Raw Craft with Anthony Bourdain - Episode Seven: Elizabeth Brim

Fresh off a minor jiu-jitsu ear injury, Anthony Bourdain & The Balvenie head to Penland, North Carolina to meet with Elizabeth Brim, master metalsmith and instructor at the Penland School of Crafts. Brim is one-of-a-kind in the industry and her work is noted for the creation of traditionally feminine objects created from iron. In this episode, Brim introduces an original method she developed for inflating metal. Each of her works contain hours of detailed labor to achieve end results that will last a lifetime. Episode directed by filmmaker Rob Meyer.
The Balvenie Distillery alliance with craft is a result of the brand’s choice to embrace the old way. Balvenie is dedicated to the process of using the five rare crafts of Scotch whisky making to create The Balvenie’s distinctive taste and exceptional quality. It is the only distillery that still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional malting floor, employs coopers to tend every cask, a coppersmith to maintain the stills and a malt master to ensure the resulting spirit is consistently excellent.
Warehouse 24 offers its members access to exclusive events, early notice of new product releases and insight & knowledge from The Balvenie’s team of craftsmen. Join here: us.thebalvenie.com/warehouse2....

What an awesome woman. Quoting 2Pac and wearing pearls while blacksmithing. And Anthony ending the video with talking about how she is a woman to look up to for his young daughter. Heartbreaking and beautiful all at once. May he be resting in peace now.

THIS is the show I recommend when introducing folks to Anthony Bourdain. Elizabeth Brim's soulful conversation, sensitive work, bond with students, is all wonderful - and Bourdain knows to just let it run with a minimum of interruption and an inspired narrative. She's a gracious pro, sharing her talents and skills, inspiring others.

Elizabeth is an amazing woman and artist. We first met her in 2015 at both Fire on the Mountain blacksmith festival in Spruce Pine (down the road from Penland) and then afterwards at Penland School of Arts. I have always loved her ability to create interpretations of items that are delicate. She is just as wonderful in person as seen in this.

Blacksmithing in a string of pearls. Amazing. "I wish I could be a thug." - raises bandana over face. That inflation technique of red hot metal is uber cool but looks dangerous as feck mixing compressed air with super heated metal, especially with no barrier between yourself & the work.
