Ray Comfort Vs Neil deGrasse Tyson Is Adorable

Creationist Ray Comfort complained that Neil deGrasse Tyson had misrepresented the Bible.
The astrophysicist and host of Fox's "Cosmos" said recently that using the Bible as a scientific source was problematic, because no one had ever scientifically proven a theory based on scripture...

He's had his shtick debunked, to his face, repeatedly but it just goes in one ear, sails on through the clouds in his head, and out the other side. He slams evolution because, in his opinion, we can't observe it. Yet we can't observe Genesis. By his own standard, his belief is dismissed. And evolution has been observed. Not least of all because we have fossils.

    VideoAudioDisco09 I was actually asking donnycage to answer his own statement where he referred to 'a pancake' , but however...Of course this verse doesn't even imply that the bible is stating that the planet Earth is flat .This becomes clearer when we put it into context even by recognising the verse immediately prior to it which refers to the Moon. In fact Job 26 v 10 seems to be describing God's work in the aesthetic separation of the dark ( night sky ) from the light ( the circle being in fact the light reflecting Moon ) upon the water in the appearance of a reflection which will then obviously appear as a light coloured/tone circle upon the flat dark (because it is night-time) water . A pancake is actually 3 -dimensional whereas a reflection is truly flat . Even discounting verse 9 ,the separation of the light and the darkness is inferred to as being the horizon IE sky light ,waters dark in another translation (NIV) . Either way how can a circle upon the face of the waters possibly be referring to planet Earth ?

  • @donnycage

    @donnycage

    10 жыл бұрын

    TheHumbuckerboy Ironically a verse that many Christians erroneously try to use to claim the Bible promoted a round earth, actually demonstrates that the writers actually thought the earth was flat (and a circle). Isaiah 40:22, "It is He who sits above the circle of the earth". Circle of the earth, huh? lol... Ahh but let's keep reading, it gets better... "And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And *spreads them out like a tent to dwell in*." Tents cover flat surfaces... Not spheres. Very clearly the writer described the earth as a circle... (Hebrew word "chuwg", which literally means..... circle... Note, he could've used the word "duwr" [which is a better description for the REAL shape of the earth], but he didn't... ). And as we keep reading, we see that the author not only thought the earth was a circle, but also a *flat circle*... Oh still not convinced? Let's see what a different writer said about what form the earth took... Job 38:14 describes the earth "It takes on form like *clay under a seal*"... Wanna take a wild guess as to what shape clay under a seal looks like??? Drum roll please..... *a flat circle* (similar to a pancake).... If you don't believe me, go outside, grab some clay and mash it with a seal and tell me what shape it takes... So, sorry to burst your bubble, but your Bible was *not* inspired by an omniscient being. It was written by over 40 fallible authors... At that time, it was believed that the earth was a flat circle... Which, in their defense, is completely understandable, considering they look up and see the sun... a circle. They see the moon, another circle... a bunch of stars (tiny circles)... so naturally they would think the earth is also a circle (Not to mention, they could see the earth's shadow on the moon, and know it's a circle).... They just thought it was flat.... The writers merely adopted whatever the mainstream view (of the earth) was at the time their books / letters were written.

    According to the Bible (1 Kings 7:23) Pi (π ≈ 3.14159) is equal to 3: "And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about." The circumference of a circle is the diameter times Pi (π). But this verse say that a round molten sea has a diameter of 10 and a circumference of 30. According to the math if the diameter is 10 then the circumference should be around 31.41. This is an error of about 5%. Kids in the 3rd grade can measure better than this using their feet and string. This scripture is either wrong about a basic mathematical property or they had very bad measurement done. Either way this proves that the scripture is imperfect.

    What it proves is you no nothing about the period in which 1 Kings 7:23 in written in. Here is a link to explain what you don't understand. creation.com/does-the-bible-say-pi-equals-3 You are taking a modern measurement and apply it to an ancient text and then saying the text is wrong. The text is right for its day and that is the way you should read it. BTW there is no 'Kings' in the Bible. It is either 1 Kings or 2 Kings.

  • @charlietuba

    Steve R Okay, I made a minor error. But then so did you when you said ,"…you no nothing…" I at least know the difference between "KNOW" and "NO." What you were saying was a double negative. No nothing = That which is not nothing. In regard to this verse, I reference Chapter 33 of the book "A Slice of Pi" by Liz Strachan. There the author describes how a class of children drew a circle in the playground and measured it using their feet. They came up with a closer value of π than King Solomon. If you are saying that this is close enough, then would you be willing to fly in a plane where there might be an error of 5%? The creation story (stories) were written by early simple people who knew little of science. From Wikipedia: The earliest written approximations of π are found in Egypt and Babylon, both within 1 percent of the true value. In Babylon, a clay tablet dated 1900-1600 BC has a geometrical statement that, by implication, treats π as 25/8 = 3.1250. In Egypt, the Rhind Papyrus, dated around 1650 BC, but copied from a document dated to 1850 BC has a formula for the area of a circle that treats π as (16/9)2 ≈ 3.1605.

    C.S. Ewens Simple, we live within a time continuum. Where the Bible says "God created the heavens and the earth" How much of this does man understand? Just before this it says, "In the beginning God" This shows us that before there was anything God already existed. How is this possible? Where did God come from? How did he create? I have no idea and neither does anyone else. Because we live in time and cannot fathom anything outside of time. In fact everything we understand has to do with time. I imagine for God to tell us about all he knows would be like us explaining the internet to an ant.

    Hey, Secular Talk. I'm an aethist myself, and I agree with the point you're making. But just wanted to correct you a little as you seem to mis-understand Hinduism (as do most Hindus btw). You mentioned the Bhagvat Geeta (a Hindu text) and said it was the word of god, and made the circular logic example. Here's the thing. The Bhagvat Geeta actually does NOT claim to be the word of God. In fact, there is no Hindu text that claims to be the word of God. I can do a longer chat some time later about the weirdness that is Hinduism. But just know this. Hinduism is primarily 7 separate philosophies. 2 out of those, specifically deny the existance of God. These two philosophies are called Vedanta. (the last a is an uh, not aah.) The way they differ is their opinion on destiny vs free-will. One believes in free-will, while the other views the universe more like a maths equation, where everything is determinate. Budhism and Jainism, also considered to be Hindu philosophies, were both started by Hindu philosophers. One explicitly denied the existence of God, and the other made no mention of it. They did talk about rebirth though. Now the primary scripture/books for Hindus are the 4 vedas (tha A rule applies here as well : uh, aah). The first books clearly mentions that man made God. It goes on to talk about levels of worship, where idol-worship is down at the bottom, meditation somewhere in the middle, and aethism is considered to be the highest level of worship. Essentially you could say that Hindu texts actually give multiple versions of the same philosophy for people with different levels of intellect.

    Disclaimer - I'm not a Christian Job 26:7 "He stretches out the north over empty space And hangs the earth on nothing." ~ Job understood the idea that the earth is suspended in space. Job 26:10 "He described a circle upon the face of the waters, until the day and night come to an end." ~ Job also understood the movement of the sun and moon in circular patterns. Isaiah 40:21 & 22 "Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in." ~ Isaiah understood that God sits above the "circle of the earth" or as could be translated "globe" Proverbs 8:27 "When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep," ~ The word circle here is translated from a phrase that is applied to the curvature of the horizon when on the open ocean. This is the same physical evidence used by the greeks some 1,000 years later to make their own observations about a round earth.

    Even in Isaiah 40:21 and 22 you cherry pick out of a passage when the other part of the passage contradicts it. Sits above the circle of the earth? If the earth is a globe as you say and not a circle, how does God sit "above" it? What is above? Direction is all relative in the universe. And then, God "stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in." According to this passage the sky is spread out OVER the earth like a tent, which means the earth is flat. Even your INCORRECT attempt at cherry picking a passage disproves your own point.

    ...and? ***** Every generalized prophecy can be looked at in a way that gives it some basis in reality. The Hopi Indian elders made a prophecy that predicted the end of the world via gourds of ashes that would fall from the air, boil the oceans, "make people like blades of grass in the prairie fire" and spread a poisonous fire that would prevent living things from growing for generations. This end would be preceded by nine signs: “The Fourth World shall end soon, and the Fifth World will begin. This the elders everywhere know. The Signs over many years have been fulfilled, and so few are left. “This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder. [Guns] “This is the Second Sign:Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes - the white men bringing their families in wagons across the prairies.” [pioneers’ covered wagons] “This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns will overrun the land in large numbers. These White Feather saw with his eyes - the coming of the white men’s cattle.” [longhorn cattle] “This is the Fourth Sign:The land will be crossed by snakes of iron.” [Railroad tracks] “This is the Fifth Sign:The land shall be crisscrossed by a giant spider’s web.”[the internet, electric power and telephone lines] “This is the Sixth sign:The land shall be crisscrossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun.” [highways] “This is the Seventh Sign:You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.” [oil spills in the ocean] “This is the Eight Sign:You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom. [Hippies]. “And this is the Ninth and Last Sign:You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease. [the U.S. Space Station Skylab falling to Earth in 1979] Never mind this, the eventual conflict is supposed to occur with the people to the east who first controlled fire (IE. the people who live in the fertile crescent region--the middle east) If I were a superstitions man, I would say that the Hopi prophecies have smoked the Christian ones in terms of accuracy--they even listed the signs in chronological order and managed to theorize the one currently realistic way that humans could end the world, nearly a century before it was developed.

Until there is sufficient evidence we must logically stay with the default position that a god does not exist. Simply because I am not claiming there is no god, does not mean a god exists.

No, again I made no claims. Simply because I was wrong, does not mean I made any claims. You might want to take a logic 101 class. The denial of a claim is not a claim, it is the opposite of a claim. Is that where you are getting confused?

    I think the Bible is more of a collection of different accounts of the Jewish peoples. For example, the Old Testament is mostly taken from the Jewish holy book, the Torah. The OT uses alot of metaphors like "The Lord delivered victory unto the Israelites" or "The Lord hath forsaken its own people" to serve as a reasoning as to why the Israelites won or lost battles. The Israelites killed millions of people in order to carve out their empire of Israel thousands of years ago. There is scripture in the Bible of Jews bashing the heads of heathen infants against the walls and destroying everything within a city, even livestock so that that city cannot be inhabited again. The level of cruelty the Jewish people inflicted on neighboring tribes would have made "God" regret it's actions of creating humans. The fact that God did not intervene back then to the thousands of people being killed and their deaths being justified by the Israelites as God's will to give the Israelites their promised land is proof that the God of the Bible is not a God of love and compassion as stated by Jesus. Don't get me wrong. The message of Jesus is inspirational and I take his message of love and toleration to heart, but I don't believe that I will go to heaven because of what I believe in but based on how kind and helpful I can be to other people on earth. If I die and nothing happens, so be it. If I die and go to hell not because I tried my best to do good but because I didn't believe in God, then God is not a loving or compassionate God as the Bible states.

    There shouldn't be a vote. It should be a clearly structured debate that presents each side's case for topics (e.g. evolution, morality etc.) in a way that the audience is not confused or mis-led or tricked and each speaker is not interrupted when talking. For example: Evolution: Scientific evidence for = X Religious evidence against = Y If it's structured correctly then an outsider to the debate can clearly make their mind up without the baggage of preaching or deception. Nye and Ham's debate is the closest so far to it

    Mike Bond Not really it's atheist who are totally irrational. A simple question atheist can't not answer, what have you ever seen in your life on earth that has created itself from nothing? If you have never seen that, then how is it rational for you to believe that the universe created itself? See atheist become upset because they say christians believe in something nobody has ever seen, yet atheist claim that the universe is self creating. Science only proves that the universe is quantifiable. If something is quantifiable that means there is a pattern. Whenever you see a pattern, there must be a train of though behind it. We see that at the human level (fashion trends, family issues, gangs, cultures, etc) There must be an intelligent mind behind it. Before you ask who created God, I say God is eternal. Let's be clear, the element of eternity is a fact. Either time/existence is eternal or there is a supreme being. Using the knowledge we observe here on earth, the fact that everything we see is birthed from something greater than itself, what is more rational? What is more rational, to believe we come from a superior being, or that some time ago, a single celled organism comes into existence on the right planet, the right time, at the perfect distance from the sun. This single celled organism wold later become self-aware, design for itself clothing, food, weaponry, technology, and educational systems all from the materials from the earth its on....Seems like a stretch to me

  • @BSmitty4rm8Fitty

    @BSmitty4rm8Fitty

    9 жыл бұрын

    1.) There is no physical evidence of particles doing that and that theory is contested often so that isn't going to work unless you can link me some proof. 2) Eternity is a fact. Nothingness is impossible. Time/existence is eternal. The question was at one point whether or not the universe was eternal. That is over because the Big Bang proves a beginning and the "heat death" is the ending. (Kinda strange the Bible says the Earth will be taken down by fire) 3)The new tree owes it existence from where it originated. The old tree, whether or not the animal consumed the tree, the fruit would have fallen off, degraded into the ground and probably sprung up a new plant depending on what exactly it is. Point is, the seed didn't create itself, nor did it just pop into existence 4.) Your last statement had nothing to do with facts, but was totally emotional. You saying if God can do that, then anything can happen. Seeing how you don't believe in God, then that means anything can't happen which means you just negated your statement. Who is it that you choose to follow? A world that constantly tells you that you don't measure up to their standards. The same world that advertises liquor during family programming yet it's responsible for over 90% of crimes committed. A world who has imprisoned and killed more of its inhabitants this past century than all of recorded history combined? You keep telling yourself religion is the problem or that God is some type of tyrant and the world has better to offer...It doesn't. Don't get me wrong, their is beauty and many wonderful things about it, but facts are facts

  • @mikeb512

    @mikeb512

    Brandon Smith"...then how is it rational for you to believe that the universe created itself?" Well first of all, the only people who believe that statement are Creationists like you, Ray Comfort, Ken Hamm, etc, in that you are grossly oversimplifying and misinterpreting the big bang theory into something nonsensical and illogical at it's most basic level. Whether this is on purpose to cast a better light on the Bibles mythical attempts to explain everything, or it is merely sheer ignorance because you truly don't know what you're talking about, I don't know. What I do know is that this is yet another classic example of those double standards that you religious types seem to be so fond of. You ask why we can believe as ridiculous as the entire universe being born out of nothing in a single instant, yet have no issues whatsoever believing essentially the same thing about a god. Where did he/she/it come from? Surely they could not simply flashed into existence from nowhere and out of nothing? That's not possible (and save your "god is eternal" bullshit, it's a cop out and you know it). I mean, it *literally* is not though, as opposed to the poorly understood summary that religious zealots so often parrot at us because they think they've really got a stumper for us atheists. I also have a really hard time understanding why Creationists insist on assuming that all things that exist simply *must* have a personified creator of some kind behind it. Why is this? To see a tree, or a river, or another galaxy and immediately claim with absolute certainty that you *know* who "made" it, or "put" it there is one of the flimsiest arguments I've ever heard, and that's saying something when it comes to this topic! Again, what is it that fuels your confidence in being completely right about this conclusion you've arrived at? One of the reasons I've heard on occasion is if, for example, I see a painting in a museum, I would have to know that the painting did not simply appear out of thin air, because we all *know* that paintings are created by someone. Of course, this can easily be seen as the logical conclusion that it is because just like everything else we believe in, there is scores of evidence backing this up? Why do we know a creator of some kind was involved? Because we've observed painters creating paintings before, and have never observed on simply appear from nowhere. So I ask you, why are you assuming some intelligent being has created everything? You certainly haven't observed a mountain range rise up from the ground...they were there long before you were born, and remain long after you die, so how is your assumed creator rational in any way?
