Raw Craft with Anthony Bourdain - Episode Seven: Elizabeth Brim
Fresh off a minor jiu-jitsu ear injury, Anthony Bourdain & The Balvenie head to Penland, North Carolina to meet with Elizabeth Brim, master metalsmith and instructor at the Penland School of Crafts. Brim is one-of-a-kind in the industry and her work is noted for the creation of traditionally feminine objects created from iron. In this episode, Brim introduces an original method she developed for inflating metal. Each of her works contain hours of detailed labor to achieve end results that will last a lifetime. Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer.
The Balvenie Distillery alliance with craft is a result of the brand’s choice to embrace the old way. Balvenie is dedicated to the process of using the five rare crafts of Scotch whisky making to create The Balvenie’s distinctive taste and exceptional quality. It is the only distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional malting floor, employs coopers to tend every cask, a coppersmith to maintain the stills and a malt master to ensure the resulting spirit is consistently excellent.

What an awesome woman. Quoting 2Pac and wearing pearls while blacksmithing. And Anthony ending the video with talking about how she is a woman to look up to for his young daughter. Heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. May he be resting in peace now.
"The princesses can party forever." That's a pretty damn good line.
I honestly miss your existence in this world, Tony I wish there were more of you today. Rest in peace :(
THIS is the show I recommend when introducing folks to Anthony Bourdain. Elizabeth Brim's soulful conversation, sensitive work, bond with students, is all wonderful - and Bourdain knows to just let it run with a minimum of interruption and an inspired narrative. She's a gracious pro, sharing her talents and skills, inspiring others.
Quoting TuPac... she's amazing.

its so cool to see such a removed perspective of him and those times as well like she holds no bias towards either situation she just saw him for who he was
If there was no Anthony, we would not know about those wonderful People.. So thankful
I have heard and read a lot about Tupac and Biggie. I believe this was the first time I have heard someone refer to their beef as "quarreling". How sweet!

Elizabeth is an amazing woman and artist. We first met her in 2015 at both Fire on the Mountain blacksmith festival in Spruce Pine (down the road from Penland) and then afterwards at Penland School of Arts. I have always loved her ability to create interpretations of items that are delicate. She is just as wonderful in person as seen in this.
The inflated metal is something I've never seen before and was pretty interesting since I've been around metal work most of my life. Definitely an amazing woman
Rewatching this series because there’s no one that could tell a story like Tony!
he has left us knowledge of wonderful people doing wonderful things - what a great gift, delivered in such a cool and humble way with an incredibly beautiful voice.
Live this woman! She's a G. We miss you Anthony!
Tupac, blacksmithing flowers. Life.
Blacksmithing in a string of pearls. Amazing. "I wish I could be a thug." - raises bandana over face. That inflation technique of red hot metal is uber cool but looks dangerous as feck mixing compressed air with super heated metal, especially with no barrier between yourself & the work.
Elizabeth is why I love the "art" of blacksmithing. Just the right balance between brute force and delicate artistry.
This series nearly brings me to tears every episode, with the passion and Raw dedication that these creators bring to their craft, it fills me with Joy! Keep up the Great work.
Great effing story! Elizabeth is awesome... Thank you for bringing her to light!
TUPAC mah man! Inspiring people even after his death. RIP This lady is just plain BADASS!

I love this woman. A beyond middle-aged, female metalsmith and hip-hop fan?! Hell yeah!
I am such a fan of Bourdain's. To have him do this new series is extraordinary. Now adding Elizabeth Brim's story, and Penland, is such a huge boost to the fine craft movement. Hooray Anthony ... makes sense to me! What a great educator you are!
What an absolutely beautiful woman; inside and out. Her passion is addictive and flows right though her work and to her students. Stunning!!! Love this series, thank you Mr. Bourdain

Fantastic Blacksmith Artist! Thank you for introducing this extremely talented woman to us!
Word. This is the best series of promotional content, ever.
This woman is amazing! Her strength, to cast off the pressures keeping her in a traditional homemaker role, and to go on and fully support herself and then start offering inspiration to others, is just amazing! and the inflating metal was metal!
I'm so glad I got to watch this.......
Wow this series is so underrated. Absolutely awesome biopic type episodes that are such great showcases of each individual and their craft. If I could afford Balvenie on a college budget I would get a case just to show appreciation! Thanks guys!
She's a badass. What an awesome lady! a creative that refuse to leave the place that inspires her. i absolutely identify with that. I want one of those Penland shirts!
I really do miss him, just a genuine person who was really well liked. The impact he had across many different fields. Mental Health needs more investment. The world needs more like him

It's so weird to see Anthony Bourdain walking around my hometown.
So beautiful.
Those last few words by Anthony hit hard
Is it possible to dislike this lady? I don't think so.
Dude that comment about hoe he hopes his daughter to be a badass like Elizabeth gutted me. I’m off to cry ugly.
This lady is awesome.
Certainly something to be said for strong independent self reliant women. I was raised by one along with 3 other siblings. Hat off to you ladies.
