Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale Tribute: Perry Mason (Vicki! 4-23-93)

Barbara Hale, who played Della Street on the hit television series Perry Mason passed away this past Thursday (January 26, 2017), and we wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to her and her career... as well as that of her co-star on Perry Mason, one of television's very best, Raymond Burr.
Perry Mason ran on CBS from September 21, 1957 to May 22, 1966, an incredible nine seasons, 271 episodes, all in black and white. Burr received two Emmy Awards for lead actor in the series, while Hale received one for supporting actress. The show has been a cornerstone of the television syndication market from the 1960s up until right now on cable channels (COZI recently).
In this interview, Burr discusses how he began in the entertainment business, and he and Hale discuss their working relationship on the series. The two worked on a successful series of twenty six Perry Mason television films (on NBC) from the mid 1980s to the early 1990s. Raymond Burr passed away on September 12, 1993, not long after this Vicki! program aired in April of that year.
Barbara Hale (mother of actor William Katt) enjoyed a long, successful career on television beyond her star making role as Della Street on the various Perry Mason projects. She worked in movies during the 1940s at RKO Pictures, working with Frank Sinatra, Robert Young and Robert Mitchum and Larry Parks (Jolson Sings Again.)
In the early 1950s, she co-starred in movies with Jimmy Stewart, James Cagney, Charlton Heston, Rock Hudson and Fred MacMurray.
On television after Perry Mason, she made many guest starring appearances on television series including Ironside (again, with Raymond Burr) and Marcus Welby MD (again, with Robert Young).
May both Mr. Burr and Ms. Hale rest in peace. Television viewers are grateful for the legacy they leave us.
We'll have plenty more on Raymond Burr and his second landmark series, Ironside, later on this fall.
This video clip is presented here on KZread for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Enjoy.

One of the very few Hollywood stars about whom it appears no-one had a bad word to say. She was one classy lady. And the chemistry with Raymond was magical. I don't care what anybody says, Perry and Della were in love and Ray and Barbara conveyed it without a word being spoken.

The on--screen relationship between Perry and Della was remarkable not only for its longevity- 1957-1993- but because it was about friendship and mutual professional respect, not lerve. You saw little or nothing of the characters' private lives and no romancing in the office either- just a deepening trust, and Della's growth from 'perfect secretary' to right-hand aide. In a way she symbolized the changing position of working women. This evolution happens a lot in real life but is rarely depicted in movies or TV, which prefers the big bang of 'falling in love' to homely pleasures of collegiality. It is a tribute to the skills of both actors that they kept it going and made it, like Holmes and Watson, ultimately the real subject and fascination of the show. Neither was 'big' enough in personality to dominate the big screen. TV matched their scale. Burr's strange, hypnotic voice and faintly disgruntled expression, Hale's efficiency tinged with warmth. Simmering, not boiling.

@@idaclaire1869 Yes, and Burr had usually played a heavy, e.g. in 'Rear Window'. His image changed for Perry and Ironside, though he was still a brooding, ponderous fellow, without sex appeal. The unusual nature of his on-screen magnetism hinted at the strangeness of his nature, concealing and dissembling about his private life more than any other star of his time.

Barbara definitely changed the image and position women held in our culture by being a full-time working woman. She was one of the first who did this. She was proud of this and felt that women can and do add a lot to what they are involved in. She believed there should be much more of this.

@ Winnie Levine If you think it is "classy" to have to remain secretive about your spouse or family in order to keep your career, then I guess so. That certainly isn't my interpretation, nor has that standard been applied equally in the past. It says rather more about your own issues I would think.

Actually, Mr. Hopper was 55 when he died, on March 6, 1970. He was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 14, 1970, after suffering a stroke. While hospitalized, he contracted pneumonia, and died of it, 3 weeks later.

Perry Mason was one of the best written shows on tv, So was Ironside , Raymond Burr was, still one my favorite stars, Back then tv was classy, And decent , Wish shows like Perry Mason,Twilight Zone,The Outer Limits,The Time Tunnel ,Bonanza,The Big Valley,The Rifleman,The Virginian,Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone,Lost In Space,Space 1999, All these shows was good,It was when Hollywood actually did good work ,and actors could act , (Classic versions, not modern versions )still Would be made , Be nice instead of all these lame reality shows, Why I quite watching tv almost entirely, I manly keep the thing for The Walking Dead only , And to watch these classic shows , With one exception above, There's no new stuff I care to watch , Was a few them nature shows , But they got taken off for some stupid Crap !😕

Thank you for the info on the color episode. We did not know that. We always find it charming and fun to see these older late 1950s series that made it into the mid-1960s, still in b/w. The Perry Mason series started dealing with surfers and rock bands, etc. in that final season. We saw a recent Perry Mason episode in rerun/MeTV (if memory is correct), in which Perry and Della were seated in a cafe watching a rock band play. A clash of generations. Good stuff!
