I would also say I am 70-80% content creation vs 20-30% gaming which was another reason for the 4K

Better in terms of performance and price, yes. The entry level MacBook Pro 13’ uses an older 8th generation processor and has slower memory. Apple’s laptops are usually a much poorer value compared to PCs, but if you want MacOS you really don’t have a choice. I realised I don’t even use the F1 keys and use the touch screen a bit, but it’s insanely low res though, and looks kinda cheap compared to the main screen. But I actually use it more than F keys and having a slider for brightness and volume settings is better IMO. I’m converted to the touch bar life style.

Very nice review on the 2020 Stealth. I've been trying to find more information about it and there aren't many reviews on it yet, although I did want to point out that the reason why Cinebench R20 has lower CPU scores is something to do with the GPU. I own the 2019 Stealth with the 1650, and my scores were identical to that, but disabling the GPU in Device Manager caused it to spike up to 1750. For some reason in R20, when it detects the Graphics Card, the CPU locks at 15W - while the 25W version is ~1800, which explains why the 28W i5 in the Macbook Pro completely stomped all over the Stealth with CPU score. If the GPU was disabled, that's when it would be able to show the 25W processor's potential, but it is kind of stupid that it seems to underperform in that program whenever the GPU's active, especially when it's supposed to have a higher power limit by default compared to my model.

Idk , maybe you can somehow get to bios motherboard settings when turning the laptop on and then set some settings so the cpu will still be at 25w while 1650 ti is turned on. *NOT RECOMMENDED !* Maybe don’t do that , you’ll put your expensive laptop at risk , because it probably will overheat. Razer probably set the cpu at 15w while 1650 ti is turned on so it won’t overheat and maybe some other issues.

@@armeniancrusader301 Which is exactly what's happened with my 1650 version too when it comes to power limit. It's kind of ridiculous to think if it's the case because a lot of the reviews and discussions about it is that it's supposed to be the 25W version. However, it performs identically to my 2019 RBS which runs at 25W when the 1650 isn't running or is disabled. It's a little misleading in that case.

But take one look at the longevity of other Blade laptops and you will soon realize that Razer's products are garbage in the long term. I'm not hating, but PLEASE guys, look at the quality issues many people are expierencing with Razer laptops. There's a reason that other makers who care more about longevity *never* crammed so much in such a small form factor. It's not built to last.

@@AlejandroLZuvic - yes, OEMs are a bit in shock with surprising performance of Ryzens 4000 but both Lenovo and HP will offer Ryzens in their premium segment laptops soon. Thinkpads are now entering market, for elitebook release date is set to August. No worse screens, no screwed cooling, only lack of TB3 makes difference between Intel and AMD models. For now only thing is certain that we will not see any gaming laptops combining RTX 2070(or better) with Ryzens. Its really revolution, 4800u is faster than i9 from macbook pro 16 and thats with 15W TDP. It can also be turning point for x86 as new ryzens are as effective as ARM processors and rich instruction set on x86 side can make huge performance difference.

Wow - now let us talk price... At least here in Canada the Razer is not affordable at all, almost 3k before taxes. Also coil whine is a no-no because over time that coil will pop itself and is an indication of heat and power not working together. By the way, let's talk heat... Apple is getting more and more flack on that in some of the Reddit groups I am in, I see an increase of about 20% and this might be because they just renewed their line-up but in the past it has been a steady stream of this question in the MacBook Pro group. Personal experience is that I have sold my 13" after I got so sick and tired of the heat and Apple not willing to admit and to adjust anything. I have bought four of those 13" laptops in 2019 in hopes it would be related to one, two I was able to return but the other two were past the due date. I have now a 16" which is heavenly compared to the 13"

Retina is obviously a better option than 1080p or 4k. 1080p doesn't have the clarity of a retina display. Also, 4k has an excessive amount of pixels that add zero value and have the heavy price of draining the battery. I couldn't give this review a like because of this.

I hate how Razer designs such great laptops but the quality control and reliability of the hardware is awful. I have Razer headphones that I only got like 2 years ago and already the volume knob breaks the sound every time you touch it. They design such great stuff but then you have to watch it break. If I ever got this I'd need to get an insane warranty on it, which is sad.

People tend to forget how device reliability should factor into a purchasing decision. Apple has a great reputation for making laptops that last 5+ years. Razer has an extremely poor reputation for device reliability and there are a lot of instances of the devices dying after 2 years or so (like my Razer blade stealth did). There's a reason Razer doesn't offer extended warranties and Apple does.
