This song was popular well before cars. The original version was on the radio all the time when it came out. The Rascal Flatts cover of it for Cars just repopulsrized it to a new generation. But it's not their original song.

I think it sounds better half a step down! Gives it more energy and more of a rock edge to it. Seen them seven times and this song always gets everyone off their feet and the guitars are insane

​@shae482 agreed. The original in F sounds a little too bright and whiny for my tastes. This version in E is so much better, it's high enough that it still shows off his impressive vocals, but low enough that it has that rock edge and signature country twang.

Good residuals for Tom Cochrane who wrote and recorded this song in 1991. Some A-list country acts are good at finding good old top-40 songs that need to be heard again. Luke Combs just had a hit with "Fast Car". A great Tracy Chapman song from 1988. Brook& Dunn did the same with "My Maria" 1973 B W Stevenson/ Daniel Moore.
