Ray Dalio warns of consequences from deepening inequality in America

Ray Dalio founded and manages the largest hedge fund in the world, Bridgewater Associates. He warns that if we don't reform capitalism to narrow the wealth gap in this country, we’ll not only see greater polarization, but also a worse economy for all.

    You must understand life is not fair. Working class is pretty much everyone except people on welfare or retired so your claim that working class is not paid enough to keep up with inflation is ridiculous because working class could be rich to poor. This concept is for computers and machines. They can be equal and fair lol. Its impossible for people to be equal because people are not equal. Some work harder than others. Some have more education than others. Some just seem to figure out success better than others. Of course upper management of giant corporations make good money. Younger generations need to understand you don't get out of school and expect to have the life of your parents right away. Its takes time to build a good life. Most people struggle until later in their careers. Its takes time and energy to get there. Nobody owes you equal pay to others that have put in their time. That is earned by hard work..

    This is Ronald Reagan's America. When he declared war on public education in the 1980s. as a Canadian who's traveled to the United States since the 80's on a few occasions, I have marveled at the lessening of educated speech patterns, and poor decision making that is more prevalent today than ever was before. There's a simple way of proving this, listen to news video clips of interviews with Americans in the 1980s and then compare it with today.

  • @kevj4584

    @kevj4584

    Agreed. There has been a gradual degradation of the American education system which started in the 80's and continues to this day. It always frustrates me to no end when I hear media figures discussing this as though it just spontaneously happened with no preliminary causes. If people read into US politics and actually go back to look at the legislation that has been passed over the past 50ish years, it becomes quite apparent that the de-funding was largely conceived to make the populace more susceptible to disinformation campaigns (along with other reasons, eg. retention of wealth by the rich, increased effectiveness of marketing campaigns for products, etc.). Interestingly, while many well intended people rightfully argue that the US needs to invest more money in all levels of education - I unfortunately think many underestimate the scope and nature of the problem. In my opinion as someone who's really interested in politics, I would argue the problem is not a linear one in which we simply have to reinvest the same amount (accounting for inflation) of money that has been diverted for all of these years, and then the situation will resolve itself. I would suggest that it is an exponential problem that will require more resources to correct the situation than has been withheld for decades. While I believe many politicians & power brokers think they can indefinitely puppeteer these situations with absolute control, it always ends up unraveling dangerously and Frankenstein's monster breaks loose. This is sadly what has historically and contemporaneously leads to societal instability and unrest - which America is clearly in no way experiencing right now... *rolls eyes* Frustratingly, this is a very common phenomenon in politics - the idea that by not preemptively acting to improve an issue before it degrades further, you effectively make it exponentially more difficult to fix once you finally do get around to a 'solution'. Whether it be student debt, the opioid epidemic, climate change/ecosystem collapse, the vanishing middle class/increased wealth disparity, reconciliation of native issues, systemic racial issues, etc...these exponentially worsening problems continue to happen again, and again, and again. As a non-American, it's rather sad to see a country with such immense potential utterly collapse in on itself. If anyone is interested in learning more about this, I strongly recommend Chomsky for a media analysis of the problem and Chris Hedges for more of a governmental analysis.

    It's more complicated than that. France's Monarchy was old as dirt and people were sick and tired of all the nobles at large. I mean Charlemagne I took power in 800 AD & France was pretty much formed as it is today by King Louis XI (nicknamed: the Spider) by the mid 15th Century. Louis XVI was a bad (very hesitant/undecisive) King who compromised too much and created confusion, including within the Army ranks. As a result, part of the Army joined the Revolutionary forces. The French ''Revolution'' was also, in part a Coup d'État. A lot of people forget that. France financed a substantial part of the American Revolution while also waging war with its neighbours so the Kingdom's finances were in the red. Pretty much all of Europe monarchies were doomed since the invention of prints and France had a prolific population of highly skilled writers, philosophers, comedians & satirists who were mercilessly attacking France nobles & the monarchy in particular. At the same time, some merchants became extraordinarily wealthy from overseas' commerce, hence they became more powerful than a large part of the country's nobility. Centuries of wars with England & Spain for the domination of the Seas and colonies all over the World on top of having powerful Central Europe enemies such as Austria and Germany was too much for such a small country (France was pretty much surrounded from a Geographic point of view) and to make it all worse, France had a few years of low agricultural yields and some avids speculators grabbing on food stocks which effectively created an exodus from the countryside and as a result a semi-famine in a city of Paris now filled to the brim with hungry people.

    Lawrence, they are already avoiding paying taxes. They store trillions of dollars in off shore bank accounts known as tax havens. This is no secret either. We can not live at the whim of the rich, or be threatened by the fact that they will leave. Where will they go? China? One thing we can do is back unions that can secure a safe retirement, pension, annuity, 401k, educational funds, health insurance, good wages, etc.

    This man was talking about how a country that didnt focus on education that makes everything into a fight between left and right could collapse into hard times with a breaking point like a pandemic. Clearly this news anchor either couldn't comprehend or didn't care and used his topic to push a narrative. He wasn't talking about current social inequalities and how we must do something. He tried to explain to her that the parties must stop fighting and come together to move this country forward on agreed issues. And what does she say? Maybe we should be thinking about reparations. Probably the most divisive issue between the two sides. That is not trying to come together and he didn't bite on the issue. How frustrating to have a conversation about the need for sides to come together and she suggests pushing the most divisive topic..

    @Piper Marie • What is even more cringe is watching and or hearing this man grope for words, going to umpteenth lengths to avoid saying the word , or anything specifically "racial". Or his referring to, (what we know) what he meant by "them", (black people), speaking as if he's talking about a species. He harkened back to the 1930's, & '40's, several times. He was, to some degree, speaking of the programs that created jobs etc., one must wonder is he even aware of the vast inequalities then, and is he even taking this into account, as we are currently backsliding to the same situation? I feel we Cannot even begin to correct these inequalities if we can't even "say" it, much less admit it. I'm not attesting that something/anything is owed anyone. But, I cannot see a path forward taking these extremely painful tiptoes through the vocabulary, as he seemingly did. I feel the reporter did try to speak to specifics, upon which he always deferred to speaking in generals.

    One of the greatest issues we have in the United States comes directly from the very high costs of higher education here in the US, in addition to our primary & secondary public schools failing to prep students to go on to higher education. We have, for far too long, depended on being to attract highly educated people from places like India, Japan, etc to fill our needs in too many fields. If we don't get high debt resulting from the high costs of education out of the equation, if we don't restructure our public education system & make sure our youth are ready, & able to either enter the workforce, or go on to schools of higher education, we will continue to fall behind countries like China that have place high value on the education & training of it's people.

    Every time there is an economic recession, a natural or man made disaster that causes people to lose jobs and fall into poverty those people either die off and the ones that don't die are lost into poverty and homelessness for the rest of their lives... People in their 40's, 50's, 60's 70's can't recover from an economic disaster!!!

    What about simply paying everyone a fair wage weather your male female black white native oriental or latino thats a good start. Next stop the racial bias in the legal system. If a black teen gets 10 to 20 years because the first time in life he was caught with a joint then the white boy gets the same treatment. And then make sure people are paid a fair wage and companies have a cap on profit so they can't raise the price of products so people can't afford them while the company gets rich off its workers labor with no bennifits to their work.

    What is this guy talking about productivity has gone up enormously last 20 years and wages have stagnated the corporations are getting massive amounts of enhanced production while paying the same thing for it for generations. The boom in the economy is the huge rise in profits made by companies... People aren't hurting because they are not working harder... They are hurting because they are working too much and gaining nothing from their extra productivity... Your average person gets nothing out of the corporations profits... The economy and the stock market are not proper or even realistic measures of a societies success.... The health, happiness and stability of its people are... Your average person even before the virus was not doing well at all.

    " productivity has gone up enormously last 20 years"? No, no, why the hell would a Company pay Americans 25$ an hour and get sh*ty quality, when they can pay someone from, I don't know where pennies an hour. I grew up in Windsor Ontario, when NAFTA was signed, the ink wasn't even dry when Companies moved shop to Mexico. So what productivity are you talking about?

  • @hunnybadger442

    @it's negan yes it's called capital and that's what you use to bulid up a corporation as well as tech spending and infrastructure and investment what normal person has that and what kind of capital would a normal person posess... Your average worker lives in a currency based economy capital as a corporation use it is not practical... Education and training is personal capital... Your body is labor capital .... Your ideas are intellectual capital but you can't put any of that in a bank or even really set a monetary value to it that's why the corporations have the upper hand the capital that we have as individuals doesn't have any power behind it at one point it did those where unions thats why union busting has been such a high priority for corporatists

    @it's negan yes that's a mechanics shop and they have a busniess licence but what about a a grocery clerk or a teacher or a dog walker or McDonald's employee they don't own where they work they don't have tools beyond their minds and bodies yes some teachers buy thier own supplies which is b.s.... But you can incorporate yourself but if you don't have the influence money or power behind it you can stick a inc. At the end of your name and it doesn't change a thing corporations don't have power simply because they are a corporation they have it cuz the pay for it we don't need to incorporat ourselves we need unions and political influence and we can get that when we chose who we vote for but your average voter just keeps voting in the same old corporatist shills year after year..
