    As an almost-30-year-old who grew up with this game...I am in awe of this project. The visuals, the voice, and the music...it feels so fresh but also familiar...not your average remake. If you hadn't told me this was a remade Fairy Glade track, I'd have believed it was just another track from the original. I am giddy at the idea of hearing new life breathed into the Marshes of Awakening & Cave of Bad Dream tracks...

    I'm a super-fan, Rayman 2 is my favourite game, would pay £500 for a good HD remake - I love what you're doing. My only wish is that we could play with the original music. Rayman 2's soundtrack is perfect and iconic - and while I like the idea of dynamic changes when fighting - I don't want a breath of fresh air there, that's where the money is, the soundtrack.

    I'm blown away by what you have made so far! Visuals, gameplay and audio all look/sound excellent. The new music stuff is especially exciting; I love the original game's soundtrack, but some of those tracks do sound slightly bare compared with the fuller, more richly textured and atmospheric ones. I know this is very early, and I expect most things we see here are subject to possible change and further polishing, but I want to express my desire to see more moss (and other foliage) on the cliff walls, recreating that very characteristic, lush aspect of the original's look. (For all I know you could already have something planned here, or it's a conscious stylistic divergence etc.)

    I'm looking to hearing the new voicework for this game. Hopefully it won't be as flat as Revolution was. I think the reason why people are so fond of the gibberish used in the N64/Dreamcast versions of the game is because it added to the "Dreamlike" aesthetic of the game, but more than that, it was bouncy and expressive, especially compared to the english voicework. Personally, I would love an option for "gibberish", but even without, I think a new and better dub can carry the characters well.

And, I'm sorry, going on a tangent here, but this 10:02 is just a _really_ impressive tool! You can freely model the tree root's geometry, and its textures just run alongside it! It's like it's slithering or growing as you model it, that's such a useful tool! Also, me and my potato laptop will appreciate all the graphical and performance options!

    The project is crazy, it's undeniable! On the other hand please and I beg you on my knees, I hope that there will be at least the possibility of playing in Raymanian, because I'm sorry but not everyone likes the dubbing proposed as they were able to do it in its Revolution version on PS2... and also, I REALLY hope to be able to play in French, because there the link between the character and the player will be completely broken... personally I don't want to be my chauvinist but Rayman is basic French... already Rayman Redemption me snubs when I spot this on Twitter, while we as non-English speakers also want to immerse ourselves in the history of the game, no matter if we know it, so I hope that these 2 points there will be...because sorry but Rayman who speaks English, it's no for me (I hope that the translation of my text is not badly translated...)

  • @danaedekker

    @danaedekker

    Thanks for your compliment! Regarding the language that the characters speak, the audio team has decided that making Rayman speaking a real language as opposed to gibberish will allow us to give him more depth and flesh out in terms of characterization, something we also hope to accomplish by possibly adding new dialogue here and there. For this decision English was a logical choice, because that allows us to (hopefully) reach the biggest audience. Adding another dub to that would require much more time and expertise, because that involves casting new voice actors and directing them, ideally by someone who speaks the dub language. As you might know, this is a project entirely made by fans who volunteer their free time and dedication to the project, and adding new dubs isn't a priority at the moment. That being said, the subtitles and other text in the game will indeed be translated into multiple languages, most likely including French! As I've stated on another question as well, we unfortunately can't make decisions that will make 100% of the fans happy, but we hope to make a game that many of you will enjoy as much as we enjoy creating it!

    As part of the audio team for R2HD I can reassure you that we've put a lot of time into researching what makes the Rayman 2 music so characteristic, and we're trying our best to replicate those characteristics and catch the essence of the original music, while also adding our own twist to the new soundtrack. Glad to hear that you're liking the Fairy Glade music so far!

  • @beanzthumbz

    @beanzthumbz

    Жыл бұрын

    @@danaedekker You've no doubt captured the original vibe of the game. I can hear that a lot of the original instruments are still present, like the percussion that's adds layers in the background of tracks. I like how some of of the music is reshuffled themes from other levels, like there's a snippet of 'the top of the world' in the fairy glade, and there's 'the cave of bad dreams' motif in the hall of doors. I dare say you've gone too far with it though. As a musician and somebody who knows and loves the Rayman 2 soundtrack inside and out, I don't think you should be rewriting it as much as you are. Like the Rayman 2 theme (the precipice music?) at the end is something that shouldn't be altered. Although it's in the same key and has a similar rhythmic feel, reshuffling the melody like that is too far. It's would be equivalent taking one of the actual stages and scrambling all of the platforming elements, until you get something that resembles the original but has been changed so much that it may as well be it's own original thing. That's not a remake, that's a reboot! It looks like the actual level designers are applying these principles so it makes sense that the soundtrack would follow suit. The level layouts themselves won't be changed, but there will no doubt be slight variations and added sections. If I were you I'd stick to the melodic roots of the original soundtrack, but give it your own twist/ modernisation. As in, keep all of the motifs but add stuff on top of that if you want. Like, what you've done with the canopy music is awesome, the way it changes into combat mode. Also the juxtaposition of the triplets with the straight 8th notes sounds really cool in that piece. I don't mean to rip into you too much, it's just that I basically learned music theory from the original score, and I believe it to be a masterclass of musical composition. There are so many different motifs and themes that are constantly reshuffled and recombined to make new music for all of the different levels. Altering it too heavily is equivalent to altering the original character of the game!

    @@beanzthumbz Thanks for your thoughtful response! Credits for the music also go to my fellow audio team members Jaimy and Maddie, we've done a wonderful job together. As for your comments, we have decided in collaboration with the rest of the development team to make a new soundtrack that alludes to the original, but with new melodic and rhythmic materials, rather than modernizing the original OST, indeed more like a reboot as you mention. That is where we deviate from e.g. the level designs. So far we think that we've done a pretty good job in finding a sweet spot!

  • @beanzthumbz

    @beanzthumbz

    @@danaedekker I think you're definitely making a mistake, why heavily modify something that is already brilliant! For a lot of people (like the person who made the original comment), the 'melodic and rhythmic materials' as you say, literally are Rayman 2. You should probably include the option of listening to the original music when the game releases, if that's the path you're going down. Nevertheless, you've done an awesome job and I'm keen to see what you guys come up with. If you change your mind, hit me up and let me into the team! haha.

    also if you want to go all out on the original, you will notice the boundaries of their maps weren't always simply cliffs and rocks - often, they were a 3D background painted onto a 2D surface, the result of technical limitations I imagine. if you wanted or could, you cloud make these the proper 3D environments they were supposed to be and just put an invisible barrier upon it to show players it's the boundary. this would improve immersion and would be better than simple cliffs everywhere I think

    At first I was a little skeptical, because we see a ton of uninspired poor UE remakes of games that just put stock 4k textures, grass and shaders to the max and they call it a remake But this is not one of them, the amount of attention you put to the little details, using original concept arts to rebuild levels, and the list goes on for all the video. The only thing I'm not convinced is the a bit too florescent looking grass, but it's pretty typical of early access games I can wait to hear more about it, keep up the good work :) !

    On the visual side this looks amazing. You've done some very tasteful and respectable updates, and I commend that. Your visual team has nailed it. However, with as much respect as I can convey when making a criticism like this, I disagreed with almost the entire audio section. The original N64 OST is extremely dear to my heart, it's one of the reasons I started to love music as a child because it captured my imagination so well. There is no reason to _change_ the music. Rearrange, update the instruments to sound higher quality, sure I can understand that. But completely recomposing the game? I disagree. Heavily. That Fairy Glade song was a good imitation of the game's character, and genuine props to your sound team for making something that sounds like it was cut from the Dreamcast OST, but it does not fit the original atmosphere of the level at all. In both the N64 and Dreamcast OSTs, the Fairy Glade song is simultaneously tense and mysterious while also having a groovy bassline. What other soundtrack is able to pull off such a unique dichotomy? Your Fairy Glade song just sounds like any old mysterious forest song. No tension. No groove. It doesn't have that same "stay on your toes" attitude. Again, I'm trying to be constructive here, but sometimes constructive criticism needs to be harsh. Your composers are very talented and have all the right instruments, but they have completely misrepresented the atmosphere of the level and the attitude of the music. The Canopy song was even more off the mark, but this is already much too long. I think you should try to course correct while this is still in early stages. However, this is just one fan's opinion. Thank you for your passion, and I hope your project is a great success, regardless of my opinion.

    Only just learned that this footage got shown, and I gotta say I'm kinda split on the entire thing. I adore Rayman 2, but this doesn't feel like it's true to modern standards other than having higher fidelity assets and more foliage. Quite frankly, I think it'd look better with the foliage completely removed, and the lighting severely toned down, unless it adds to the scene in a meaningful way.Having a modern lighting engine doesn't mean you need the sun blaring in scenes, destroying the intended color palette by washing everything out. On top of that, it seems like the amount of polish in effects and particles is still adhering to the original game, making everything feel uncanny and dated, despite the poly counts of everything. Like when you break open a cage, it just sorta vanishes, and collecting lums has no flash or anything, which doesn't look satisfying. And yeah I might as well repeat what other people are saying about the OG soundtrack being perfectly fine. I really don't like railing on a small project like this, but this is the only team attempting this remake, and Rayman 2 is probably in my top 5 games of all time. I appreciate the man hours and passion you continue to dedicate towards a non-profit project that could be shut down at a moments notice. I hope that this continues to improve and evolve, you got big shoes to fill!

    This looks promising ! But let's bring on some feedback (I know it's at an early stage so I'll try to focus only on what we could see here. Your project goal is fantastic for all rayman fans !) : - Lums looks too small - When you catch Lums, the effect remains too cheap even for a PS1 version (the VFX motion is too simple and the particles textures are too standard, give more identity to these radial gradients !) - The animation of Rayman looks nice overall, except in water where the hands are maybe too far from the body, making Rayman looks less cohesive than in the original. Think about its silhouette, even dismembered, Rayman has to look as a unified body, not as a particle effect. Also, the hair could flow differently in water. Possibly bring a light rhythm by variating movement progress in a sinusoidal back & forth one instead of a linear one, and then play on the hairstyle to bend it accordingly instead of everywhere like here. Perhaps try something depending on speed also, straighten the hair strands more, so the shape really sells that speed effect. Also, the jump recover lacks of an animation if player speed in forward vector=0 - Overall world building lacks of interaction between elements. For instance, rocks in the fairy glade are "rocky" everywhere even when close to the grass, you could add some moss next to it or at least concentrate foliage more near those connection areas - Lighting feels too realistic for a Rayman title, as Rayman 2, 3, Legends, Origins, always had poetic lighting setups and not a classic sunlight/skylight combo. Even if Unreal now offer you to use Lumen doesn't mean you can't still cheat on lighting with spotlights to take control over it. I suggest also to play with some ilghtmasks to give the impress of clouds and distant foliage, or a detailed projection of a lantern for instance - Some models look too soft. Rayman 2 was a lowpoly game of course, but it had still big bold decisions made to the shapes, that you can also see on textures. They are dynamic, sharp. Not softy. That's mostly an issue on the pirate boat where there's almost 0 sharp angle in its design lines. You can of course keep a more dense model approach, but I definitely think having precise angles will help bring dynamism into your assets - The grass is too noisy and lacks of blend with the ground. I personally used both dithering TAA x UV gradient (using only the V Coord if the grass texture is made in the vertical may of course), used on a mask this gives you a nice blend from the ground using a cheap alpha mask, and so the grass looks more integrated in the environment. Also, don't hesitate to mix grass with different kinds of simple floor foliage. In that sense, the game "Kena bridge of spirits" gives a good example (of course, for a Rayman title the textures would require a more stylized approach) - Overall, textures lacks of a gradient approach. When you have a pillar, it's good to have a clear and a dark color from top to the bottom (that's just one basic example with a basic sunlight setup. If light comes from the ground, it can make more sense to have a brighter color on the bottom and a darker one on the top). You can achieve this with vertex color as the blend won't suffer from pixel limits (it's much, much smoother). You can also use dirtmaps, this often is applied through a secondary UV Channel and mostly multiplies a "leak" texture over your basecolor. You can also use it with roughness, metalness, play with a panner to animate it or even use a normalmap texture to make use of the dirt layer as a decal - Music has some interesting points (I loved the much delayed/reverbed guitar tones), but lots of it lacks of swing/jazy vibes that where part of Rayman 2. The idea of blending with combat is interesting, but it shifts from the original pronounced cut we faced in the original Rayman 2. If this was a technical limitation by their time, I think they've used it to their advantage. This allows them to have fewer songs for every enemies of the game and really specific ones per level to support the environment mood. Also the actual fan made tracks looks cheaper in terms of sound mixing, I guess by the time Eric Chevalier had less tools than we have nowadays to compute music, but he made a solid job in faking real instruments, maybe by not sticking too close to existing ones. We rarely hear fake flutes/oboes/violin/piano (it's extremely rare), but more electric guitars and synthesized sounds, with really subtle violins and mystic voices blending with either real but easy to record instruments (triangle, acoustic guitar) or curious ones like engine noises or simple wind.

    Yes, I'm aware of some of the issues you mentioned. Remember the game is still in a pretty early state and nothing is final. That said, some of the things are a part of the new direction we've taken. P.S. We're using UE4, no Lumen here ;)

    This is a pretty impressive work and something I wished Ubi themselves would have done but I guess they can't figure out how to put microtrasanctions into an N64 platformer. The dynamic music system it's pretty ambitious and a clever idea, my only complain it's that I think the first level looks overly bright and sunny for the setting, but I get it's just an alpha. Looking forward for this project.
