After KZread comments on the first restoration of my dad's ratchet screwdriver I decided to take their advice and have another go at the barrel.

Steel, brass & wood. Can't beat it!
Now we're talking! Your screwdriver looks much happier. Best regards
Of course you are the only person who can decide what is best for a tool you are restoring. But since you asked, polished brass would be my choice as well. Looks good.
I think it looks much better as polished brass! You did a great job :)
Brass looks great chief ! We’ll done !
Great idea to have another go at it. I also learn a lot from folks watching my work - there are many people who kindly share their expertise. Nice outcome.
It looks a lot better 👍 good idea thanks for sharing your time and remember stay safe and make 🍺🍺👍👍
Nice re-restoration mate. I would never paint over brass. What’s not to like about polished brass? Glad you shared that with us. 👍🇦🇺

Cheers mate, my mistake was trying to replicate the original look after mistakenly polishing off the chrome. I now know better and will never paint over brass again...
I liked your job👍
It looks far better with the polished brass. The paint looked dull, and artificial, up against the other parts that you had already cleaned & polished. Also, the paint looked like the same kind of stuff that my mum used to spray on our plastic Christmas tree, to make it look more festive. That said... it's your screwdriver. Go with the finish you prefer.
Back when they were making tools then they thought it made them look modern by chrome plating them rather than the older brass furniture look, yes at the time people fell for this so called advanced look but over time some wanted the old look and some polished to chrome off and some did this when it flaked off as a few tools were plated thinly. I would of been one that removed it too!

Cool, so the fact I messed up and polished it off by accident all worked out right in the end! I do agee though, the honest brass look I think works so much better and blends in much better with the wood.
