Steven Hawkins is certainly up there for the greatest mind of this century. I love Elon and I like how he gives credit where credit is due. If you think about the pursuit of space exploration, it really is the pursuit of understanding physics and the laws of nature, and just incredible feats of engineering. Aside from my curiosity and wanting to see if there is life beyond Earth, lots of NASA research has given us luxuries that we know today. NASA has helped us understand climate change better and the impact of what we are doing to our planet. If we can study other planets as well, we can better understand our own. Other examples of benefits we gain include LASIK eye surgery, solar energy, fire resistant material that our firefighters use today, artificial limbs, the MRI machines we use today in our hospitals, etc etc. The list goes on and on. Furthermore, humans have always yearned to explore, to find out whats beyond. Aside from just understanding science better, I think it's a noble thing to want to learn how our universe works, and going beyond Earth will be critical. Imagine if early European explorers looked across the Atlantic Ocean and said, meh, not worth it.

Normally someone asks him a question.... then he pauses and finds the answer.... then he will be like "uhh so AI is...." then he pauses and stumbles again while he is dumbing down the answer for the interviewer ormal people to understand. This is normal Elon as i see him. In this interview.... he just looked like a bumbling mess and never really directly answered questions. Such as This is the abridged version but watch this video again.... this really is how the conversation flows. Q: "So what are some of your processes\management advice\tricks." A: "We need sustainable rockets and we have to get to Mars." Seriously? wtf! The dude is truly an asset to this country. I really hope whatever was wrong with him at this interview isnt his new normal.

I'd say he hesitates a lot when he speaks because he has such a huge amount of knowledge, and so much going through his head at once. He's probably got a dozen things going on in his mind while doing this interview.

I love the analogies Elon Musk makes when he explains things - it's obvious how smart he is when he can explain such complex things in a manner that is accessible to anyone. High contrast to the interviewer's questions which sound more complicated lol.

Not being able to turn off some music shows just how far we have to go.

He chooses his words very carefully. When talking about outcome, he specifically means outcome and not output... It is a distinction which is lost on most, it was on me until not too long ago. Outcome means goal, intent and a strategy, output meams a lack of strategy or at least the risk of a disconnect between strategy and the translation into actionable items. Hearing him talk he is the living breathing poster child for congruent thought and behavior. Impressive.

Shout out to the interviewer. Elon is not an easy guy to interview. Even Joe Rogan said after Elon was on his podcast he was one of the hardest guys to interview. I thought this interviewer asked very clear questions and allowed Elon to expand on each question.

It's really really useful when the people doing your design also know about manufacturing systems so they intentionally make things manufacturable from the beginning.

100% As someone who works in manufacturing it is very important to have an open line of communication between your engineering department and your manufacturing experts. There can often be a disconnect between these two lines of thinking. When an engineer is designing something new, they do not always know the how easy or hard it is to manufacture the different various components he has added to his design or how easy or hard it is to obtain the materials he has decided to use. More experienced engineers who have a history of working with manufacturing experts can get better at this but there needs to be an open line of communication with engineers doing R&D and your welding, machining, assembly, & material procurement experts. As Elon said, it is infinitely harder to design the "machine" that builds the machine. Perfecting your manufacturing process is the real challenge.

As someone who designs his own products, I find I do much more thinking about the machines to make the product, and how to do it in fewer steps, and to absolutely simplify final design. Refining to simple takes time, lots of prototypes.

Elon pioneers a lot of future and forward thinking for society. This is what the US needs, more so in the world. A lot of his endeavors were for man-kind and a true vision beyond the issues we currently face. I hope there are gonna be more people like him in society.

I really benefitted from this interview/symposium. I have always loved the airforce/armed forces. I'm in total agreement of the necessity of being #1. The USA has always been a fight for peace force. If the USA does not retain this status/position they will become a victim of a dictatorship. Noone will be left to save the weak and vulnerable we will become the weak and vulerable. Stay strong and smart America. We need more Elon's...we need our smartest and strongest armed forces. Keep the high tech and innovation above and beyond...keep us surrounded with the best and brightest for the hightest outcome. We need the critical thinkers and problem solvers. We need to stay smart and strong...and appreciate smooth jazz😄

It is incredible how even now, when we talk about going to other planets, we still think in terms of a polarized world, of Americans versus other power poles, as usual. Instead of coming together as a species and combining our efforts and ideas, we still hope to export our wars, hatred and power struggle to the rest of the universe. No matter how big the technological progress, as long as the ego will prevail, as long as we will not learn empathy and respect for the others members of our species and for other species, humans will remain fundamentally dumb.

It's not wrong to be idealistic, but we also have to take into consideration that for example the communist party of China's ideals are not the same as yours. China's foreign policy is only becoming more and more aggressive as its power is growing and we have to be realistic about that or they will continue to take advantage in every way.

We have to get rid of possessive behavior ,it's for all of us always to share,that would be progress,it's not present! ..on and on! part of human nature to define others to define yourself, there you go, us and them,. It becomes addictive and a easy way out for a troubled mind, its gathering the society ( tribe) around a story/goal, releasing big comfort for some, and direction for the acting/progressive. So the most gathering for all earth humans to happen is finding intelligent life in space. Climate crisis is not gonna do it, its also a fight.. Elon might think, just going into space can do it. Its a heavy, ressource consuming activity for the limited. Compared to 1bn on earth doesn`t have toilets. Plain toilets. How about that. Lots of people have no light in there “houses” , even in daytime. but a spaceship, hell yeah, just gettin there

Great questions directed to Mr Musk, in fact it's the fist time I've seen well directed questions to gain an insight into processes of innovation. It had to be the Air Force Association who obviously survives through innovation. Thank You.

How he turns those great ideas into reality and make them work at the minimal cost of production is just amazing. We all have great ideas, but how we can make them real is hard. He is great example for everyone. He has great dreams for humanity's future. Although he is very rich now, I think that was not his primary goal. It just happens because his ideas worked.

I used to think a President of the United States was an American Hero worthy of looking up to, but in reality..it's ELON

I could sit and talk with Elon for years and enjoy his mind the whole time.

Two great men - great to see commanders understanding the business space too.

Hard for him to slow the verbal expression of the thoughts of a gifted powerful brain to a normal speed. His disposition and His humbleness is admirable and so is his love for the US.

He doesn't need an introduction. all man should know him...

Amazing interview with very informative stuff!

I have to hand it to General Thompson for really steering the conversation and being able to simplify Elon's somewhat technical answers at times to well meaningful questions within the context of the conversation.

The fact that he's doing this for humanity is amazing. A lot of this stuff will never benefit him in this lifetime yet he is improving the functionality of the entire world for generations to come. It's a selfless act. In my opinion. Pretty amazing.

Beautiful person. Honest and smart. Good heart. Even his innocent looking child-like mannerisms are wonderful. No angle but a direct angle. Elon is a God-send.

Is there a transcript of this anywhere? Musk's comments on innovation and failure here are pretty standard for him, but how he articulates the principles here is pretty effective and unique.

I mean Elon is right unmanned drones in the future would probably be well developed enough to take down these fighter jets and at a fraction of the price with no risk to the controller flying it.

Now count the billions of dollars invested in technology that can now be taken out by a rig built in some guys basement. The answer is in democratizing access to ideas, eradication of extreme poverty - we don't want to go too far.

Being an Indian I believe in him and he is working restless to achieve his dreams and that is the biggest motivation one can get. I believe he will make a colony on Mars coz he looks so determined working on his dreams. He said the right thing once America is the land of opportunities regardless out race, cast and religion. Love and support from India 💞

Elon is a great guy, I do feel he is slightly autistic...very evident when he speaks and that has helped him capture information and retain it. it’s a type of hyper focus. He really gives you exactly what he’s thinking. Wonderful guy.
