Rat Bike Commuter Build - Vintage Ken Evans

Спорт

Rebuilt this sweet old Ken Evans Columbus Frameset into a rat styled commuter. Kept the paint original as the graphics/decals were too rad to remove.

Just discovered your channel, I've been a bicycle mechanic for 40 years. This is like meditation for me, very relaxing! Best of all, I couldn't spot a single mistake, you even used the right tool to crimp the end caps, and the right number of crimps. The zig zag of the seat post and the handle bar stem did grate a bit, I would have used a ball hone to smooth out the tubes inside, but maybe not on a rat bike like this. I even liked the level of patination, just perfect.

I love cleaned up stock paint jobs. My daily rider is an early 70s motobecane touring fixie conversion and my favorite part about it is the original, slightly chipped paint. On top of not being worried about parking it outside a store, the old paint really tells great story

If it were mine I would try to remove the rust. You can wrap the rust spots with a paper towel soaked with vinegar, and then wrap the paper towel with Saran wrap to keep it from drying out. Leave it there for a few/several hours and the rust should come off (it might need a little help afterwards from something mild like car polish to make it look like shiny bare steel). I don't think that vinegar will affect the paint in that amount of time, but you could test it on an inconspicuous area first. Once all the rust was removed I'd wax the frame to prevent it from rusting again. That would make the frame look well-used yet well-maintained, instead of well-used and neglected.

@@waveywheelies It’s a bit of a strange one. It has an Oxford Cycles badge, and is mostly all green, but it has Speedwell stickers on it. However, under the green paint, and stickers, there is a metallic red and either white or gold stripes. So what I think has happened is it started off as an Oxford, 3 speed hub type bike and at some point someone has painted it and threw on new stickers, and converted it into a 10 speed. I’m leaving the frame exactly as it is, I’ll just give it a wash, and then I’ll go for 26” wheels, coaster brake, and run something like 2 or 2.5” slick on it. I got some near new gullwing bars and stem coming so I’ll spray the stem black and matte black on the bars so there’s no chrome to ruin the beater look. Should come up pretty cool.

This is a nice fitness bike, but my ideal commuter would have a longer stem for more upright riding.

This build is sick man, been loving the vids lately. I like where you commentate the build a bit more. Where are those bars from? Looking for something similar (unbranded polished wide risers) for a second hand build I'm refreshing!

Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback. I actually got these bars off an old mtb. Nitto usually have a good range or just search online✌️

At 17:47 you use a special wrench while adjusting rear brake. What’s that one called? Also, shout out from Canada. Your videos are awesome. You inspired me to do a single speed conversion build. Keep up the great work!!

Looks great man! I was just wondering, when you just have a 1x in the front chain ring, does it not matter that your chain might cross a lot? Since only have one chainring in the front

Thanks man! I always line up the front chainring with the middle of the cassette (looking directly from the back). Seems to work well for me, haven’t had any issues yet. Narrow wide chainrings can be good in these situations too to help prevent the chain popping off
