How to plant raspberries. How to prune and when. How to feed and when. Summer and Fall (Autumn) varieties explained. Why they are in raised garden beds. A raspberry guide for beginners with hand drawn pictures to help explain.
Ever bearing and single bearing raspberries explained.
I show you my 3 raised garden beds of raspberry plants, where I grow ever bearing and single bearing raspberries. Summer, Fall and Autumn varieties.
I show you how and when to prune your raspberry plants.
Raspberry plants can be bought as a small plant or a bare rooted cane and plant those into a slight mound so excess water does not sit around the roots for too long.

This is the best raspberry video I've watched. Explained in simple terms with diagrams for everyone to see exactly what to do. Full credit to you for keeping it simple and including your pictures so even beginner raspberry growers can easily see what to do. I've been gardening my whole life but never grown raspberries and wanted to try but all the videos make it harder than it needs to be. Yours is perfect. Thank you.

@@MyAussieGardenKitchen I have the confidence now to grow them thanks to your video. I was confused as to prunimg the different varieties but your simple explanation has resolved that for me. I went to Bunnings and bought a couple of chilcotin and have some golden ones I bought from diggers then last night saw Daley's had tulameen on sale so ordered a pack of those too. Not sure how thorny the golden ones will be but the others Daley's says have less than some other varieties. Some varieties I've seen in Bunnings look terribly thorny. How do you find the thorns? Are some varieties harder to pick with more thorns? I found a Chester blackberry alive under my fruit trees recently but to get it out I had to prune all the canes. I'm assuming seeing I did that I've cut off next year's fruiting ones and will have to wait a year or two for more berries?

G'day! Oh I hope that helps! It makes such a huge difference here and shade cloth was the best move I did with my raspberries. I hope to get a video together in the near future to show how shade cloth gives me an abundance of plump blackberries, were as the plant left to full sun, had every single fruit dry up and die off. Good luck and enjoy the Bunnings trip. I don't leave my house as I have PTSD and Agoraphobia now, but Bunnings was like Disneyland to me. 😂 My wife refused to go with me after a while as I took so long. 😁 All the best. Daz.

Very educational video Daz. Thanks for this. I liked the paper drawings.

It's funny with my chickens as they are so used to eating them as a treat, that they come running over every single time I go and do anything at those beds now. G'day Gerowyn. Sorry for the sow reply. I have not been well and have fallen behind badly on some things. I think they may set roots from bending the tips down into the dirt, but I have not tried it personally. I have had success in using cuttings from the thick, brown canes dipped in rooting hormone. That was a really, really long time ago and I think I may have buried at least one bud too back then. This is years ago now. Since then, I have just dug up the babies that pop up from the roots and move them to new pots or beds. Take care. Daz.

G'day Cynthia. Blueberries are different and a bit fussy with their soil and do benefit from a prune, but no more than 30% at a time. Strawberries, send out runners, so you can take them and create new plants once they establish. No real pruning. Just cutting the thin connection between the runner and the mother plant. Blackberries can be treated similar to the Summer bearing Raspberries, as they grow canes this year and fruit on them next year. You then cut away those after they have fruited and leave the new ones that have popped up for next year. I hope all that makes sense. Take care my friend and best wishes to you all. Daz.

G'day there. I am so sorry for the slow reply, but have been away most of the day for medical appointments. Do you mind me asking your basic geographic location? I am assuming you are in Fall/Autumn, just going by your question. If I understood you correctly, I would personally cut everything down to ground level a month into Winter on an ever bearing plant. This is just so I get all new growth with similar height and ripening times in that spot. I don't think it would be the end of the World if you did leave the babies growing, but I would imagine that as they get bigger, that are going to take away nutrients and water from the main ones that will be trying to grow after you do your cut back of the main everbearing patch. I hope that makes sense and thanks very much for getting in touch. Please feel free to do so at any time. All he best, Daz.

G'day. I have only seen this now and I am so sorry for the very late reply. I'm in Northern Victoria. Just minutes from the Murray River (border). Typically very hot, dry Summers and very solid frosts through the colder times. Wow, you live in a wonderful part of the country. Some amazing places to visit up there. All the best, Daz.

G'day. I have found that hanging strips of aluminum foil has distracted birds and rodents and possums have not touched mine really, but I did dust chili powder on the mulch and leaves once when something started eating them at night and that stopped straight away. Good luck with your raspberries and I hope you get to enjoy them more that the wildlife. All the best. Daz.

gday mate great video. I have a grown a raspberry plant that was in a large plastic pot in full sun and its now been three years and it has not grown one berry and I'm quite disappointed. Just wondering what I have been doing wrong. Before this season started I pruned all the dead stalks (I had not done it last seasons). I put blood on bone on it and kept the water up to it but still has not produced one berry. Any extra tips? Cheers mate

G'day mate. Sorry to read this and I can understand you being frustrated. Is there any chance that you know what variety it is? That is the first thing that can tell us which season it is expected to flower and fruit and if it should give fruit on the first or second year cane. In the mean time... They should be flowering now and giving fruit if it's a Summer bearing plant, otherwise, it will continue to grow new growth and will flower and fruit in Autumn. Feeding and watering is important and you are doing that. If you like, there are actual berry fertilisers on the market to give the plant the right nutritional needs. I usually just use home made brews and things like organic seaweed and fish tonics if I see them cheap. Mulching the top to retain moisture is a good idea and I assume the pot drains well. You want to keep water up to the plant, but never, ever have the roots in a soggy bog as they can rot easily. I have found that mine fruit better and give good sized fruit when the soil is kept moist, but still drains (I use raised beds for this reason). I hope this is not confusing you. I'm just trying to cover a few things here. Is it too big for the pot now? It might be root bound and stressed from the roots not having space to grow and produce new baby canes that eventually bear fruit. Is it doing OK in the sun and the leaves are not burning off? I had to shade mine when I moved to a hotter part of Victoria. Made the world of difference up here. I hope there is something in this that can help you. Please feel free to get back to me with any more info and hopefully we can work this out and you can enjoy your very own home grown raspberries. Good luck, Daz.

@@MyAussieGardenKitchen thanks for getting back to me Daz. Nah unfortunately I don’t know the variety of raspberry it is. I will give the berry fertilizer a go I didnt even know they existed haha. Water seems to drain well because I see water coming out the bottom of the pot. As to the mulch the growth has covered the hole pot so I can’t even get something down to the soil so you have a good point that the plant might be too big for the pot now because there is decent growth it is almost waist height. I may have to do a similar set up to you. Cheers mate

If I plant the everbearing and I prune it to the ground will it still have a summer AND fall crop?

  • @MyAussieGardenKitchen

G'day. If you prune the Everbearing variety to the ground in late Winter/early Spring, this will give you the main crop in Fall. After that fruit has been picked, you can prune the tops off all the canes, leaving the section with leaves and that should give a smaller crop in Summer. A lot of people will not do this as it is not worth the effort. Some people such as myself will grow a summer variety as well and not too close to limit diseases affecting all plants if something should occur. I hope this helps and all the best of luck! Daz.

Do you have issues with fruit fly's ? if so what do you use?

G'day Colleen. I use an organic liquid by the Cera Trap company and I have that in one commercial trap and a bunch of home made ones. The liquid attracts male and female fruit fly. I also use exclusion bags over my fruit. If you look at my recent video about my orchard and fruit trees, there is a section in that video about the fruit fly and what I do. Good luck and I hope you can keep control of them. All the best, Daz.

G'day. I have seen this here with one of my plants and it eventually have me raspberries. I'm not sure if it is the exact same as yours, but I assume the plant was dying and its need for survival, sent out new growth. I hope that made sense. Sorry for the delayed reply. I recently fell and hurt my hand and and I am now just catching up on comments. All the best. Daz.
