RasTa Time is Kathy Arlyn Sokol's personal journey with the King of Reggae Bob Marley, which has spanned over four decades. Her journey takes us from Kansas and Japan, where she first met and toured with him, to Miami, Jamaica and the Bahamas to learn more of his music's enduring power. The book was inspired by Kathy's in-depth interview with Marley in 1979 in Tokyo. It is perhaps the last still-unreleased conversation with the legend in the world. Subsequent interviews with his family and friends reveal how the King's philosophy has been translated into art & action. It is an essential primer for all those who love Bob Marley's music and spellbinding persona, and seek to understand more of his social vision and spiritual roots.

"Love is my religion" ....I'll never forget that this was the first thing I put on Facebook almost 20 years ago (though I now stay away from that toxic hell hole). What an amazing man, who really changed this society for the better... Now it's time we all come together and stand up for our rights!

Bob was a prophet. Lived for 36 years. Touched the whole world with his music and message. Regardless of religion or race. Just feeling good is enough for most people.

Problem is, it was little more than 'feeling good'. His morality and the messaging of his lyrics were childishly primitive and have no real applicability to the complex problems of the real world. It's all one big cult-of-personality. Nothing he contributed ACTUALLY helped. Things have gotten nothing but worse in all of these important social/political ways, and it's because society has been a bunch of naive children since the 1960's,...gobbling up vapid feel-good fluff from people like Marley or The Beatles (etc. etc. etc.). Wake up and grow up. The music was fine. The lyrics and messages were well-intended. But at this point is should be seen as pathetic and even a bit gross, to STILL be fawning over empty fluff.

@@c3bhm This is a bizarre comment. You don't seem to know much about his music at all. Were you expecting to find some kind of political thesis in his music? Music is expression, not a solution for society's problems. I'd hardly call it "childishly primitive." Most younger people today only know of his "feel good" music, which I would agree is fluff. But most of his music (post-ska) is not that feel good stuff. Most of his music was about struggle, anger, resentment, and disdain for institutions. There's also a spiritual element to much of his writing. His metaphor and symbolism is largely drawn from the Old Testament and might sound odd if you don't understand the biblical context.

His WHITE FATHER was also 30 years older than his teenage mother and left them both in poverty in Jamaica when Bob was a little boy. The cancer that killed Bob also comes from his WHITE side...since you wanted to bring up his ethnic background. Bob NEVER claimed his White father as his White father never claimed him. Talk to Ben Davidson Graham. Let go of your ego and put your brilliant mind together with Ben's and discover the reality of what is actually the truth about the past and what is likely to happen in our lifetime. Open-mindedness is a quality that is diminishing in the present human condition, and there is nothing wrong with having to admit that you didn't get all the information correct. We all make mistakes and the best people are those who learn from them. I would enjoy a collaboration between you both and maybe even a discussion on KZread to bring all the information from you both to the masses.
