One thing I love about Ratatat is the uncanny ability to make a song with a highly individual meaning without putting a single lyric to it. It means what it means to each of us.

I love this song so much. I cry every time I hear it. Right after 3:35, I can feel tears begin to form. It's not a happy thing, or a sad thing. It's just so much emotion from one song. I've never had it happen to me before. It's such a beautiful thing.

In 2013, "Cherry" was the song my daughter and future son-in-law chose for their wedding procession song. Their core friends (at first surprised) all started grinning, and the older generation (older than me, that is) looked confused and frightened. So, definitely a win-win. The bride entered at the beginning of the crescendo (3:35).

This song has such fantastically ecstatic flow and buildup. I’ve always imagined the music before 3:36 to be the journey, and then the music that they drop at that point to be like, getting to heaven, or discovering Atlantis, or landing on a foreign world with an entirely vast and unfathomably serene and breathtaking landscape and environment. Or maybe being reunited with a long lost loved one you’ve been searching for for most of your life. Thank you Ratatat - you’ve made so many times better and more beautiful for me over the years.

I love how everyone gets something different from the song, but near everyone feels the both happy and sad feeling. It's funny, I always got the happy feeling before but only felt the sad today. Maybe it's cause I'm growing up slowly but surely, but man, the image at the end just reminds me of my band and how it started and how god awful we were when we started, but towards the end we got pretty ok. But whenever we were on stage together, we'd make poses exactly like the end of the video, and in that moment it'd be exactly how we felt. Just completely in our element, totally relaxed, loving every second of life Man I miss those days

It always felt as though it would take forever but we would all sit in silence to be careful not to interrupt it. The song stimulates the memory to point where it becomes overwhelming. The beat is calm and slowly builds, making one think of a time when things were simple. When you were a child and all you thought about was cookies and naps, that can describe the beginning. Then as the tension builds you think of your teenage years and the madness that followed with friends and family. The climax brings about thoughts of becoming older and what maturity brought with it... All the emotions and the events...

I've always pictured this song to be someone on their deathbed. They reflect on their life and replay memories with fondness. Realizing how every matter seemed important, but it was really trivial. Thinking of the beauty of their life lived. Thankful for the love shared and time spent with family. The climax is the great realization and final goodbye. The fade out is accepting their fate and slowly letting go, releasing themselves and passing on.

To me this is a perfect deathbed song. We reflect on our life from sunrise to sunset. Along the journey we relive all of the triumphs and tragedies. This is a highly reflective song. It's very sad and very happy at the same time, if filled with regret can leave one feeling very mixed up inside, happy and thankful to remember and feel the good times, but also sad and heavy and dissappointed and upset with the mistakes I've made to hurt the good times.

this song is clearly about the dilemma between jubilation and euphoria. the dialectic rythm and the contrast of our daily entities are produced through this qualm but not leaving yourself hybridized. it is sad and dissapointing that we live through this on a daily basis but it's a pain to have the happy moments of our lives and have daily recollections of our thought out past. you can also tell by the colors in the end that life is a constant build up of defecation discharge and animosity and then a diametric outburst at the end of our minimal euphoric existence. but can you recall this existance when death is upon us? maybe yes but you must not know not with a vernacular substance. just kidding. I just shit these words out of my butt hole to show how smart I am.

This is pure emotion. It goes superbly with any memory of journey you've stored in your thoughts. For me, it's quebec in winter, walking knee-deep in the snow, hand in hand w/ my friend. And truth is, it never gets old. Rare enough to mention.

I used to live in a small town in Southern California called Cherry Valley. I discovered this song driving down the main road in/out of town, was so zen with the moment. To my left was a field of cows happily grazing in the foothills, on my right a LARGE freshly started under construction block housing complex. I shed a tear for the field, knowing the other side of the road with the cows will someday have the same fate. This song and that moment were grouped together in my brain. Every time I hear it I see those happy cows grazing in the sun. Alas this was any years ago, and now there is a LARGE block housing complex where those cows used to be. Progress :/

My dad has always played Ratatat when I was growing up, so buying these songs and listening to them for a first time in a while made me happy. I've imagined this song in my head when having my first kiss, during my first heartbreak, and I know I will hear it all the time in the future, also. Thank you, Ratatat, for making memories along with me.

The first time I heard this song was live; I was with some friends and people I didn't know that well. This was maybe 8-10 years ago in a cramped university club in St. Louis. I didn't really want to be there but was along for the ride. Whatever. About 3:35 I danced with the most beautiful woman in the room, and a drunkish commitment later meant the best 6 years of my life since, which I have regretted losing blah blah. I'm not here to preach. This is an amazing song that produces memories and feeling and dare I say it some hope. I miss every second of it. ~ cheers

+Israel Aviña I agree. In my experience this song opens me to all of the repressed pain of humanity, which at times has brought me to contemplate similarly as you have. But there is no void behind the pain, just the simple bliss of a soothing lullaby, which in my opinion, is a metaphor for God's love for humanity, which man does not realize, because of all of the painful karma he clings to.

Sanjana Ahmed Cherry is the best feeling ever. If we all got together and decided that Cherry is the new religion everybody would be very good. Instead of making war, somebody will step up, and say, "Hold on, let's make Cherry" , and then everything will make sense from every point of view at once because everyone making Cherry is all about the journey to the heart of self. Hmmmmmm

This song brings me back and reminds me of my love for my family and how there is still a small bit of good, even if its just a baby sleeping on my chest while I listen. I don't know why this song calms me so. Thank you Ratatat.

For me, this entire song symbolizes the end of one age and the beginning of another, and that crescendo at 3:34 is where that transition occurs. I always picture it as me walking through a tunnel before the crescendo. I can hear this roaring, this swell of anticipation...and as I step out of that tunnel and into the bright lights, that crescendo hits, and I see this crowd around me. I feel their energy. And more than anything, I just want to yell, to roar like a lion. I’m walking to the cage/ring to fight. It’s this mesmerizing sequence I’ve constructed in my own mind, and it feels like a movie scene. I’m pretty emotionally-driven, so music like this gets to me...
