Ravine Flyer II History & Review - Waldameer Gravity Group Wooden Coaster

When there's a sequel, it's usually worth it to check out the previous installment first. Waldameer's premiere wooden coaster had a long road to travel before becoming a reality. To get the whole story, we have to go back 100 years for a look at the mysterious Ravine Flyer 1, a coaster shrouded in secrecy due to a lack of documentation and an unfortunate accident that led to its closure. The result of 70 years of planning was a wooden hybrid coaster that put Waldameer back on the map for coaster enthusiasts. Ravine Flyer II should not be missed.

I grew up with Waldameer essentially in my backyard (just 15 minutes from my front door). I spent the vast majority of my childhood summers in the park. Ravine Flyer 2 was my first non-kiddie coaster, with my first ride about 2 weeks after it first opened. It sparked a love for coasters and amusement parks in me. Now, Kennywood is my home park, which has it's collection of great coasters, but it just doesn't stratch the same itch that Waldameer and Ravine Flyer 2 do. I actually just rode Ravine Flyer 2 today 😂

Excellent overview of my home park and Ravine Flyer II. The coaster is honestly getting better with age and I'm striving for 300 rides on it this year!

I love Ravine Flyer 2 and Waldameer. I try to get there at least once a summer. Kennywood is also my home park so I’m around an hour and a half away. The people at Waldameer take very good care of Ravine Flyer and that is especially good because of how aggressive it is. If it was any more rough it could be unbearable.

Just rode this bad puppy after 8 years, your exactly right about how it’s not bumpy but aggressive, I felt it was going 60 the day I was riding it, Memorial Day up here was warm so I figured it would be flying that day, outside of Kennywoods wooden coaster and the old gwazi at Busch gardens Tampa, this is the best wooden coaster I have rode

I got my first ride on ravine flyer II with no knowledge of anything about it, I was shocked at how awesome it was. I was laughing the whole time

What many don’t know is that the original Ravine Flyer’s station is still at this park as it got a new life as a picnic pavilion and still exists today.

I live in Erie and I used to go every summer and I made sure I rode that ride at least once. And I like the sea dragon and the flying swings

If people describe Ravine Flyer II as mini Voyage, I'm terrified of what Voyage is like. I remember one ride I got on RF2 in the back seat and I couldn't tighten my seatbelt all the way so it was pretty loose, and I was absolutely flying over each hill. Riding towards the later part of the day when the sun is going down was a cool experience as well, you can really feel that chill from Lake Erie when you crest the lift hill. I've also been to the trailer park that's right next to the ride, and it is LOUD from there. You get some excellent views of the drop and the back to back tunnels though.

I think this was my first big coaster. It was either Phantoms Revenge or this. Also about the noise complaints, yeah the ride is like the loudest thing ever.

Really wanna try this thing next year. I checked out Boardwalk Bullet in 2021, and I was extremely impressed. Top 10 coaster easy. It's just a shame that it's all the way out on the other side of the state from me!

That's how I feel about visiting Dorney and Sesame Place. They're on my list for sure, but they're an entire drive across the state for me!

@@RampagingRex They're cool places... I don't find myself visiting them often. Dorney really only has Steel Force and Demon Drop for me. Other than that, I don't think anything special of Dorney anymore. Sesame place on the other hand is held back by a ton of problems including the following: -Annoying branding -No good flat rides besides teacups -WAY too expensive compared to it's competition -Heavy competition with Dutch Wonderland (more to do and better balanced) and Storybook Land (more authentic, more charm, elite kiddie coaster), both of which I consider better -Is a glorified family water park with a Vekoma junior coaster and GG family woodie (which probably shouldn't have been installed in the first place) I'd trade both parks for Waldameer the same way I'd trade Tidal Wave for Boardwalk Bullet.

Great wooden coaster other than that one jarring pothole towards the end that jack hammers your entire soul for a split second
