RAYBESTOS 1975 AUTO RACING TRIPLE CROWN INDIANAPOLIS 500 SHAFFER 500 ONTARIO 500 57834

This 1975 color film is about the Triple Crown of car racing. It was presented by Raybestos and narrated by Tom Carnegie. It opens with landing a glider, skydiving, a rainy track meet, a hot-air balloon, and a race car. The driver’s face is seen through his helmet. Johnny Rutherford adjusts his steering wheel (:08-1:35). 1975, the race cars are towed into place in Ontario, California. Many famous drivers participate as race highlights are shown. The Foyt, Unser, and Rutherford pit crews spring into action. A.J. Foyt wins (1:36-9:02). At the Indianapolis 500, bands march as the crowds fill the grandstands. Peter DePolo celebrates 50 years after his win there (9:04-9:25). The cars are rolled into position. The Sinmast-sponsored car is shown. Actor James Garner wishes drivers good luck. A large group of balloons are released from the track as the famous “Gentlemen, start your engines” is heard. The pace car beings moving but one car is stalled, causing the rest to drive around it before he gets it started. The green flag is out and the race begins (9:26-11:52). Highlights of the race follow, with A.J. Foyt, Bobby Unser, and Johnny Rutherford battling it out. Mario Andretti’s car, sponsored by Viceroy, is having issues at the pit stop. An accident causes the yellow flag to be used and the leaders take advantage of their pits (11:54-15:00). Tom Sneva survives a fiery crash, shown in slow motion. The drivers are forced to drive through the grass to avoid car parts. Again, the leaders take advantage of filling up on gas (an Ashland tank is shown). Gary Bettenhausen’s blows a right rear hub and expertly keeps the three-wheeled car on the track until he can pull off safely into the grass (15:02-19:50). The storm hits and the crowd scrambles to cover themselves during the downpour. Visibility on the track is reduced to a few hundred yards. They create rooster-tails as they round the curves and some spin-out. The race is called early and Unser is given the checkered flag (19:52-21:59). The cars are in place at the start of the Shaffer 500 at Pocono, delayed due to rain. The pit crews sit under tarps at the cars. The pace car moves and the race begins. The track has different banks at each turn. Highlights of the race are shown. Rutherford’s pit stop is shown. A car lays a smoke screen for driver’s behind it. The Sneva team car has problems. Rain causes the pace car to take the track (22:00-26:54). The green flag is waved. Gordan Johncock hits the wall. The yellow flag remains out due to a fire truck stuck in the center field mud. The crowd covers for a new downpour, which again causes the rain to be called. Foyt is declared the winner and the Triple Crown winner (26:56-29:33). People push their cars out of the mud fields, including a 1975 Plymouth Duster and a 1975 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon (29:34-30:04).

The 1970's as well as the two decades before (1960's & '50's) are my favorites in the Indy Car series that had been sanctioned primarily by U.S.A.C. ( United States Auto Club) . The 1975 year for was a favorite. Three drivers held my main interest: A. J., Bobby Unser & Johnny Rutherford with Foyt and Rutherford finishing well that year in # 1 & 2 positions. The "Triple Crown" main events were always of great importance to the fans. It literally cemented the history of greatness for a driver the rest of his life. With the three men I mention as 1975 favorites, as of now ( Thanksgiving 2020), all are still around and in their 80's. The greatest still, without a doubt, is "SuperTex" Foyt. His record of 67 wins in Indy design racing may...or may not be broken. The Indy Car Champ several times, Scott Dixon, of New Zealand, has been on a mission to be the "best" in the open wheel racing of Indy car. You know...he might just do that in a couple of years. He's surpassed Mario Andretti's wins and Andretti will always be considered one of the world's top talented drivers of our era. It's too bad that the Ontario track didn't do well. I remember listening on the radio to the inaugural event in September, 1970. Texas Indy car veteran and winner of several races in his lifetime, Jim MacElreath won the first event in a Foyt owned Coyote (1969 model) with another good race driver, Art Pollard of Oregon coming in second. ( Art was a very nice guy who tragically lost his life at Indy in May, 1973) Well...to Periscope Films and the late, great Indy main track announcer, Tom Carnegie...Thanks for this 45 year old film production. It brings back good memories of one of my favorite years of my life!

This video is kind of bittersweet for me. Ontario was the last race my dad and I went to before he died on May 25th-the date they ran at Indy.

Cool to hear from someone who was actually at the Pocono race.We were there in 1987 when I was a teenager.Sounds like the mud was a mess but the Coke Lot behind Turn 4 at Indianapolis on the original rain out day in 1986 was probably worse.

Yeah, a few years ago everyone was talking about Alonso and the "Triple Crown" and I was like...Huh. I grew up in the 70's when Ontario, Indy and Pocono WAS the "Triple Crown". The reference to Indy, Monaco and LeMans as the Triple Crown is a 21st Century invention.

@@HODIUSDUDE Thatd be the only triple crown I can think of (maybe a daytona added in there as well, whether it's the 500 or the 24 hr race except it wouldn't be a triple lol) just short of a USAC triple crown, championships in midget, sprint and silver crown in one year.

Crazy. The original Triple Crown was and IS in horse racing.....but Indy, Michigan, Pocono and Ontario weren't too far off that. It was amazing and should have never gone away.

There was a rumor that Foyt cheated by having extra fuel in a fire extinguisher when he won Ontario.
