World Rugby have announced possible law changes which gives an advantage to teams with weaker scrums. But, what if I told you Rassie Erasmus saw this coming all along!

Yeah well, it was about 40 minutes of nice running rugby and then 40 minutes of utter clusterfuck rugby between two exhausted sides. 😉 The Boks are a great team, no doubt, but it's stunningly arrogant to think that every law change in rugby is always about the Boks, rather than just making the game less of a snooze-fest while forwards take a few minutes breather every time there is a scrum called and they pretend to tie up boots, or clean mud out of studs etc rather than just getting on with it.

And the biggest problem is that the RWC was played in the wet, and they really don't know what's going to hit them in Oz in 2027! Yes, as a Free State supporter originally, totally agree with you about Rassie being a genius. He was as a player, he is as a coach, and also as an administrator. And thanks for the 'all shapes and sizes' comment. As I just said on Tim's Eggchaser, I had the privilege to coach (aka crowd control) both my sons at primary school in Westville and have always thought that it is by far and away the best winter sport for all genders no matter how big they are.

The reason SA could get away with a 7 / 1 split is because they have the depth to select utility players. Remember when Boks selected 4 scrumhalves to cover the wings and full back? Flanks in for locks, hookers that were flanks, wing playing at centre, fullback on the wing, fly half at fullback, Kwagga anywhere. By tweaking some laws it might create a knock on effect and they'll find they've unintentionally created another area of the game where a team may dominate. If they limit the number of subs then they will have to rethink the HIA or decide how many forewards and backs are allowed to be subbed otherwise be forced to have uncontested scrums which will inevitably benefit a team that can field utility players so either way it will just create more loopholes to be exploited and more laws that will have to be changed. The Caterpillar ruck too they want to get rid of to speed up the game but that's because refs don't enforce a 5 second use it rule, if they just called it quicker then that's that problem solved, instead it's sometimes 30 seconds before the ball gets out. Teams will however just adjust to new laws and they may actually backfire and create a new monster, from bomb squad to nuke squad, maybe 1 day it'll become the blitz squad.

All well and good but if scrums go, I go as a spectator. Also, I’m not sure Rassie did anything based on a precognition of law changes. Rather, the obvious next step for the Boks would be to finesse their attacking play while still keeping their forward/physical play as a foundation. Whichever way you slice it, minimising scrums will hurt SA.

Let's look at the facts. Scrums take around 1 minute to complete. Teams can deliberately influence scrums, especially near the end of a close game to the point where you have 5 setups in a row, taking around 5 minutes out of the game. How many times could the Springboks have scored in that 5 minutes to win the game? So the law is to let the game flow and prevent stop/start in a game.

@LloydRobert On a serious note. I think Razzor is going to have a difficult time replacing Retallic and Whitelock. Retallic and Lood De Jager is probably the two best defensive lineout jumpers in the world. Retallic allows Barrett to play the way he does. That being said, I like this Josh Lord kid. I have only seen him play once or twice, but he reminds me of Ian Jones. If he is close to Ian, he will be good enough. I think Razzor is praying that the new laws will make the scrums less of a factor. I still think it is not going to be easy for Razzor. The Crusaders are losing every game, and they usually produce most of the All Blacks. He is going to have to be smart to make them dominate. Ireland and France will be better by the next World Cup. The Springboks will hopefully also grow their game. There are some very exciting youngsters coming through our system at the moment. The last four days, I have been watching all the schoolboy rugby tournaments played over this holiday. There is some serious talent at all levels at the moment, and the biggest upshot is the number of non white boys starting to perform at the top schoolboy level. Who knows, we might one day be allowed to select teams based on merit and not a ridiculous qouta or Apartheid system.

I used to be an avid rugby supporter even played myself in senior school and club. I dont even watch it anymore, its not the same game, they may as well play gaining grounds, its not what it used to be. In the old days it was a great game, now to much rule to much interfearance from ref's and management.

If I were Rassie I would pick Marcoi Van Staden and Marcell Coetzee as props and then pre-engage everytime so that the opposition can't take another scrum. Then you'll have five loose forwards plus the hooker.

Sad that "world rugby" is prepared to change the rules of the game just to negate the threat of one team, also highly suspicious that they never felt a need to change any of the rules when NZ domimated year after year, just a sad group of biaised old men with obvious allegiance to certain teams in the world

You have to ask yourself; if you strap a birdcage on as a helmet, wrap yourself up with pillows for padding and protection...are you still playing rugby or is it now American football? Too many rules changes and you not playing the same sport anymore. Globally, there is an attack on masculinity and they are trying to soften men. The reason for this is controversial and many believe it to be so that men are less capable of fighting when the next war comes around. We have a simple decision to make. Do we allow them to soften us or not?

The reason South Africa won was not because the Springbok were dominant but because the All Blacks missed the conversion & penalty kick at goal to win the match, either or both would have won it. It was not what the Springboks did and why we lost the game, we failed to take our opportunities but we aim to make amends in 2024 in South Africa.

Rugby used to be a game for "all shapes and sizes".....Look at the how the poundage for each position has increased since at least 1995. Laws that allow for 8 subs encourage this as well as the Laws at the breakdown does NOT encourage first and fastest as tackled player not required to release ( can place) and not required to "roll away". INdeed, when tackled player's back is the off-side line, one can only "jackal" and the jackal can be shoulder charged off the ball (which should have been released and thus no jackal needed) in a manner NOT legal if he were the ball carrier. I played rugby in US and UK for 19 years...later coached and refereed. This is no longer that once "beautiful game"

This is gonna become a 7s/league hybrid, would result in the elimination of props, hookers and your less mobile locks. If anything, make the lineout maul illegal, that's damn boring and blatant obstruction imho. Rassie too smart and innovative to let this even be an issue
