As a Pole, I don't even want to hear it. 99% of German war criminals calmly lived to old age in Germany, enjoying respect and often taking lucrative positions.

I fully understand you. And a lot of Polish freedomfighters didn't get the recognition they deserved while serving on Allied side as well. But let me tell you one thing.. My late grandmother always said, The Polish forces were among the bravest of all. She saw them fighting, from house to house, bajonets fixed, while for example the Canadians set every house ablaze with flamethrowers, if they even suspected it had Germans in it, destroying civilians houses. She always told me, how much respect she had for the Polish forces, she always called them real fighters, and very daring and brave. Both her and her parents houses were 2 times ransacked. First by retreating French troops, and during operation Switchback by the Canadians. Now, i am not saying the French and Canadians sucked, but it had always upset her.

Mark, just as a note, Austrian post-war conduct is very ambivalent (for lack of a better word). Very focused on making history forget about Austria as one of the 2 core Nazi countries. Because of this focus, war criminals have been treated very lightly in Austria. I remember going on a University trip to Vienna as a Pharmacy student, and noticing some celebrated members of the Austrian pharmaceutical community having been part of T4

Solid analysis Dr. Felton. Best history channel concerning these subjects on the web. Thank you. Where are teachers like you in high schools to inspire young people to dig into the murkier and darker aspects of recent history without political correctness or an acceptable narrative?

I'm a huge fan! Keep up the good work! Just one correction on the pronunciation of the place of the mass shootings near Riga. It is called “Rumbula” forest. In Latvian you mostly write as you speak, so the second “u” is pronounced just as the first one. And emphasis on the first “u”.

A superb audio, Mark. FWIW there is another “Rat Line” and it exists at The Virginia Military Institute (VMI), Lexington, Va. Freshman at VMI are called Rats who are the Rat Line at VMI. They often refer to one another as “Brother Rats”. It was also a Ronald Reagan film of the same name, “Brother Rat”. Where the Rat Line walks can be noted on the stone staristeps in Barracks. The stone steps there are worn deeper along the right side of the steps. Thank you for this audio and the others in this series. Excellent work and very well presented.

The prominent role of the Roman Catholic church in this is fascinating, especially since there were also very public calls from Roman Catholic bishops to shut down the T4 execution program and to excommunicate catholics who joined the Nazi party. This demonstrates just how complex history can be.
